Manage Energy not time..(comments on the article)

firstly i thanked god coz this read was required, my energy management was increasingly becoming inefficient. My crests and troughs were becoming and result my drain outs have become more frequent. In terms of my life i am at a present at a critical point of inflection and I need a good personal energy management to say the least, as my aspiration is increasingly towards building a social entrepreneurial model for which I need to devote optimal time and energy in my present business model and my aspired business model. My shortcomings are more towards physical agility. My "SuryaNamaskars and Pranayam" have gone for a toss for quite some time now and has to be revived at any cost. Besides getting 7hr sleep is ultra essential !. The most important change that i got after the read also has been to find a direct correlation b.w. my energy efficiency and my strategic goals. after all i am a strategist !

  1. To introduce myself, I am Shreyas from TAPMI.

This is an article put across in a very nice way! Before answering the questions, I had a disagreement with one section of the article which spoke about the focus of the mind required. I personally have felt and experienced it as well! At times its really important for you to attend a call or any other communication. It might not always be in your perspective, but w.r.t the others who are linked with you, it will be very important. So I personally feel one needs to draw a line there to prioritize things. This is my personal view point though. Comments are always welcome :). If am perceiving it in a wrong way, please do correct me!

    Okay... coming to the questions...
    1. Right now, in terms of life, I am at an experimental stage where I am wanting to make use of a few opportunities here n there n see how its workable for me. Since am still single and not ready to mingle, I have quite a lot of time to experiment a few things in the market apart from my normal job.
    2. In a short term perspective, I will surely want to convert any one of the ideas/plans I have. In a long term perspective, w.r.t career, I wish to be seen among the top guys whom not only the business world but also the society looks upon.
    3. My short comings w.r.t energy management are my timings at office which keep changing week to week due to the kind of job I have. So my routine gets affected a bit. I also have a bit of a laid back attitude when it comes to exercising as I hardly get some sleep (Steve warner's case). Due to this, I get drained out and frustrated pretty frequently.
    4. Regarding how I am planning to overcome it... I was planning to switch my transport means to a cycle instead of a bike since almost 3 weeks now. I guess after reading this article, I will give it a serious thought as it hardly takes me an hour more fr transportation and i after all am buying this time for my own good! Moreover I need a lot of cardio vascular exercises as well. Apart from that, I need to increase the frequency of my Pranayama (I have reduced the frequency after joining the course :)...).

These were a few observations and comments from my side. Thanks a lot to Nagendra for making me realize a few things... Not only through the article, but through the interactions in the class as well.

  3. Hi I m Huzefa, from batch 15 Tapmi

On the outset i would like to thank Prof. S. Nagendra to spark on thinking the way we are managing our selves. This article acts as trigger which was very much needed to bring about a change our lifestyle where needed. Though while i m writing this review im already losing on an 7 -8 hour of good sleep. ( which i have set as a 1st ritual to follow). However i could not resist jotting down my thoughts on this article at this point of time ( Its 3o mins past 1 in the morning).
It releates so much to the way i m working these days, striving to manage time and meeting pressing deadlines, a feeling that there is so much less time and so much work to complete ( Though thats not really true, as there is so much time that is spent not utilized). Sometimes losing on quality family life and time to spend with friends, as i end up being tied up with work even at home and on weekends.( working on a few tasks which i may have put to later at some point in time earlier).
So here i started first with accepting Yes! I need to manage my energy and currently its lacking.Secondly believing that these rituals will definately work. Futher to which making some initial plans to follow rituals on physical health (A good sleep,Waking up early, better eating habits and some exercise to begin with). Controlling my emotions in a better way and constantly observing changes and improving futher where needed.
Everyone of us have the capability and the energy to outdo ourselves and others and set higher benchmarks and once those benchmarks are met go ahead and set a higher benchmarks from the previous ones. However many of us really do that? This article instills some thoughts in us. And i m all set to change the way i live today and bring out the best in me.

  4. Hello, I am Arun working for a BPO and from Tapmi batch 15.

Well when I started to read this article the first thing it read about early to bed and waking up with the Sun. Thanks to the new BPO culture, I being in India, my Sun raises in UK......In a away I was puzzled it does not apply to me. But further reading made me to think it’s not a mandatory requirement it’s a ritual to go in to bed and wake up on a specific time each day. Regularise everything being done....
With a puzzled start it was a bit surprising for me after reading the article further. Knowingly or unknowingly I had some of the rituals mentioned but were not followed as a regular one. Now with this thought in mind when I look back at them it makes a lot of sense. Though the rituals I had was a crude one with this thought they would be more refined now onwards.
    1. In terms where I am now in life......Trying to gain as much experience as I need to accomplish my dream. In a way experimenting normal life in an abnormal timing. Not so open giving the positive feed backs...:), struggling to grow in the corporate world with my personal principles coming in between...
    2. W hat you want to become? – Well thoughts are hundred but the aim is to have the leadership quality like Mahabharata’s Krishna with an undying spirit of Duryodhana. Be a leader to change with the sustainable growth either in corporate or be it in Political world. People should be able to differentiate me with others.
    3. Shortcomings in energy management –Not a giver of positive feed backs – this has made me a good employee but cannot transfer what he learnt to others and manage people. Housing laziness within me - not religious enough in the rituals or the approach adopted. Getting carried away with the things coming in the way though.
    4. To overcome these – will follow, whatever I do I will do it with a will in it, will not be doing it for the heck of it. Start giving positive feedbacks starting with my flower guy...then gradually building it enough to share with colleagues. Concentrate one work at a time..to start with do not have chat on when I am checking Gmail until I am finished with my primary stuff of checking mails.

This article has made my thought process to go in a more rational way. I thank Nagendra for sharing this article with us. It reminded me of importance of reading more.

  5. I am Ranjit from TAPMI
My first feeling after reading the article was as if one of my key problem is resolved – so much to do, but cannot have more than 24 hours in a day. But this article tells how more can be done in those given 24 hours by managing energy, which can be unlimited.
    To answer the questions -
    1. Where am I now ? It would have been easier for me to answer this question had it been known to me where I want to be. I know how much I have come in my life but I don’t know where I want to be – honestly speaking.
    2. What I want to become ? I don’t have an answer to this. It’s not that I never thought about it , I have been thinking about it at least since my graduation days ( more than 15 years back !). Once I thought I have clear idea what I want to become – I wrote in my diary many years ago – I wanted to create a personal identity of mine which is different from my professional identity. I thought my professional identity is to earn money and to survive. As professional I might be doing things that I may not enjoy doing. To create my personal identity I will be doing something that I like doing and that is beneficial for others ( kind of some service to the society in some form). But , over the time , that thought has become history and now my work, and little what I can do to my family is reality. Being honest ,at this moment , I cannot answer this question – something which I could not do in past so many years , I don’t think I can decide in 2-3 days. This needs more thinking and probably more energy ( if not time !). Probably I can tell what I want to be in career, but I don’t know where I want to be in my life.
    3. Current Level of Energy Management - I feel now I am at very High level of Energy – I have been able to manage it significantly ( though I never thought I am managing energy ). My day starts at around 5:30 AM in the morning with one hour of tennis till 7:00 AM, reaching office before 9:00 AM , about 13 hrs at office ( doing this for last 2 months, earlier it used to be 11-12 hrs), back at home at 10:30 PM, dinner and than 1-2 hrs study for TAPMI, less than 6 hrs of sleep. I am able to sustain this kind of lifestyle mainly due the positive feeling that I have towards what I am doing and the support I get from my family ( that boost my energy). I am not complacent about it and I need to improve more because there are many other things that I want to do and I am not able to do. So need to generate more energy on me.
    4. After reading the article , I have found few important points to improve my personal efficiency at work place – 1. Take up one work at a stretch and complete avoiding any disturbance. 2. It is OK to take few breaks during the work , it will improve my efficiency. I can start practicing it. 3. A possible energy drainer for me is getting stressed, impatient and angry occasionally and thinking about those negatives more than required. I can learn to look at some of those things positively and avoid outflow of energy.

  6. Hello, I'm Priyanka from Kirloskars (KIAMS)

I wanted to post my views on what Shreyas wrote regarding the focus of the mind.

As far as my understanding goes, the article speaks about the focus of the mind/energy w.r.t multitasking. The author suggests ultradian sprints of 90-120 mins on one particular activity rather than trying to accomplish many tasks at once.I do agree that we need to take a call for tasks of utmost priority which might require us to disrupt our current activity. At workplace, if you are writing a piece of code or seriously doing some documentation, you cannot afford to help your colleague with his programming logic or attend a personal phone call. This will not only disturb the flow of thoughts for your work, it will also perturb your concentration/energy levels when you resume the work. Adding to this, the total time taken to complete the activity increases!!

Now suggested solutions from my side:
1.Since we know the pattern of peak/non-peak hours at work/b-school, we can build rituals to do some tasks at a particular time when the chances of external disturbances are low. I'm talking about the tasks which require our complete concentration of 1-2 hours and where we would not like to be disturbed.
2.Always watch your mind since it keeps jumping from one branch(thought) to another like a monkey.

  7. Hi,
My name is Ajay, I'm from TAPMI, I work for Motorola.
This is one of the kind of article I read often, thanks to my friends for sending such articles often.
Solutions mentioned in this article for problems are very simply and can applied easily. But I don't to a point metioned in article regarding MULTI-TASKING. In my opinion there will be no loss in productivity or the quality of the output with multi-tasking. I feel if we train our brain for multi-tasking, we will get same productivity and quality as we get with concentrating on single task till the completion (logical end).
    1. I guess I'm at the end of exploring phase and entering focusing phase of my life. Still exploring is in progress...
    2. what I want to become...umm...still exploring [from one of the strategist I learnt not disclose all key strategies in public domain...:-)]
    3. Shortcomings in energy management: Managing with 5-6 hrs of sleep, not able to make enough time for family and friends
    4. Don't know about how will I make 7-8 hrs sleep, but definitely will not bring home any office work.

Before closing I would like to share my opinion (personal...comments are always welcome)... I feel even we Indians should sacrifice few of the things to build developed nation as they (US) did for their country, since they are successful they are thinking about all this lifestyle programs and surveys...no one bothered about these things when they were working very hard to build their country and their US lifestyle...

  8. Hi,this is Priyanka again from KIAMS posting my views on the article and answers to Nagendra sir's questions.

I'm thankful to Sir for sharing this article at the right time when I've been reflecting of late about my failure in energy management. The article has very nicely brought out the core problem with working for longer hours as time and energy.Time is anyway a finite resource. Energy which has been the focus of attention comes from four main wellsprings in human beings: the body, emotions, mind, and spirit. How our energy can be expanded and renewed in each of these aspects has been very well articulated.

One needs to control one's emotions. Positive emotions always fill us with positive energy and make us more willing to work. In contrast to this, the negative emotions(the fight/flight mode) which rise due to unexpected challenges/demands make us more irritable, angry, impatient, tensed etc.I've personally experienced this so many times which saps my energy and disturbs my thought process. Even during exams in the 1st term, I went completely blank in the exam hall for 1 or 2 papers. I will try the deep abdominal breathing technique suggested by the author.I also like the 3 lenses concept especially the wide lens where people ask themselves, “Regardless of the outcome of this issue, how can I grow and learn from it?”

And then there's the Human Spirit: Energy of Meaning and Purpose. If I can see some meaning in what I'm doing and have a purpose behind it, I'm definetely going to enjoy it with a lot of positive energy.

Finally I like the what the energy project envisions.A new and explicit contract that beneļ¬ts all parties: Organizations invest in their people across all dimensions of their lives to help them build and sustain their value. Individuals respond by bringing all their multidimensional energy wholeheartedly to work every day. Both grow in value as a result.

    Now,my answers:

    1. I'm in the middle of the path I've chosen to achieve my dreams and aspirations.I realise I've a long way to go.Life's not been a bed of roses in the path I've chosen. But hoping for the best.

    2. I want to see myself in those top positions of the ladder of hierarchy in an organisation. I also want to be more equipped in terms of societal awareness.I don't want to become just a manager but a successful manager

    3. My shortcomings in energy management : Physical agility which is a must for the kind of profession I've opted for.It covers everything like imbalanced sleeping hours daily, not very balanced diet always, lack of regular exercise..And imbalanced distribution of energy to various activities

    4. How will I overcome them - Develop rituals for the important activities and make them happen; use ultradian periods for various tasks; practice pranayama daily and resume yoga daily; and have a watch on my food.

  9. Thanks for the response Ms.Priyanka. I agree with you to some extent but the first part of Ajay's comment was actually my response to it. I seriously feel it's the need of the hour to mend your mind for multi-tasking. I have experienced this at work many times. I have felt this to be really important. Hence you might have to cut short a few things/leave a few things for others to take it over even though you might be primarily responsible for it. Guess we can take this discussion off line :)... u can mail me at shrey.janivar@gmail.com

  10. Hi...I am Adarsh Halwe, TAPMI Batch 15.

Thanks to Ajay, Arun, Shreyas, Huzefa, Ranjit Sir and Priyanka…for motivating me to write at this point of the day/night...however could not resist getting into the discussion.

Manage Your Energy and Not Time...was indeed an eye opener. I was able to correlate to Gary Faro, Wachovia Bank and to make matters easy for myself...I thought of skipping the first few pages and actually test myself on the Energy Crisis statements...the result was significant energy management deficits and down in three of the four categories…the last category was also not that good as I still had one check :(

The way things move these days for me…maybe us….it is really difficult to manage time however managing energy could be a pretty good alternate. Though I agree with what has been said especially with the likes for the requirements of physical energy, focus during multitasking and seeing the world through different lenses as key requisites. However, am not sure if we can pass on our responsibilities just because we don’t love doing that...as in the case of one of the Senior Leaders. Also what do we do if our Boss sends a mail and we are doing something which is really urgent…ignore or attend? Not that I disagree with Ajay..but have been terribly unsuccessful in doing that.

Speaking of my current state I work starting 9 and end by XX, depending on business requirements. Sleep is generally regular however is cut short in case of any business deliverables and studies. Physical activity has been nil in spite of me taking tips from Ranjit Sir about the various health alternatives close to my place (thanks to him)...in terms of Prof...currently am one of those who is welcomed by the Sun instead of me doing that (need to improve on it). However, in terms where I am professionally ...I am where I want to be: have become confident of what am doing and want to stick around with my current profession which requires business analysis and market research.

Not sure what I want to be...maybe somewhere in the management team (strategizing) or start something on my own; but am 100% sure where I want to be...My farm house, sipping my morning tea in the garden...not sure how realistic however am a firm believer in the power of dreams :)..Also want to work for social organization someday...as a start was part of a flag hoisting ceremony for a school, run by an NGO, which provides free education to the poor in the area…gives oneself a good sense of belonging I should say.

Energy management score was in red due to which I generally becoming very demanding and impatient with my colleagues. I have the spirit to go on with work however have not been a very good Mentor...not able to translate my thoughts into words for them.
Overcoming the above shortcomings has been a challenge for me. But plan to spread more positiveness around me...how...usage of simple appreciation words...such as Thank U to one and all :) and starting to do physical activity more often with better diets. In the long term would like to read and learn Sanskrit...not that am influenced by the Prof...but surprised why people dont take this instead opt for other foreign languages for doing their research...may be this could also help me develop positive thoughts.

Seeing the time now..guess have started on a wrong note however appointments are to be kept...don’t want to miss Sun starting tomorrow...so bye for now :)

  11. This is Nitin Nag. I work (I presume..) at a company called MphasiS. Next month I complete 10 years here.

    Here I am...
Since I started working 11 1/2 years ago, I have done different roles in my job. It has been a phenomenal learning. It all started after my graduation at RVCE and along the way while working, I finished my post grad. My job took me to different places and gave me the opportunity to work with different people. My value system ensured I came back to where I belong and hence I have settled down in Bangalore where I grew up since birth (aeons ago...). Currently I am juggling between a job that is slightly demanding since I have taken up a new role and my phd that I am pursuing as it might help me get closer towards my life ambition. To say straddling these two lanes along with managing demands of personal life is tough would be an understatement. To summarize happy with the way things are, excited about things I am doing and expectantly looking forward to many more wonderful things I shall be part of.

I wanna be....! (looking ahead 5 years hence)
Rescind from "corporate" job. Take up teaching after finishing my phd (hopefully). Perhaps do some consulting on my own imparting knowledge I have acquired (or so I would like to believe..!) over the years. During my schooling I wanted to study history and be a history teacher. My parents intervention led me down a different path. Absolutely no regrets on this one though. Deep inside, I do cherish getting back to where I wanted to be. Will never stop in pursuit of it. This has got me thinking and hence writing a list of that I wish to accomplish in next 5 years..
    1. learn guitar
    2. help my wife setup a library and be one of the people to read books there regularly to people visiting
    3. should have done snorkeling and scuba diving
    4. finish reading every single piece of literature on Indian history
    5. traveled to all states in india (have 50% coverage right now)

    Short comings...
Never realized or even heard of this concept of energy management. This has got me thinking about it now. If I were to map my current state to the article, my score is alarming.
Factors influencing that is perhaps inability to maintain a steady state of mind away from emotions caused by a situation. One factor that I am troubled with is reacting emotionally to anything around especially more to things having a direct impact on me. One perhaps need to be able to disengage from emotions and focus on outcomes.

    How will I surmount...?
I guess there is no easy way out of this. I dont see a "emotion handling for dummies" kind of literature around. So I do believe this is easier said than done. However, indulging in things that are more soothing for the soul perhaps is one way I see. This would range from gardening, cycling, swimming, reading to cooking at home in my case. Months since I did any of them other than reading. Guess I need to ensure atleast two of them are done each week to start with till I inernalize this as part of the routine.

  12. Hi, I am Sudheer.R.M form TAPMI, work for Sartorius

    1. PRESENT RATING

Based on my present practice, I can rate myself in a scale of 10 as following.

    Body: 4
    Emotions: 6
    Mind: 4
    Sprit: 5

    2. TARGET

Target for one year: In a short term, I need to jump 2 points in all four wellsprings.

    3. LEARNING FROM ARTICLE

Shifting from Executive level to Manager level, I was very anxious and doing things rapidly and unsystematically. My aim was to achieve my set goals only goals no matter in whatever the process I use.

Really the MBA and the articles like this really opening my mind to have better control over the process than on time. Being working in MNCs at a manager level really we feel very much tight in our daily routines and the way we are managing the same making us still worse.
My energy level by week end becoming exhausted and concentrating on studies becoming very difficult, I need to pick key points from the article and work towards the same to be energetic and to feel “I have more time to do work”

    4. WAY TO ACHIEVE

Shifting from my present to the target what I set above is really difficult task untill I make that as regular practice. Hence I opted for year wise targets and review on the same.
I break four factors above into specific intervals and work on the same. Concentrating all at single time becomes difficult as it already explained well under “Mind” portion in the article.
After analyzing the progress of set period (1 year), I will review and accordingly plan for the future course.

thanks a lot Professor! really an eye opener...the article helped me to see things in a different perspective. the routine mundane activities seem more interesting now!

i have a point to add, which i feel is necessary in a work environment. the author stresses on managing energies at work space - i feel it is also worthy to have a "friend" at work place. instead of just having colleagues, if we form friendship bonds, i believe work place no longer seems a place where we work/earn/slog - it becomes more of a playground!

    the questions -

    1. tell me where you are now (in terms of life) - in a stage of life where i have an urge to carve a niche, pave a way towards realising my dreams.

    2. tell what you want to become - have to realise my dreams, be a better person than what i am today - professionally & personally.

    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management - i go through a lot of crests & troughs on a given day. need to even out them by being more emotionally stable - helps me see things and act on it in a more rational/practical way.

4.how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article - the article stresses on having a "3 lenses approach". that should help me in viewing situations sans emotions.

  16. My name is Rochelle. I'm an Analyst with Hewlett Packard and currently pursuing my E-PGDM at TAPMI

The article 'Manage your Energy, Not your Time' was insightful and forced one to introspect on the quality of our daily routine. An interesting thought that crossed my mind while reflecting on the article, was that I spent a significant portion of my work-day questioning the quality and purpose of financial data, but spent hardly any time applying the same technique to my life. The hallmark of quality is that the minute you stop focusing on it, it tends to deteriorate at an accelerated pace!

Some things I liked immensely in the article:
    - The part about 'telling the story'. It is something I personally relate to because I have used it many times, to tackle problems that seem a mountain, but are really a molehill. Nothing helps like telling oneself the story from different perspectives. Especially for those people who dearly love a story (One of the things I hated about growing up was loosing out on my grand mom’s story time).
    - Building stamina and energy from a fitness routine is essential, not just from a fitness angle, but more as an opportunity to let the child in each of us have some playtime. On my walks I see a lot of people exercising, but very few seem to be enjoying themselves. Most of them have their earphones jammed in and are stuck in their own world. It’s such a pity because the early mornings are a lovely time to welcome the day with laughter and camaraderie

    Now for my answers:

Right now I'm at a point in my life where I feel like I'm standing at the horizon and there is a sea of opportunity to be explored. I've been working professionally for awhile now and have come a long way from being a timid, shy girl who couldn't frame a sentence worth listening to. Professional challenges along with the international exposure that come with our jobs has helped to firm up my outlook and given me the necessary confidence to plan for a future ahead on my own terms.

My ambition from my teenage years has been to write a novel, something on the lines of P.G Wodehouse, but nothing that I write is remotely funny. I guess, I just haven't got to the part in my life where I can see the humor in everything. So for now I want to start a business, spend some time developing it, and then write a book on precisely why and how it was doomed to fail. If the venture succeeds, the novel will either become a short story or will get postponed for awhile.

From an energy point of view, I have a very restless nature so though I start things with high energy; it tends to dissipate as the project wears on. I also have very little patience when things go beyond schedule because in all probability I've already jumped into something new. This is an area I need to develop in terms of patience and also coaching people who can step in and own things to completion. My reading habit has also come under a lot of pressure lately as TAPMI coursework takes precedence. Reading fiction is the one activity that completely relaxes me and it’s an aspect of my life that I'd like to rejuvenate

In order to develop patience, stamina and also some strategy, I'd like to learn a game. Having never been athletic, it seems quite challenging, but I'm going to give it some serious thought. Suggestions are welcome...I've also decided to take a lesson out of this article and spend time in the library reading fiction at dedicated intervals during the month without any external disturbances.

Managing energy or time or relationships or business or anything else, really comes, I think from an awareness of all the factors that are involved in the equation. The best program or routine that one can build must come from our own awareness of the expectations and commitments of the situation. We must invest in contemplating and finding the best path forward as that would be the program unique to our needs. Articles such as these are the springboard to build one's own strategy for personal management. And for this opportunity at introspection and self-expression I'd like to thank sir

  17. Hi,
I am Soumya Saswat from KIAMS B-11.
I thank you sir for all your efforts for helping us to develop and grow for the current job market and at the same time teaching us ethics and moral science(implicitly taught).

Hello all @ TAPNI. We here at KIAMS do need a lot of help from you all. Most of us are young and have no corporate experience. This is a request to you all, if you go through good articles online or have some valuable inputs for us just get in touch with us and mail your ideas and advices @ kiamsb11@yahoogroups.com

    Coming down to questions....
    1. Where you are now (in terms of life)? : -
Well why all your questions are so tough..huh
I am in a phase of life where I can build myself for the future. This is the right time for me to recon the potential in me and grow them. This is the right time when I should know what exactly i want to do. This is a phase of my life which is similar to the story in the first half of the movie Lakshya.

    2. what you want to become? : -
This time I know this answer. Its I DONT KNOW.
I am still trying to explore what I want to become. This is the only thing that is bothering me day in and day out. I dont get patience till get an answer for what I really want to get. Hope I get the answer before its too late.

    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management? : -
    Body
❑ I don’t regularly get at least seven
to eight hours of sleep, and I often
    wake up feeling tired.
❑ I frequently skip breakfast, or
I settle for something that isn’t
    nutritious.
    ❑ I dont workout.
    Mind
❑ I have difficulty focusing on one
thing at a time, and I am easily distracted.
❑ I don’t take enough time for reflection,
    strategizing, and creative
    thinking.
    Emotions
❑ I frequently fi nd myself feeling
    irritable, impatient, or anxious at
    work, especially when work is
    demanding.
❑ I have too little time for the activities
    that I most deeply enjoy.
    ❑ I don’t stop frequently enough to
    express my appreciation to others
    or to savor my accomplishments
    and blessings.
    Spirit

    3. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article? : -
Firstly I ve decided to sleep by 12 or before and get up early(by 6:30am). I ve already made a personal goal chart and m trying to work according to that. I will try and put what I like to do in the chart itself. Frankly speaking we at KIAMS are not in that great deal of pressure. We here just need to prioritize the works that has to be done and have to have focus in whatever we do.

    Thank you sir..

Thanks a lot Professor for such a great article. All of us in todays worlds are running behind time to achieve are goals. We are not able to justify ourselves at work & at home. After reading this article which was very difficult with my kids running all over ,but managed to do so.

1.tell me where you are now in terms of life: This is very diificult to answer because you are never happy with what you are we want to achieve more in life, which is never ending.

2.tell what you want to become : a better mother for my kids .to professionly reach higher goals with the help of this MBA course.

3.what are your shortcomings in energy management:The article has really inspired me,it has been an eye opener. As with children, work shedule from 9am to 5pm,than back home managing the kids, husband, house, than lastly mba course .this article teaches me how to mange my self ,especially taking a break after every work ,relaxing, exercising.the troughs &crests of of my life are at maximum but after reading this article i feel i could organize my self in a better way.

4.how you willovercome them that you learnt from this article:the ultradian spirits:which refers to atemporary shift from one task to another ,it is efficient to focus fully for 90 to 120 mins take a break & fully focus on the next activity. One needs to control ones emotions, have a positve emotions which will fill us with positive energy.

  19. Dear all,
I am Rajesh Prabhu from TAPMI@batch15.
I am bit surprised about such an article in HBR.
I thought management reading is always about maximizing profit and minimizing costs/resources.
It's nice to see that contemporary management is focussing on human development too.

I feel what ever is meant in this article is not different than some of the spiritual articles say. Spirituality always focusses on individual and not externalities like time.

Years ago I had read a book called "7 habits of highly effective people. The HBR article looks more like an application of the concepts in the book.

I have been practicing 0.5 hours of brisk walking every morning since 2004. Believe me, This had freed me from lots of stress related dosorders like headaches, body aches etc besides reducing the bad cholesterol levels in my blood. I wished that I could do 1 hours of exercises instead of 0.5 hours every day, but It remained a challenge due to my busy schedule from 6:00 to 23:30. I have made a promise to myself that on saturdays and sundays I will increase the physical activites to 1 hour instead of 0.5 hour.

Any ammount of reading on "Emotional intelligence" - by Daniel goleman won't help unless I start to become my own emotions at the time of theire arising. This is what ZEN masters call the "Awarness". I have experinced if I can be aware and catch the arise of anger as it happens, I cannot get angry at all. All emotions rule over the intellect and heart of human being. We need to harness the power of awarness to manage emotions. There is nothing to control here.

The cocept the "Multitasking" introduced by management has destroyed the power of our mind. Einstein said humans use only only 10% of ability of brain. This is because the mind is not focussed. Unfocussed mind wastes lots of energy. Today I did an experiment. I have the habit of checking my e-mail in office every now and then and anwering them. Today I decided to see that mail only twice per day and concentrate on my regular activities. I could measure the result. I took less time to finish my job and it was satisfying. I vow to continue thus practice of focussing on one task at hand hence forth rather that claim to do multitasking where in time taken to complete the two jobs is more that sum of time taken to finish jobs while focussed.

I am always pricked by the question "What is the meaning of life"?. One German philosopher says humans are meaning making machines. Fore some making money may be meaning of life, while for some other serving humanity many the meaning of life. But I am deeply convinced that serving humanity as meaning of life holds highest respect and is the most secred and selfless meaning one can create for life. Here let me confess that even though I wanted to do some good to children of our country, there is no initiative from my side. Some years back I was associated with one association called "Odanadi" in Mysore. This oraganisation brings up destitute children of sex workers. I was involved through my company for some fund raising and computer donation programe. I feel it is time again to continue such activites. I promise that by March I will be active member of another philantropic organization.

  20. Hello. I am Bharti, a first year student at the Kirloskar Institute.
During my brief but interesting work-life my colleagues and I used to use phrases like "burnt-out" and " we-need-a-holiday" pretty regularly, and pretty loosely, but this article seems to put all the random thoughts that went through our collective minds in a really succinct form.
The article had quite a few revelations...never knew that "Energy management" could be applied to anything other than the depleting oil reserves, or that there was a science of stamina!
This article was like one of those check points which get us to reflect on things we all think we already "know" about, but rarely implement.
So , now to move on to where I think I am at this point in my life-
I think I have given myself a really incredible opportunity by deciding to take a break from work and study, and would hate to look back and feel that I wasted my two years here. So I am trying my best to leave this campus a better person.
But that's easier said than done.
I will not say that I am having "a full fledged energy management crisis" but I think, especially after having read his article , that there is a lot to improve.
Talking about what I want to be, I want to make a career in the field of events and PR, two things I have really loved doing and will love doing.
My shortcomings , as far as energy management goes- i think I have days on which I feel I can conquer the world and days on which I feel really mopey...peaks and valleys as the article would have it. Then I tend to twist events and happenings, in my head that is, to serve my own ends. Also, I tend to muddle up my priorities.
After reading this article, I think the best way to overcome these shortcomings would be to be self-reflexive. To set straight the stories I choose to tell myself, and to follow the old adgae of "early to bed and early to rise" , also I think I would start spending more time on trying to realise my long term career goal.
to sum up, a really interesting atricle that got me thinking on where my life is headed.
    Thanks Sir.

  21. Hi, I’m Mariza Pinto from TAPMI.

At the outset, I would like to say that the article was really interesting and definitely shed light on a few techniques that could help improve one’s energy levels.

As to where I am in life, well with regard to life, I cannot say with a great degree of certainty, but with regards to career – definitely dazed and confused after the recent sub-prime crisis, recession and market(s) free falling into chaos. I work in the financial industry and although we did get forewarnings a year ago – things really went chaotic a few months ago. A lot of institutions and companies that one felt were beacons in the field have shown-up to be quite the opposite.

With regard to the future I am now left wondering as to where the future will lie – a slow limp back to normalcy or is this just the beginning of a bleak future --anybody’s guess? What I would like to become in terms of my career is someone comfortable in a given career and not having to swim against the tide. And ultimately being able to create a good work-life balance - enjoying the small things in life is also important.

My shortcomings in energy management are that I personally think that I really spread my energy levels around trying to take on too many tasks or allowing myself to get interrupted too easily. Keeping good cheer is also important, because the gloom in the markets in enough to drain your energy out.

Some of the techniques in the article do make sense. The ultradian sprint for tasks is something I can start with. Taking short breaks and placing my inbox on hold should be good for a start. Trying to squeeze in a little more sleep would also be a good idea. I should also try to allocate more time for my family.

  22. Hi everyone...
To introduce myself I am Vibhuti Kapoor from KIAMS (B-11).

For me this article couldn't have come up at a more apt time than now, w.r.t the current situation I am going through. The problem of energy management, which I find to be at a constantly depleting level. It has really been an eye opener. Now I know, where was I going wrong and how to manage this chaos i have created in my life.

    Now the questions:

1.where am I in terms of life:
Right now am going through a very confusing and experimental stage. I came into MBA with a very clear mindset thinking I knew what I wanted out of my life, which prooved to be a misconception. As now, actually being able to see what it actually takes to achieve this, and how wide the scope is, has opened new facets to me; and I am exploring myself to find wherein my best interest lies.

    2.what I want to achieve:
As far as my professional life is concerned, this is exactly the reason of the chaos I am facing. I still am exploring myself to know what exactly i want to be. Personally, I want to be a person who is connected to her roots and always improove and develop as an individual.

    3.shortcomings:
My biggest shortcoming accounts for taking care of my body, in which I score 4/4...!!! And am already facing the consequences... Spirit too is is a disconcerting factor...

    4.how to overcome these:
I first need to adopt a focused approach, multi tasking is not my arena. Am going to give due attention to my body...so that it can keep me going and my spirits high...a healthy brain rests only in a healthy body...
I am going to make it a point to frame a schedule for myself, which not only takes care of my sleeping and eating needs but also to perform various other tasks....and I seriously need to work on my habit of procastination, which I even did to post a comment on this blog also....

  23. Hi All, I'm Ashok from KIAMS. When I started reading it, I found it interesting. As I continued reading, I found it refreshing from the usual serious stuff and heavy article readings we do being students of MBA and all. By the end, I found in it a valuable learning.

    Coming to your questions sir,
    1)
I know I'm on the right path to reach my goal, but I'm still confused whether this is the best path. Sometimes I do feel the path I'm walking in is difficult and is not what I thought it would be, and I feel that I can achieve things without doing an MBA. But at times I do recognize the learning, which otherwise would have taken a long time. I know my shortcomings to be successful and I'm on way to overcoming them.

    2)
@Family, I would like to become the person whom they love most, whom they care for and respect.
@Friends, I would like to become the person whom they like to hang out with and trust me.
@Work, I would like to become the person whom people look up to, and say to their colleagues, "Now that's a man who does his work right & perfect, and who is best at doing it".
@Life, I would like to be successful - Which means that I should be happy with what I'm doing and I should be able to find a meaning in my living.

Well, that's philosophically speaking. I do have material goals, but I guess I don't want to disclose them here.

    3)
*Missing Breakfast a lot, Something I've realized long back but didn't do anything about it. This reading gave me a strong desire to do something for it.
*Work out, Have to learn swimming and resume yoga.
*Too little time for activities I enjoy.
*Reacting to immediate crises and demands instead of focusing on longer term value adding things
*Do not take enough time for reflection
*Not investing enough time and energy in making a positive difference to others or to the world

    4)
The concept of three lenses is simple to read, But I do think it's powerful enough to solve most of the shortcomings.

Clear division of energy centres will help me identify where my energy's getting wasted. I can now clearly focus on improving where I need to, Physical or Emotional or Mind or the Spirit.

The rituals are just like the 21-Day exercise I've read about in "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari". This reading gave me time to rethink about them and pushed me to make things which I want to do as rituals and inculcate them into my life.

  25. Hi, I am Vikas Guru from KIAMS.

I would like to thanks Nagendra sir for sending us such a beautiful article, first thing that I liked in this article is sharp focus, by this I do not mean focus on Managing Energy but I actually mean focus on ‘How’ rather than ‘What’. Actually most of the literature of this kind only focuses about ‘what to do?’ but far from pointing ‘How to do?’ this article beautifully covered the practical aspects and their implementations.

Time is a finite resource so managing time is very important but the limitless resource is energy, this article beautifully point different variables that can be used optimally by me to get the maximum output. The different ways are clearly mentioned in the article so I am not further repeating or elaborating that.

    My answers:

    1. I can not quantify my journey (life) because whatever I have achieved is almost negligible what I want from my life but I can say I have taken first step (in fact most difficult one) in deciding and marching towards my vision.

    2. “Entrepreneur” this word is the most important word in the dictionary of my life……..

    3. In physical energy aspects I am better than normal or I can say there is no as such concern about my physical energy but sometimes division of energy became improper. In emotions sometimes I became impatience or anxious. Mind- if in some work or activity I do not want to involve but if there is no choices other than involvement than it creates problem of low productivity, tension and impatience behavior.

    4. Sir thanking u for this question as I said I like this article because of ‘HOW’. One aspect that I have to work is destroy the different roots that I created for myself (liking-disliking), by this I can have better enthusiasm and energy in some broader areas. Second thing I will narrow down the gap between my likings and requirements or people likings. How- I will ask one question to myself daily at bedtime that “how much work I have done today that I liked and that I not liked” and make a balance between these two.

  26. hello everyone.. This is shubham, a first year student at Kirloskar Institute. At first I thought it will be a boring article talking about the same old stuff like getting up early, benefits of yoga, positive thinking (in which my father and i truly believe) but it actually caught me by surprise as it had all these points but also other points on how to channelize our energy in best possible way. now coming to the four Questions (it sounds as if only after answering these four questions I'll be able to cross the holy river)
    Where am I at present?
i am at Kirloskar institute at Harihar.
In life I am at a path of self discovery. I ve never felt so strongly about my future as I do now. I ve started taking each and every duty which I ve taken up, very seriously. Previously when i used to work for Pragati(a rural marketing fair which KIAMS organises every year) I didnt feel for it but since this New year I ve started taking my role very seriously and i can see the effect it is having on me. i feel more responsible now, i donot feel sleepy in most of the classes even when i ve slept at 2AM, I try and learn and participate in class as much as possible and most of all i feel I can Achieve anything I want to because I have what it takes in me.
Very long post but its not the end..hee hee.
At This point of time in life i feel very energetic and ready to take on any thing and feel very positive about the future.
    now quest no. 2.
I want to be an entrepreneur. I dont know when I ll be that. but i know what I want to own. I want to have my Own Tshirt shop(where one will get customized hand painted T shirt) then i want to own a small cozy Cafe which will have very comfortable couches and excellent foood( especially breads and cakes)(oh and Iced Tea also:)) and then may be if i have time and money left then a poster shop(it will have excellent posters ranging from hollywood classics to music to sports to funny quotes to alcohol to everything). So that is what i dream to be. I ve always felt very strongly about the T shirt shop and Cafe from my collge days.
answer no.3 my shortcomings in energy managemnt is
    a. I am not able to manage my emotions always. i mean most of the time i keep my cool and manage my emotions in a manner that i am able to do my work but sometimes people's attitude and cage like environment really gets to me. Also there are times when i feel at the top of the world and then swoosh i am in a valley... SO I TRY TO manage these emotions but i think it will take me a lot of time to manage these.
another aspect where i need to work is developing concentration power and focussing on the work i am doing esp. when i am working on net i tend to drift away from assignments to surfing net. Apart from these i feel i am doing Ok in managing my physical energy. i havnt adopted early to bed early to rise but i sleep for 7 hrs and maintain my diet.
last answer and i ll be able to cross the Holy river(:)
To make sure that i am able to utilize my emotions in best possible way i will try using the breathing exercise and will also try and see things from other perspective and try solving the issue rather than just draining my emotions over it. also i ll try sticking to my assignment rather than playing games and surfing the internet. I ll take out half an hour specially for this instead,.
    that s all Folks
If anyone is interested in hand painted T shirts u can contact me through this blog

  27. Hi everyone!!!
I’m sharad prusty from KIAMS B-11.
To be frank when I started reading this article, because of its title I had a view that it would be an article which would concentrate more on the spiritual front and would not be something practical, as in, I know meditation helps, but who has the time for that, but this turned out to be a complete surprise. Thank you sir, thanks a lot! for this enlightment. I don’t find anyone in such a huge energy management crisis as myself. I have been struggling hard to manage my energy and time here since my orientation days. I get drained very fast, plan every night that next day everything would go as planned, but everyday I fail miserably. Nothing goes as planned, everyday new priorities come up and planned priorities end up at the same fate. This article has shown me a ray of hope and most importantly gave me a real boost of enthusiasm as I came to know I’m not the only one facing this, even the top management officials face this and this can be taken care of.

Now for the answers sir had asked for:
    1. Right now I’m in that phase where I’m sure of what I want to do but I’m caught up in finding ways to achieve that. I want to concentrate on my long term goal but I’m so caught up in fulfilling my short term needs that I am not doing anything towards my aim rather. I just need to figure out a way to get my aim and I am sure it will be a success someday.
    2. Professionally I want to become a successful manager first and then move on to be a entrepreneur and personally I want to be a good son to my parents, whom they can be proud of first. Do things for them which they always dreamt of their son doing, give them that sense of pride.
    3. On the body I fail totally. I don’t get the required sleep and skip breakfasts. Spirit also seems to be a major concern. I allocate more time to things which are not so important and spend very less or no time doing what I like or what I can do best. I often end up doing things monotonously and forget about my preference or interest.
    4. To overcome my energy crisis I have figured out some of the ways which this article suggests and I find appropriate to me:
    • I will go to bed by 12 am and get up at 6:30am everyday morning.
    • I will have breakfast everyday and not skip them anymore.
    • I will devote sometime everyday to thinking about my ways of achieving my future goals and work towards them inch by inch. And I think the goal chart I prepared for myself which was given by sir should also help me in that.
    • I will try to remain more active and physically fit by taking up more of sports.
    • I will try to practice my core values in my everyday behavior and take control of life rather than just drifting away with time clueless.
    • Finally I would dedicate a fixed amount of time say 2 hours or so everyday to myself where I would do things I love to do most and things that I really want to do.

  29. hello everyone,
This is Anant from KIAMS B-11.
Thank you very much for such a great aticle, it gave me a lot of understanding regarding the things that can be done to manage our energy effectively n use it in a right manner. It is really necessary in today's world to manage time effectively because we are wasting it like anything.

Now lets talk about the answers to the questions
Rite now i think i m at a very important stage of my life, because what i do rite now will lead and affect my life in the future. Also i m stuck in between selecting the rite way to lead to my goal. I know my goal but i m not able to get the right path which will lead me to this goal.

Next, i see myself as a successful and efficient manager in in the future and then i want to become a successful enterpreneur. As a whole in life i want to become a successful person who is looked upon by others in the future.

The problem that i face is that i don't get enough amount of sleep, due to which i evem feel tired in the morning. The reason for this is tat i m not able to complete my work in time, which leads to sleepless nights sometimes. I also miss the breakfast regularly which disturbs the whole mechanism of my body. Also there a quite a lot of things that go on in my mind, due to which i m not able to concentrate on one thing that is important at that moment.

To overcome my these weaknesses, i will try and sleep early and get up early so that i can have breakfast and i remain energetic the whole day. Also i go for morning workout daily so that i remain relaxed and healthy. Also each day i will devote some time with myself so that i m able to gather all the things i did in the whole day and make a note of all the things i need to do the next day. I will give a thought about my future goals and lead my path in that way only and not divert from it.

  30. Hi all, this is megha dhanda from kiams

    1. Like many others even I was thinking on the same lines for past some days. I could not give my 1st term because I wasn’t well. I was advised to sleep on time and exercise regularly, and not skip breakfast. I followed the regimen for sometime but then floundered. I do it sporadically. The main problem with me is that I plan every day but I don’t follow it or rather I believe that I am not able to follow it because I get caught up in the daily chores and other trivial matters.

    2. I want to work with specially-abled children and make a good living for myself and my family. But I am still vague about the path and i am trying to clear it.

    3. I find myself irritable and that's probably because I expect a lot from others.
i don’t work out at all and i think this is the root of many of my problems.

    4. I have decided to sleep by 12 and get up by 7.
And follow a schedule which i have prepared for myself.
I will use three lens approach to deal with issues with people.

It was an engaging read and writing it down makes the rules makes them much easier to follow.

  31. hi all,
this is abhishek sharma, pursuing my PGDM from KIAMS, and generally trying to live my life without stepping on too many toes.
    1. right now i am going through a novel phase of my life, too many new things to observe and interact with, too many dreams and nightmares coming alive, and generally lots and lots of data to process. im at a phase wherein im starting to wake up and realise my responsibilities(yea i know..about time), but knowing myself i'd say its a good start, and im sure to make for the lost time.
2.i want to (eventually) become a tour operator, taking people through wilderness, and letting them connect to nature and appreciate its gifts and wonders, and realise how fruitful life can be even without the modern trappings. dont get me wrong, im all for fast cars, mobiles, jacuzzis IF they make you feel great. but personally id like nothing better than to sit in the shade of a tree and lose myself in a book. and so id like my professional life to enable me to get to that tree, while fulfilling all of my roles as prescribed for a man in his second phase of life, i.e. the grihastha ashram.
3.im afraid my energy management is haywire at the moment.(understatement of the year)im chronically sleep deprived, and not because i study too much. i get good genes from parents so i guess it hasnt begun to tell on my health just now, but i have to do something about it now. i make it a point to have breakfast in the morning, but still miss it anyways atleast 4-5 days in a week. one thing ill say in my favour is that i love to play on the field. i dont like just running, need to have a ball or something to run after, but i try to make the most of compulsory sports hour here at KIAMS. i guess energy is not a problem right now, but im sure im pushing my body.
4.im happy to say that im going to overcome my inertia this time, and actually get up and shake myself a bit
a.going to get up and 6.30 pm and run. dont worry, i have something to run after.
    b.will have breakfast, everyday
c.will shun bread (i know the article says nothing about bread, thats just one of my long pending resolutions)
d.i should get my goals a little more concrete, maybe ill take a print out and stick it over my desk

p.s. there should be something in the article about the importance of a bath. i speak for myself, but most people will agree that a bath is one of the greatest revitalizers. sure beats the strongest coffee. i guess it has something to do with body temperature. needs more research

  33. Hi, I am Arjun.P.M, 1st year PGDM at KIAMS. The article just showed me many a things i have been going through. My Energy Management is in a really crisis.

At this point of my life as far as i feel am still sailing with the land not yet in sight and i keep guessing the direction to sail. Still a longway to go in life i am keeping my focus on the way ahead. Learning from each day in my life and trying to get better. I am optimistic in life and hope life has better things in store.

Moving ahead i want to be doing be in a position where i am enjoying what i am doing to the maximum. I want to have a good mix of work, enjoyment and time with friends & family. Being too busy in what we do we slowly loose our good friends and relationship with family while they are the ones who can motivate you at any point of life. I really want to fulfill my dreams in the best way.

In the case of energy management things are in real mess. Lack of proper sleep and Proper food. I have never had a good schedule for sleeping in my life. Frankly speaking one of my biggest problem is waking up in the morning and i have been trying to overcome it for a longtime but only failed. In the last 5-6 years i can tell i have not had breakfast more than 5-6 months. Also i do things when and where i get it. No long term planning and failing to keep focus for longtime. I have found it difficult to stop mixing up my emotions. A bad day in class/ college reflects in other areas also and also in my attitude with friends and family & vice-versa.

After going through the article i have felt i should work on trying to concentrate on keeping focus and trying to put away habit of last minute rush by having a long term focus. Also should work on stopping myself from mixing up emotions by relaxing for sometime and hope the breathing exercise works out. Also need to develop a proper sleep schedule and will try to improve the frequency of breakfasts. Also will make it a point to keep aside time for my friends and family.

  34. hi all....
    this is ankita sharma @kiams
this article cooldn't come at a better time and thanks a lot sir for bringing it into notice
    now for the questions
    1) i am right now at the cross roads of life where one path seems as good as the other and am having a hard time taking effective and long term decisions and am at a very bad point as far as energy management is concerned as iam having my troughs and highs in a random and unsystematic manner
2)interesting question....where do i want to go i have literally viewed life as a journey in which not the end but the journey matters its about how much can u learn in the way because end will come when u stop learning. a bit of spiritual one i guess ... ummm down to brass tacks ... i want to be successful in my own terms and success in my language means being able fulfill my own expectations of self and as i have a long standing of owning something of my own a thing created by me so i too want to explore the path of entrepreneurship.. i want to improve with every step i take we can't reach perfection but it does not mean that we should leave trying...
3)crisis crisis crisis.... so much so that i am always tired although most of the time i maintain my cool and am collected but its just a outer facade since i don't let on my emotions this is having an adverse effect on my health both mental and physical and most of the times its my dear and near ones who suffer because of
my bottled up feelings because i let myself have a go at them which is really taking them too much for granted although i have never compromised on my sleep and make it a point to sleep at least 7 hours every day but i do skip meals a lot especially breakfasts and sometimes lunches too so not a hope of balanced diet
apart from that i take a lot of pressure which is now taking its toll as iam able to handle less and less everyday and it was just reaching breaking point when i controlled myself and ihope i am on my way to recovery...
    4) i will make it a point not to miss breakfasts ( maybe only on nids)and will start sharing my inner thoughts if not by speaking then by writing them down ( an infinitely more better way)umm rest i hope i am going the right way and yes i always had a very good source of energy within me and that was my belief in higher power and am trying to improve my viewpoint of looking at this source so that i can just make it my own special souce of mental and spiritual strength
after going through the article it has just reinforced what all moms and dads that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and yes this article just proves that instead of managing out time we should just put it to more better and efficient use...

  35. Hi All,
This is Arshinder Jeet Kaur, pursuing my PGDM from KIAMS.
First of all i would like to thank Nagendra sir for this article and more than that making it sure that all of us do read it positively. I read this article twice(last night and this morning). When i read it last night i thought it wasnt for me as i do almost everything right that is needed(7-8 hrs. sleep, good diet, frequent breaks while working/studying,regular connection with my family) so i just shut down my laptop and went to sleep. but before actually falling asleep things started pouring in my mind that whatever positive things i used to do when i turned up @KIAMS,i am either totally eliminating them from my life now or reducing their frequency and all this was happening so unconsciously that i didnt even get a slight idea about all this happening till the time i read this article, that is, last night. so here are the answers to your questions sir:
    1) right now i am doing what i wanted to do in life but not in a right way.and as doing right things and doing them in a right way are totally different so i would like to concentrate on the 2nd part. this being the most crucial phase of my life, this phase would make me what i will be in future(as a person as well as a professional).
2)as my father always say being a good human being is most important.so i want to be a good human being first of all and after that a good manager, managing both the professional and personal life well.
3)my shortcomings in energy management are mostly in the area of mind as my concentration power is decreasing day by day(the reason for which is that for some time i was trying to be a multi-tasker and do a number of things together),the next thing is that i concentrate on present crisis situation only and dont plan and strategise for future, and the third one is that i dont do any kind of exercise regularly(which is very important for me atleast at this point of time).
    4) i am planning to overcome these by making it a ritual to do yoga and pranayam every morning which will be an exercise and also help in increasing my concentration power,i will resume to my old ways of doing one thing at a time,at least for important things.i will try and spend more time on things which are important for my future....

  36. I am Subramanian from TAPMI Batch 15 . I work for McAfee Inc(Bangalore).

On the Article “ Manage energy and not time”, is one of those kind which is easy to understand and good to follow.

The old Paradigm of getting things done emphasized on time management and now the human potential movement that is sweeping across our corporate life is taking energy management as a basic template for living a balanced life. So the new paradigm is all about energy and more importantly how to renew those energy to have a balanced life.

In fact, its foundation lies in the wisdom of the ancient texts of Upanishads and the Vedas, and Traditional Chinese Medicine, a self contained 5000 year old system for living in harmony. All of these bodies of ancient wisdom recognize that energy is the fundamental principle of life, and if it is not harnessed or renewed, major struggles, symptoms and imbalances manifest in our daily life.

Every one should have a balanced routine both at work and home. Every one should take some as cardinal principles and try to never compromise on those Cardinal principles. Some of the habits I adore and keep close to my heart are very much highlighted in this article. But still, I am not able to practice them like a fanatic nor practice it like a ritual apart from my other rituals. So this article has re kindled by desire to follow a more balanced routine and concentrate more on one thing at a time. Personally my take going forward would be to concentrate on one task at a time rather trying to multi task. It has been also proved scientifically that our human brain cannot do two things at the same time.

As pointed out in the article, “the implicit contract between organization and their employees today is that each will try to get as much from the other as they can as quickly as possible and then move on without looking back”.

Today the whole world is full of opportunities and opportunist so it is inevitable for us not to be part of this. In order to really enrich the life of employees, Organization should invest in people to help them build and sustain their value. This should percolate from Top Down and the culture of the organization should be matured enough to foresee the ROI on such initiatives.

Just as nature has its own natural pulses and rhythms - the ebb and flow of tides, the lunar cycle, the seasons, the daily rising and setting of the sun, we also experience wavelike movements between activity and rest.

Our breathing, brain waves, body temperature, heart rate, hormonal levels, and blood pressure all have healthy and "unhealthy" rhythmic patterns. Daily rest and renewal is the key to balancing our four sources of energy. If we have more energy, we have the capacity to do more and enjoy life even more. If we can achieve a balance of being physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused and spiritually aligned, we are well on the way to health and happiness.

  37. Hi this is Shyam Abhishek from KIAMS B-11.
Before coming here. I determined that I will do all the things that come to my way with great enthusiasm. I feel that I am a self-motivator. I wanted to excel in every field I opted, be it games, studies, understanding any new thing etc. I decided not to study for marks this time. MBA seemed to be a great opportunity to manage every wrong thing in me. Since the beginning I have been trying to manage my time and allocate it equally to various tasks arising daily. But wasn't successful. Also one most important thing is that I have been searching for a true MENTOR in everyone I come across. I assess every potential person who can guide me. I still could not find one. I have found that 24 hours a day is far less than I need. Due to this I started sleeping less. I used to go to Gym regularly, but here in kiams I go intermittently due to time being a limited resource. Nowadays I have started getting up around 7 am and doing Pranayam ( as i was suggested by Nagendra sir because I wasn't able to concentrate on one thing). I feel good after 'inhaling-exhaling' fresh cold breath early in morning.
Now the answers to the questions:
    1) Right now I am in a transition phase. I want to change myself completely. I try to do everything that is necessary to survive in forthcoming tough corporate life. Truly said in article, I want to make everything I need to do 'a Ritual', so that it becomes more adaptable and routine. I sleep early to get up early. I spend time to write how I worked to utilize every minute of my day.

    2) I want to become a good strategist and CEO of a company.I want to see things in a broad perspective and learn the ability to relate the things. I want to satisfy my personal & professional life both to satisfy my self. I want to achieve self-actualization, a state when I feel I do not need anything anymore.

    3) I used to manage the things on time basis. The article has given me an idea to manage energy and not time. Managing Mind energy has been a tough task for me. My concentration is not good. While doing one thing my mind space gets occupied with other things I need to do. So I feel unable to give full dedication to single task at a time. The biggest problem is converting long term aspirations into short, small activities. I think because of disturbance in mind I am not able to see which activity is actually leading me to my long term goal. One more difficulty is in deciding which activity is more lucrative and which is less (setting priority).

    4) Still I haven't decided exactly which activities I will undertake to overcome these shortcomings. As I have written, few things I have already started doing. Now I will decide a path and choose what things I will/should not do(it is rather easier). Instead of being reactive, I shall try to be proactive. I will try to learn and unlearn the things. This will be a continuous process.......

  38. Hi!!
I am Priyanka Sahu,a first year student at KIAMS.
The article "Manage your energy,Not your time" has really been a source of inspiration because i have been thinking in the same line since a few days.I knew there is a problem with my energy levels but I could not gauge the right reason.I wanted to rectify things but didn't knew where to start from.I really liked what Mr.Prabhu from TAPMI has said that unfocused mind wastes a lot of energy which I have realised myself.
This article has really been insightful and has pushed me further to peep into myself and work for self improvement
    As for the questions asked
1.This is a point in my life where I know I can just go exploring.with every passing day and with every person I meet I get introduced to a new facet of life.I am just too young to say that I have learned this from my life. There is still a long way to go.
2.I want to be successful in my own terms.A state in my professional life where I can say I am satisfied with what I have achieved.I am heading towards learning human resource and knowing them better as this is what i want to do and carve a niche in the same field.
    3.Shortcomings in the energy management
I think there is an acute energy crisis here.I donot get adequate sleep which affects my concentration in class.I donot get adequate exercise nor even mild an if I do so(running and jogging) I feel completely drained out of energy.
In terms of emotions I really get angry very soon and I dont express it and that kills me.
My anger is all because I want things around me to be more disciplined and slightly according to rules which generally dont happen.
I skip breakfast because when i sleep late I prefer completing my sleep in the morning rather than having breakfast
4.To overcome energy crisis I have figured out 3 basic ways and rest will fall in place automatically
(a)To sleep at proper time most probably by 1:00 am so that I am awake by 7:00 am
(b)Start off with a regular 45 min of exercising time where i can have my jogging and breathing exercise
(c)I need to learn that things around me are really chaotic and can't go according to me or as disciplined as I want to.
I need to control my anger

Apart from this I just want to devote 2 hours to myself where I just want to read the books I want to and learn the way I want

  39. Hello, Everyone....
This is Rahul Ghosal from KIAMS batch 11.Yes this is very good article to learn from it.But problem is to implement in my life because every time i say myself from next time onward i will follow this and next time "NEVER COMES".But this time i applied couple thing in my life i would try to turn this into my Habit in longterm. I would like to THANK sir because after reading this article breakfast rate has increased for me as well as others which was rare thing.
now come to the question answer part..

1.In my life I'm like vagabond roaming here and there not getting real meaning life.yes i am in learning phase where lot of thing are challenging and new. From now onward i will apply the wide lens rule where i ask myself, “Regardless
of the outcome of this issue, how can I
grow and learn from it?”so that i can over come negatives and be optimistic.
2.what i want become?? yes from my childhood i wanted become pilot but now i hope there is little chance for that...
now if you ask me what i want to become i will say i want to be good human being, good son, good leader personally and professionally...

3.My shortcomings in energy management are mostly in the area of mind as my concentration and lack of confidence level. No future planning. No clear focus of what i want to do and what i do for it...

    4. How can i over come my shortcomings?? sir its a very difficult question to answer..
Its a matter of realization until i really realize its importance its very difficult make that into habit.I am trying to cultivate some habit habit like Every time doing something i will analyze it and talk to myself so that i can understand how things could have done better way...
and most important thing exercise and sport activity, because health is important factor for long term. Its kind of challenge be healthy and fit and we always forget its important and do what should not have done like skipping breakfast not doing exercise lot of other thing. From now i will try to spend at least 1 hour for sports everyday..

  40. Hello everybody...I am Mayank Jindal from KIAMS B11...
Q1) I am in the middle of my career and the most important phase of me life.It is a make or break situation for me. It is the time when I feel I must hone my skills and also brush up my knowledge so that I can face the real compoetitive world. I am in a precarious position of my life as i have no other option if I dont make a mark in this field. I have lots of responsibilities on my shoulders and have to fulfill them. Hope I am not in between Scylla and Charybdis.
Q2) As an individual,I want my presence to be felt in my family and among other kith and kins. I want to flourish my identity as a successful entrepreneur and carve out a niche for me. But in the short run I want to try my luck in the area of finance as a portfolio manager or an investment banker.
Q3) The shortcomings in my energy management are that I am unable to concentrate on any subject continuously for a substantial amount of time. I also get tired very soon and my lega start aching very soon whenever I play any outdoor sport. I am dog tired when I play any outdoor sport which requires some running. The extra fat which has accumulated in my body does acts as a hindrance and lets me down wherever some physical activity is concerned. Gosh!!! I am a fluffy and a pulpy boy with lots of shortcomings where I find my energy draining away my enthusiasm from many activities in which I was, once upon a time, dedicated a lot earlier. Lack of concentration and my paunch are the biggest shortcomings in the energy management.
Q4) This article is, no doubt, a very beautiful one and opens our minds and eyes in a number of ways to improve our efficiency and manage our energy resources. Even before reading this article, I am conscious about my shortfalls earlier also and am working on them and to some extent I am successful also. Since I cant run, due to ailment in my legs, I have decided to walk a lot at a fast pace which will burn the extra calories and fat which will settle the issue of my paunch. I have also decided to use the swimming pool in our campus for reducing the fat to my benefit. As far as concentration is concerned, I have done nothing so far to improve that but have assured myself that i have adequate amount of sleep so that I am always attentive to the classroom lectures and trust me, it has paid rich dividends as I never doze off in any of the classes for which my batchmates always comment/compliment me for that queer behaviour. Jokes apart...After going through this article, have learnt the art of concentration. I have decided to switch off the mobile when I am studying else those sms'es and calls are a constant hindrance to this and i have also decided to make a point that whenever I am in my room I shall check my mails only twice in a day and not regularly as and when it arrives. A short break while studying will also be a welcome move and thanks a lot to you sir for sending us this article and enlightening some basic concepts in energy management which was otherwise hidden in the sub conscious region of our hemisphere. Thanks for bringing it out and help us in discovering my real self and time to ponder over my career and goals.

  41. halo everybody,
    I am Nisha from Kirloskars
    1) where am i in life?
i am currently at a very important or at a crucial stage of my life, where what ever i do and learn from here at KIAMS is going to decide my career and may also say my

fate of life, because being from a very normal middle class family where my father had expired when i was just 9 years old, my mom has taken incredible efforts to get me to such

a position in a b-school, so i feel very responsible and i am trying to mold myself to the awaiting outside corporate world, but i will say that even though i have a clear

purpose in my mind, the progress towards that purpose is not at all clearly defined in me and i'm still tryin or on the process of finding the rightpath.

2)what do i want to become?
first of all i want to be a responsible daughter for my mom, who has been the sole great inspiration to me , i will be more satisfied even if i become half as responsible

and hard working as her. professionally i want to become a successful manager at the short run and in the long run i want myself to own a small firm and become an entrepreneur,

personally i want to lead a life which can set an example for my future generation to look upon.

3)what are my shortcomings in energy management?
i was in an illusion that i was managing energy very properly, but after reading this article my mind rewinded every aspect of my shortcomings in energy management.

physically i take my breakfast regularly and mostly have food at regular timings, but i lack in taking the nutrition needed for me, but the biggest worry of mine is i am a very

emotional girl who used to get broken up very easily which results in harming my own physical health directly or indirectly.

    4)how will I overcome them ?
i have made a decision, or can be said as a resolution that i will try to become more stable and build a steel in myself for not to get broken up for simple and may be

even silly reasons, secondly i had made up my mind to use my time and both energy in proper ways by striking out a proper balance between different aspects of my life and one

thing i had to improve is that the proper sleep i need, i will make sure that i give my body and mind the required rest so that i can bring out my full efficiency.

  42. Hello, i am shubha deep from KIAMS
I gained a lot from this article, this article tells how something is there which is more important then time i.e. energy.
    1.In terms where I am :-
I am still strugling to grasp the concepts taught in KIAMS,not feeling confident on the knowledge i am gaining here. Trying to learn as much as i can.

    2.What you want to become?
In my short term achievements I want to become confident and to get as much knowledge and exposure i can get. In long term, I want to use my skills in an organisation and want to become a key person in that organisation.

    3. Shortcomings in energy management:-
Firstly i think that i am wasting my energy a lot and not using it in right direction and also there is no fixed schedule of my daily routine this also waste my energy.

    4. After reading this article i am able tocheck that what the areas where i am wasting my energy and at those areas i will work out to save my energy and use that energy in positive way and avoid waste of energy and i think this in turn will also manage my time automatically and both the time and energy management will lead me to achieve what i want to.

  44. Hi All,

I am Vishnu from TAPMI. I am a Product/Project Engineer at a Construction equipment/Automobile company.

First of all thanks a bunch to Prof. Nagendra and all the fellow students at TAPMI and KIAMS, for initiating this discussion on energy management. This emphasis on Practice v/s just talk and debate is class is very inspiring.

    1) In terms of where I am in my life; I would say I am in an exiting and at the same time, unfamiliar territory.

I have recently shifted from an established company, to a company that has just started laying its foundations in India. This scenario excites me and at the same time demands much more than what I have given in the past.

On the personal front I am going to get married in a couple of months, which is again adding to the unfamiliarity of the situation; in a very nice way though 

    2) I see these times as an opportunity for me to move one notch up by getting the experience of being part of a team in charge of implementing a business strategy, that includes setting up a new factory, introducing new products and setting up information systems to lubricate the cross functional engine; that a business usually is.

These experiences I strongly believe will position me aspire for strategic roles in the Auto/Construction Equipment Business.

    3) The situation if viewed as an opportunity appears very rosy on paper, but as I have realised; demands a lot more of energy and focus to battle the uncertainty typical of these early phases in business.

I have realized thru the article that I have “Significant energy management deficits”, the last thing I need. I am constantly struggling to jog in the mornings, an activity that was second nature to me a year back. I am also scoring low on the MIND aspect of energy.

    4) I have identified the below routines as part of my Energy management, to begin with:

    a) Jog 4 times a week
    b) Eat light at the same time never starve
    c) Take two breaks, 15 min each (11.00 & 3.00) in a typical day to browse/read about my interest/hobbies etc.
    d) Check e mails only once every 2 hrs
    e) Fix a major agenda for next day, by the end of my work day.

  45. Hi everyone this is Vijay from KIAMS, batch-11

I think this article was really great and it was sent to us just at the right time coz I am really lagging in energy management (the score wasn’t good in the test given at the last). This article forces me to rethink about myself so as to bring about a positive change in my lifestyle .This article really speaks about the way i and probably the majority of us at KIAMS are working. Basically what I lack is time management coz due to this mismanagement we tend to spend our energy in unproductive activities.
    1. In terms of life I m in the learning phase though I wish this phase shud go on thru out my life in order to become a successful individual. I m trying to gain as much knowledge and experience as I can .I think this is a phase which wud decide the degree to which I am able to achieve my goals in life .As Nagendra Sir said this one year is the most crucial point in my life where i have to put in lot of efforts in order to be employable...
    2. I want to become a good human being whom the society recognises. As my career goes I want to be in those top positions in the organizations with an ever learning attitude .I also want to contribute to the society in whatever way I can .Agreeing to what Ranjit said , I would also do what I really enjoy in order to sustain my personal identity.
    3. My energy management is not good .I do almost all those things which are mentioned in the article as what people generally do .I do multitasking which creates confusion and chaos, also the sun wakes me that too late (don’t know how to sleep early in order to get up early), the worst thing with me is i do things at the last time (working seriously hard on it), also physical and mental agility is a problem for me. I become restless and impatient in demanding situations, this happens sometimes only as I love working in these kinds of situations.
    4. After reading this article I am a bit sure that I would be able to overcome my shortcomings and manage my time and energy optimally and efficiently .I will try to follow the suggestions stated in this article. I would have to work hard to manage my sleeping hours, but with the help of the recent change in our campus timings I might go through this also.

  46. hello everyone,
I am brajesh ranjan from KIAMS.

first i would like to thank sir because after reading this article i know why i feel energy less sometimes. now i will talk about those 4 questions:-

1.in terms of life, i am in the stage where i can build my future. this is the last chance or the first chance, i don't know but its a very crucial time for me because from here, i can start my work to secure my future.if i will not do, then may be i will not get any other chance.

2.i don't know what i want to become, but in terms of life, i want to be a good human being like my father but i also want to be practical in my life.
if i will talk about career, i don't like to work under someone. so first i want to earn money, then i will think about what i have to do because if i want to start any business or anything, that needs money.

3.if i will talk about my shortcoming,i never sleep on time and i often wake up feeling tired.i always skip my breakfast.
i cant concentrate on one thing at a time.
i become angry very easily but i cant express my anger.because of this reason, most of the times i got tensed and i start smoking.
i don't like if my teammates don't work properly and then i got angry because i want every thing should be disciplined and proper.
most of the time i express my other emotions very easily in front of others.

4.now i will control my emotions and i will try to quit smoking. actually i started to control my emotions before reading this article and for that i always smile and enjoy in everything.
earlier i do only those things in which i enjoy but now i will enjoy all the things which i do.
and i will try to sleep early so that i will feel fresh in the morning.

  47. Hello everybody. I am Shourav- student of 1st yr PGDM in kiams.First of all thank you sir for sending such an article and also making everybody read it.While going through the examples of the article i was felling as if the author has written it about me and my life.My energy and time management is in real crisis.everyday i take out sometime to think about myself, what i have done the whole day and also what are good and bad things i did.i try to get the answers of all this, some i get and some i dont.I try to find those answers but the problem with me is that even after finding the answer i am not able to implement them in my life.As a result my life goes on in the same way everyday facing the same + added other problems.
In this article the best thing i liked is that the author here is not only talking about"What" are the problems but also about "How" the problems can be solved. So this time i really want to change myself as i m able to see a route to follow.
    Now coming to the questions
    1. In terms of my life
right now i m sure of what to do in my life but i m not able to do it in the right way or in a systematic way.so i ll try to do it in a better way because to do things in a systematic way is more important than just doing the right thing.
    2. what i want to become
well i want to have a Tea Estate of my own.i have dreamt of it since my childhood. As i from Assam i know about this business very nicely and also my family is in this business so i really want to do it.i have some plans according to which i m working and i m sure i ll be able to fulfill my dream.
    3.shortcomings in energy management
In the case of energy management things are in real mess.there is lack of proper sleep, food and exercise. I don’t have a good schedule for sleeping in my life.Since the time i left my home for further studies i could never fixed a time for sleep. Frankly speaking one of my biggest problem is waking up in the morning and i have been trying to overcome it for a longtime but only failed.I skip my breakfast regularly for years and the result is that i m suffering from many stomach problems. Also i do things when and where i get it there is no proper scheduling for it. As a result everything get messed up at the last moment. I have found it difficult to stop mixing up my emotions. A bad day in class reflects in my behaviour and i feel very irritated all the the time and even don’t talk properly with my friends and family.
    4.overcoming them
I would like to take the help of the breathing exercise and hope that it works out for me.I will make it a point that i follow the schedule which i always make but dont follow. and lastly i would like to keep sometime doing things which i always loved and wished for but i was not able to do them at the present moment.....

  48. i'm Krishna Ranjan from kirloskars B-11.
this article has really changed the way of thinking.most of the time, i have felt all of these issues personally without knowing what actually the energy management is.upto my masters degree, i have been the chemistry topper of my university because somehow i have utilised my energy there.when i go through the article, i find it very difficult to place myself on the scale of energy management. to be true, i am in a condition of full fledged energy crisis here.
this article reflects the present condition, where we are running behind the money and success making the source of energy a desert.before answering the question we really need to understand that we are the source as well as the consumer of this energy. to be in the long run, we need to maintain equilibrium between the source and the consumption.this is all about the energy management.
1.at present, i find myself at a threshold, where i need a push which can send me to the other side of the world which is full of competition and reality.
    2. i want to deliver my skills and knowledge for the welfare of society and want to become a successful manager as well as a responsible citizen of the society.
    3. i really find it difficult to utilize my full potential.the shortcomings may be my way of thinking, my behavior,my life style. i really need to recognise those shortcomings.
4.i need to reschedule my activities and execute these accordingly.i want to make energy management as my habit, then i will be able to coordinate the four dimensions energy.

  49. Hi!!
I am Rahul Dhamija,a first year student at KIAMS.
thank you sir, for posting this article & giving us a break to think where are we, what are goals & where are we heading towards.
    1)where am i in life
im in that phase of life wher life hs ggiven me an oppurtunity to give my life a direction where want to be. if i really consider myself as product with respect to industry, i would say i m in developing stage.
    2) What you want to become?
franky saying i really don't know what i want to become. sorry sir, i dont have that lakshya in my life, i m sailing in a boat over which i donot have any control.
    3) Shortcomings in energy management
    BODY:
a)i am not able to get the required amount to sleep.
2)i miss on my physical exercise part to a great extent(which i loved to do at one time), its not that i m too busy with my work but the thing is i m not able to manage my time.
3)That is why i usually sleep in every class except yours.
    EMOTIONS:
a)As i said i m not able to manage my time, so im not able to give time to my loved ones, my friends ,my family who are actually far from me.
b)the other thing is im not able to face my mistakes , asin regretting about college, but for everything we cannot be depend on college ,at least willingness to read.
c)then expectations from family(about career, about everything)which is most important thing but still coming at the last point, but i really wish i could atleast get closer to their expectations.
MIND:I m type of a person who actually needs a kick or an inspiration from life, to concentrate or focus my mind towards my goals, & i really see my inspiration in you, thank you sir. earlier the thing which inspired me to work was when i used to work for cultural(quite funny i know)but i really learnt a lot.
SPIRIT:I m not able to prioritize my work , that is why i waste my time & energy i those activities which are neither too important nor i would love to do.
    4)how will I overcome them ?
i have already started overcoming my shortcomings:
a)i have stopped regretting about college and started taking it positively as life has given an opportunity to work harder to be in the race.
b)i am trying to manage my time so that i prioritize my work & can also take up those activities which i like to do& which are really important .
c)i would be setting goals for myself everyday, so that one day finally i can identify my lakshya in those small goals.

Firstly, I thanks Sir for giving an eye opening enlighten of our life, which I forget or which I do not want to learn because I used to do whatever comes in my life. I commit myself that this reply was actually meeting the deadline of a new assignment. Actually I am sorry myself, not to you sir. In other way, I always used to look on supply side, and just reacting to immediate crises and demand. I had made my life such that only making equilibrium whenever demand comes in and meeting with the other factors of demand i.e. time, grade, etc.
This article is also redefining core values which we forget and the never follow because we do not want to change. Actually it emphasise on the personality which have directly affect on the professional.
This article pinched me a lot, now anyhow I am reforming myself not for sake of reply.

1.Actually I m in the first stage of my life where I m learning for livelihood which PGDM give me.

2.After clearing first stage, I will learn for earn money

Then in third stage, I will learn for earn wealth. Actually earning money and earning wealth are different according to me.

3.Body management crisis: Sleeping late and waking up exactly on the classes timing. This cause affects all of my activities throughout a day, i.e. no time for exercise. Due to late in daily activities, I am not able to think of myself.
Emotion management crisis: Because of the above problem, I am not able to complete my work on time. It increases my burden of work in a compounded way that leads to frequently finds myself feeling irritable, impatient, or anxious at work, especially when work is demanding.
Mind management crisis: Because of the above chain of problem, I found myself in the trap of spending much of my day reacting to immediate crises and demands rather than focusing on activities with longer-term value and high leverage. I don’t take enough time for reflection, strategizing, and creative thinking.
Spirit management crisis: Right now, I m not able to find out. Anyways, in future I would explore.

4.For first two shortcomings I had decided to start with early sleep and wake-up, so that it rejuvenates my ideas, thoughts, daily aspirations also it helps to complete the work early which helps my energy management towards both body and emotions.
The most important to overcome from the shortcomings is to start regular looking of goals, aspiration, vision, etc and taking control measures which removes all problem and helps me in achieving my dream.

But it still requires self determination from the bottom of heart to change.

  51. hello everyone...i m shilpi of PGDM I from KIAMS.
regarding the article...well!. Many a times.. i have a feeling of leading of a very mechanical life everytime chasing time to meet deadlines....This is something that frustrates me and i wonder that if something could add difference to it....
This article was different coz it was not about someone or something happenening in this world that we are expected to know by the virtue of being MBA students or not knowing about which would put us in the category of misfit as MBA students. This was something about our very ownselves, something i could relate to...with every example...every situation...and something that in real sense will add value to my personality and help me to emerge as a better manager.

    1) this according to me s the deciding phase of my life...though i have a fair idea of what do i want to be and how shall i reach there...this is the time i can equip myself with everythingo chase my dream...This is the time realze my potential, exploit the best of the opportunity, learn, grow and give a direction to my life.
It is now that i have realized that life should no longer be running in the dark tunnel with no ends visible...I need to give my life a direction, a goal "lakshay" that will motivate me to achieve the standard that i have set for myself...Its time to light the spark within myself that will keep me enlighten on my way to my dream.

    2) In my life I want to be the best wherever i am...closing my eyes and asking myself as ri what is it that i want to be...i see myself as a satisfied person both professionaly and personally. In my professional life i want to create a name and set landmark in the creative business field...

    3) As mentioned earlier, i always had this feeling of my life turning out to be mechanical and i have relized that it is not because of the amount or kind of work i do but the way i do them...I have no time allocation, no rituals to guide my work schedule so i am always doing my work in bits & pieces...which keeps me always busy with practically nothing.

    4) I now will sense put efforts to lead a better managed life, by having a fixed routine atleast to sleep and get up....Devoting some quality time in the morning meditating to keep my mind calm & at peace and try to finish one work at a time, nto jumping between many works that decreases my effeciency.I hope i will be a better manager by these efforts.

  52. Hi! This is Shashank Porwal from KIAMS B-11.
First of all I would like to thank Nagendra sir for this wonderful article on "energy management”. After reading the article I found that the problems discussed in the article were the same which I actually face in my daily life. I liked the article because it not only talks about the problems but also talks about how to deal with these problems.
Now coming to those four questions:
Where am I? At present I am in the crucial stage of my life in which I can revolutionize myself as a person .This is preparatory phase of my corporate career in which I can explore myself as much as I can. This is the phase upon which my future will depend.
What I want to become? I just want to stand perfect on my expectations with me .I want to achieve something which can give me a feeling of self-satisfaction. I not only want to become a successful corporate but also a successful citizen of my society.
My shortcomings? After reading the article I found that the main problem that I face is wasting more energy in various other activities which don’t serve my real purpose. Second problem is that that I start things very enthusiastically but face difficulty in maintaining the same level of enthusiasm up to the end. Third problem with me is that though I can work with concentration but it doesn’t last for the longer duration and I take breaks after the very short period of intervals.
How will I overcome? To remove my shortcomings I will try to follow the rituals discussed in the article. I will also try to do yoga and pranayama regularly which I do but irregularly. Regularly, at night I will give myself a feedback for my whole day activities and plan for next day activities .This may help me in managing my energy.

2 what i want to become?

3what are your shortcomings in energy management.
I dont know when to conserve and when to use full capacity of my inner strength.lack of concentration is another shortcoming.

  54. halo friends,
    this is kingston from KIAMS
the first look at the article gave me a feeling that it was one of those articles which is gonna give a brief lecture to 'do this and not that'stuff, frankly

accepting i read the article just because of the (strict) compulsion from nagendra sir, but then at one point i said to myself,'hey this is kinda interesting!!'

    1) where am i in life?
a very honest answer to this question is 'I dont really know', i am one of those cases who joined this b-school just because i got a (unexpected!!) good score in CAT and then due to the pressure from my parents side. I entered this college least interested for anything, but almost 6 months here, i am getting transformed into a new fellow. i have for the first time taken up a major responsibility( student coordinator of Pragati),which is teaching almost 5 new lessons everyday , so what i can say now is i am right now had reached a proper ship but still on the process of finding a proper shore for me to conquer it.

2)what do i want to become?
i want to answer this question in two different phases.
    5 YEARS FROM NOW:
a successfull manager in a company where i am still learning the all new aspects of my life, a comfortable salary and a satisfaction to my parents that the efforts that they had put on the development of their son had resulted in a very positive manner and to give them a satisfaction that they had brought up a good responsible man.
    28 YEARS FROM NOW:
an individual who should have a satisfaction that i didn't lead my life as just a very ordinary human but had accomplished something very unique and special(hasn't decided what field till now), where atleast there should be 10000 people who can recogniise me by not what i am but by what i had accomplished!!

3)what are my shortcomings in energy management?
ok, this question right now will have atleast 5 pages of answer from me now, so i will just list out the prime ones. first i am poor in maintaining my body(a plumpy guy by physique), used to skip breakfast regularly(sometimes even lunch), poor at alloting time for sleep also, a very laid back person who used to touch the book right 5hrs before exam only(even now, i am sending this at the last moment!!) and used to sacrifice my whole sleep during exam times, but as far as mental concentration is considered i dont find any problems, though get stressed out at times, i can recover myself in a short span of time.

    4)ways to achieve?
now, this is a very very tough question, after reading this article, i have made up my mind that i will start taking care of my physical health, will make my best efforts to take food at regular times, will also allot atleast 3hrs a day for activities to add value to my mba, and will try adopt the suggestions or ways given in the article and the lot of ways others have suggested in this blog, one thing for sure is that this article will have an impact in my life.

    Hi!
I am Arjit Bansal, i am a first year student at KIAMS. Sir your article was actually an eye opener for all of us.
    1) Where am i in my life?
i am in a very important stage of my life, it is very important for me to utilize these two years and do something for me and my family.
    2) What I want to become?
First of all I want to become a good human being who never thinks about others bad. As far as my career is concerned I have a very vague goal to become a key person in JP Morgan Chase. But everyday i think about it see so many constraints.
    3) My shortcomings in energy management?
I am very lazy person who keeps putting thing off. at the end they pile up and i face the real music.
Number of hours i sleep is very high.
My food habits are really bad, i am a junk food lover and can not stop my self even though i know it is bad for me.
    4) How will i overcome this?
I will fix my sleeping time.
Good food at the right time.
Will stop getting things piled up so that i can perform better and prove my competence.
Whenever i feel lazy, i will think about the goals that i have set for myself, which would help me in self-motivation.
Set small objectives to reach that higher goal

  56. hi, I am Alkama raj from kiams , batch-11
After reading the article the first thing that popped up in my mind was that I am among the very few persons who are facing problems in energy management but after reading the comment posted by all, I realized how wrong I was. This article had also made me realize that yes we are going ahead but in a wrong manner . ‘Knowing what to do’ is not the solution but ‘ Doing it ’ is the complete package . As we all know, no one is perfect here but even trying to overcome your weak points is an achievement in itself . So here I am trying to do that………….
At this phase of my life I am at the learning stage . Currently I am focusing at only learning things in all possible dimensions and trying to apply them practically and logically without making any judgements as I think it's too early for me to do that. I am also figuring out the best path to achieve my goal. My short term goal in life is to work in a growing /learning organisation for 4-5 years , exercise corporate skills and then expand my dad’s business. In longer run, I want to be in that position where I can say I have done something substantial and at which people will be proud at. My short comings in energy management are that, I lack in having healthy diet , ample exercise and sleep. I am not able to work according to routine. Sometimes I am physically active but mentally little stressed out . To over come these weak points I will try to acclimatize with an even routine life . I will focus on balancing the works that I generally like to do and the work that I should do and minimize the gap between the two .
Thanks a lot sir for showing all of us the right direction at the right time. I am also looking forward to knowing the method to unlearn things which are not necessary…………..!

  57. Hello, I am Bharat from KIAMS b-11.
First of all I would like to thanks nagendra sir that you have provided us a wonderful platform to
interact with tapmi’s future managers. Talking about the article it is one of the most fascinating articles I came across since I have start reading. It really opened my eyes that what I m doing and how can I improve my self. According to me it is more on self management where you have to manage about your energy also. I have noticed that since orientation I have been stranded between my priorities in life and college stuff( projects, presentations, sports, cultures, meetings etc.) and suddenly i found that I was doing injustice to myself, everyday it is hard to manage what I anticipate and planned. As a person everyone has got some weaknesses but since joining KIAMS I have been came across many problems with my physical health, though I was a sports person, the condition is that I am not able to sit on my lappy more than half an hours after that I have to take a break, this was due to my past carelessness with postures while sitting also. Some of my problems goes with the articles also like “inadequate nutrition, exercise, sleep, and rest diminish people’s basic energy levels, as well as their ability to manage the emotions and focus their attention.” Finally I noticed that I am struggling to manage my energy in the way I want. This article really provide me confidence as I thought that this is only happening to my but there are many. It is proved itself a morale booster for me when I got that I can overcome the shortcomings between me and my goals while reading the article.
Now following are answers of the questions which sir had asked for:
    1. tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
Right now I am at the path where I want to be and which I had chosen for my goals and dreams but still I am far away from my goals, sometimes I feel that whether I am going at the right pace and in right direction towards my goals. Practically I am at the half way of the ladder of my goals I have chosen but I can see my position and I know I will get my dreams come true.
    2. tell what you want to become
To be very honest I want to become a person who can solve any kind of problem regarding business or personal life. I want to be a good decision maker and finally a risk bearer entrepreneur and a nice human being.
    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management
The problems I am really facing is with my physical health, other than this inadequate nutrition, exercise, sleep, and rest as well as their ability to manage the emotions and focus my attention this sometimes results in irritation and frustration.
I can grade(at the scale of 10) myself on the following parameters.
    Body -4/10
    Mind -6/10
    Emotions -7/10
    Spirits -5/10
4 .how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article
To overcome my weakness I will have to take care of my physical health, I am planning to give each of my work a fixed time so that no one will be left out. I have to take help of meditation regarding control over my emotions which I had previously, talking about mind so I have to make sure myself that I will give priority to my own goals and concentrate on that besides other things and college stuff. If we talk about spirits , so I will have to get rid of the problem of decision making and for that I planning to have a 15 min of analytical reasoning part which is related to practical life.
Finally I can say that I will do my all work according to what I will anticipate and take breaks and reenergize myself to make the most of any opportunity.

  58. hi i m amit khanna from KIAMS PGDM I...

With the little bit of work experience that i have had in my life, i could very well relate myself with all the people & situation in the article....often during my work i have faced similar irritating situation where where u feel exhausted and u still have piles of work for u...consciously or unconsciuosly had my own special waysto revive my energy and here i could find many more of them...even the most effecient of the people suffer from bounded rationality and this demands to manage the energy of the body, emotion, mind & spirit...for which we should not forget that human beings are machines and should treat ourselves to be one...This article will surely add positive values in the way we all manage ourselves both professionally and personally...thanks to the Author and Prof.Nagendra for such a benefit..

coming to the answers of the questions asked...

    1) right now i m in the phase of life where it is high time for me to decide the direction of my life...this is the time that i can best utilize to enhance my knowledge..recogno=ize my potential, learn and grow with each day, explore & exploit the opportunities around me to test my competency level in the world i m planning to enter...this is the phase where i have to lay down such a strong foundation with the help of which i will be able to achieve all that i have promised to myself...this phase is the only resource, the optimum utilization of which can turn my dreams into reality...

    2) ever since i have dreamt of a career for myself...i have seen myself as a strong and successful businessman....i know i have it in me...to achieve my dream and so i m here...i want to show this world the magic of innocence or simply i want to be best player of the toy market in the world...this is one dream i live for and creating the ideas to fulfil it is what i eat, drink and sleep with...today i may not know actually how but i definately know this is what i want to be & will definately achieve it in my future...

    3) This question is something i have always asked myself...at times tried a lot to find the solutions but never was actually successful..so mismanaged is my life??? honestly and frankly...a lot...i have no ficed schedule to work or to take rest...it all depends on the availablity of time....most of the times i do not find my body and mind present at the same place, at the same time...keeping myself engaged with more than one work at a time usually irritates me...and continue long hour studies during exams seem to exhaust me to the extent that i feel like machine during these days..

    4) although i have given up to the solutions to overcome these problems, after reading this article i m surely motivated to give it serious try again. i have thought of having a fixed time to go off to sleep and wake up next morning, avoiding late night work i have also decided to allocate some of my time to do the work i actually enjoy doing so that life is no longer monotonous and most important i'll concentrate on quality time i devote to curriculum by concentraring only on the work i m doing at a certain point of time.
hope these steps will myself to put in best efforts to my work and be more calm and positive in life...

  59. Manish Gupta, GE Healthcare (Materials & Supply chain Planning), TAPMI, Batch 15

Starting such discussion needs lot of courage & definitely a strong/genuine urge for a better life, this one of the act of your's can change many.

As per me we are responsible for our own growth & management, not our organizations.

I believe we are like Computers- means we have hardware & software.Hardware is Body & software is your thinking pattern & your reactive way.
As other computer programs your coding can be also touched/changed/deleted/updated.

I did one program through Landmark Education & My life got transformed after that.

Another important aspect : Knowing do not make any difference but doing make difference.
Do Plan but unless you act on your plan it will not make any changes.

Life has no colors, it is empty & Meaningless, whatever color you will give it will take.Whatever meaning you will give your life will take, be it happiness, sadness or whatever.

Now coming back to questions of Prof :

    1.Where I am-

Mostly the things are settled & I know what are my short term goals & working on long term goals.
    On Energy management questions :
    Body -1 check,
    Emotions -1 Check,
    Mind-1 Check,
    Sprit -3 check.

    2.What I want to become-
A healthy & responsible citizen, a caring & responsible Father & Husband, A good mentor/coach, Being coach able /Open, Head one vertical of business for short term, Head one organization in long term.

3.My short comings in Energy Management: More or less it is ok, but need to take it to the next level now by putting the right structure in place & I need to be more disciplined now on my plans as they have slipped gradually in due course of time.

    4.My Plans:

Body-I will restart Sudharshan Kriya 2~3 days a week.
Emotions: I will start listening music again & will find out time for this activity.
Mind- I will start writing again for Creativity.
Sprit – This Area need lot of my attention. I will start mentoring & coaching others. Have already opted for the change of role. Reading, surfing net & research are getting slipped as there is no structure there.

  60. Hello everyone....
I am Vishal Vyas...a student of KIAMS B-11... After reading this article i felt as if it was solely written for me....i waste my time and energy like anything....right from my school days this has been my problem...i have always faced difficulties in setting my priorities...and then just regrets and regrets...But i think after reading this article things will go other way round (at least i hope so)...To be very honest, according to me, the most difficult task in life is to change ourselves...but then, may be this time i will succeed.
    Answeres:
    1. At this point in time I am trying to figure out things which I actually want of my life...I am trying to get away from my wrong habits such as procrastinating things, excessive thinking etc. I have realized the importance of these two years of my life and I am sure i will utilize them in the best possible way. I need to make substantial changes in my lifestyle so as to have a better future...and i know i can do it.
    2. My mother has been my source of inspiration...and she has always said that it is more important to be a good human being than anything else. So this is what i wish to become- a good human being. On the professional front i want to see my self working for the betterment of a progressive organisation through my quality efforts and in the long term i wish to become a CEO of an organisation. I also wish to be a professional playback singer as it will go along with my corporate goals.
    3. Shortcomings in energy management
When i joined this campus my weight was 51 kg and now it has come down to 44 kg. I miss my breakfast several times (specially when there is no class at 8 AM) and therefore i do not take a healthy diet. Other than this, its not that I am not energetic, but the thing is that i am not using my energy for right work at a right time, as i have said earlier i have this bad habit of procrastinating important tasks. This is one area i have to work very hard to overcome. And the common error- i do not take enough sleep at night and as a result of which i feel drowsy in the class and miss many of the important concepts.
    4. In order to overcome the above mentioned problems- i will try and not allow my mind to distract from the task in hand and will focus on the next task only after completing the previous activity. The concept of ‘ultradian sprints’ has impressed me a lot. Through this approach i will be able to complete important tasks on time and will get rid of the procrastinating problem. I will take enough sleep in night so that i wakeup fresh in the morning and concentrate in class in a better way. I will also, from now onwards, allocate my energy according to the importance of the task. The more important activity will get more portion of energy. Above all, it is most important to overcome my mind, i will take all the possible steps towards it.

  61. Hi, I am Ankush Kapil from KIAMS.
    INTRO:
Reading is not something that I enjoy doing and there are very few articles or books that could bind me to follow 90-120 principle else I would have taken at least 3 breaks while reading an article of this length but for a change I completed this article with one break. The reason for this might be time constraint, or I might have enjoyed reading it (but going by the spirit thing in the article I feel I enjoyed it and it was worth reading. HOPING that above paragraph fetch me extra 1 or .5 mark , now I would like to answer the questions asked and here they follow…….
    > 1. Tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
If we follow the Gantt chart principle then I am lagging behind as I always wanted to be the part of employed population @ the age of 22 but am still in formal education (studying) and would continue till the age of 25. But the good part of it is that I realized that there are many more things to be learnt.
And regarding life I am still trying to figure out the “one thing” that I love doing & that could earn me living the way I wanted. And I am also trying to figure out whether to opt for finance, marketing or operations.

    > 2. Tell what you want to become
Ever since I saw a film named SIMON BIRCH (the name may be misspelt or it might have a complete different name); I always used to think of the question that was confronted to a disabled kid in that movie which was “if everybody/everything in this universe has a purpose then what was the purpose of my existence”
And the above question “Tell what you want to become” reminded me of two things:
    • The same question above(movie related), and
    • Why MBA (which we as MBA aspirants prepared and spoke in almost every interview we gave) which was half a truth.

Now after the short introduction about the question (hopefully) I would like to start,
Well I want to be like Steve Wanner (in terms of his professional life) or Mathew Lang or Jean Luc(mentioning their name just to make you guys aware that I read the post) with more energy than they had (energy mgmt.)

    > 3. What are your shortcomings in energy management
Shortcomings of energy mgmt. that I feel lacked are:
    • Body: I require a lot energy mgmt. to be done because a few actions mentioned in the article were missing from my daily routine while others were in abundance (making me think of the mismatch). And the 90-120 principle mentioned was something I strictly followed but with a little twist i.e. I reduced the time between the working hrs and made it 45-60.
    • Emotions: flight or fight definitely existed.
    • Mind: distraction is a major problem, ultradian sprints was absent. And I always tried to prioritize work (though at last moments)
    • Spirit: if it speaks that u must enjoy what you do or u must have an clear idea of what you want to be remembered as, then I think that I m not that focused till date and need a couple of more self introspection sessions.

    >4.how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article
    • Reschedule my daily routine and would try to follow that strictly, allowing exercise, breakfast to get in and cutting down on time that I spend on sleeping and resting.
    • Try to find out what triggers emotion fluctuations, reverse lens is something I follow when I have to give advice to others but not in my case, long lens & wide lens is something I had to learn.
    • Ultradian sprint is something I follow but I had to learn how to follow the set rules/schedule after prioritizing the work.
    • I would try to dissect the work that I enjoy doing and try to find & build my core competency based on its result + like I mentioned about the movie I am still trying to figure out “the purpose of my existence on this planet earth”.

  62. Hi all this is Ashish Mehta from KIAMS. The article gave me a new perspective of looking at self management. I always knew that energy is more important than time as with high energy level u will automatically work faster. But the new thing i learnt is that this energy has 4 deciding factors- body, mind, emotions and spirit. Thus it has given me certain criteria on which i should check myself regularly.

Where i m in my life?

Though life is not easy, it is interesting right now. I get to do so many things and learn a lot these days not only in academic terms but otherwise too, though i believe i can get much more if i try a little harder.

    What i want to become?

This is the question i'm trying to anwer from almost 2 months but have never settled on any answer. Actually i just want to be happy and keep others happy with what i do in my life, but i just can't decide a realistic goal which will serve the purpose.

    My Shortcomings in energy management

Sleep and diet(barring breakfast) are not problems for me. I get a good sleep and eat well, i just have to make a habit of having breakfast regularly. I am considerably strong at the first three fronts- body, mind and emotions. I just need to work on the 4th part i.e. spirit. When u don't know where u r heading to and why, u don't have the pace. This sense of direction is completely missing in my energy management.

    How will i overcome this?

I've made a target that in 15 days i will decide what i really want to do in my life, both in short and long term. I will do this by analysing myself and the world outside and decide where do i fit in. It will give me a clear goal to work on and i will get back the pace which i m missing currently
    Thanks

  63. Hi Everyone,
I am Manish from KIAMS (B-11)
I would like to start by thanking you Sir for sharing such an inspiring and motivating article on energy management with us. Such an article, telling us ways to lead life could not have come at better time than this when we all are on path of either identifying our goals or are striving hard to achieve the determined goals. I was really going through a tough phase trying to know “where and how” exactly I want to go. Getting up late in the morning and sleeping late night with no major contribution to self-worth is the life I am living. Managing life is becoming difficult for me even though I generally try adopting planned and systematise mode of acting. Going through the article I came to realise that together with managing limited time one also needs to manage more important his/her energy well. This article had answer to most of my queries regarding my professional as well as personal life; it helped me in knowing where I was going wrong. I have extracted inputs from the article and will trying adopting them in my real life.
Now the answers to the questions~
    1. Where I am in terms of Life: - To be honest, I am just living life mechanically, trying to learn something new from the experiences either in classroom, compulsory sports session or through prospecting for PRAGATI but still unclear about my goal. The short terms goals related to college assignments and tasks are not allowing me to concentrate on broader perspective. I am looking for a guiding force which will help me in determining my path and make me realise of my true potential.
    2. What I want to Achieve: - Professionally, I would like to achieve something that I don’t know now which should make me & my parents proud of. And on personal note I have hidden desire to do something for my native place. Achieving mental satisfaction with whatever I do always remains my top priority, I try aiming at perfection in whatever I do and in the process mismanage time as well as my energy.
    3. Shortcomings:- The funniest part is that I know some of aspect where I am getting wrong but am not able to correct them, its lack of motivation and mine wrong attitude perhaps. I am not able to do what I want to do, get deviated and indulge myself in worthless activities like surfing public sites and playing game etc. What I am lacking most now is perhaps the mental peace which I rarely get owing to my mind preoccupied with stuffs not necessary. I get disturbed by immediate crisis and thinks about issues for which nothing can be done.
    4. Ways to overcome:- After reading the article I came to know about importance of division of Energy centres and hence have framed out means to take care of my mind, body, soul and emotions.
    A) Prepare a schedule of day-2 day activity daily and try abiding by it and executing it well, have buffer hour for emergencies.
    B) Sleep latest by 1am and Wake up at around 7am. (Feasible owing to campus being closed at 11pm only) I have also decided to take atleast 2-3 round of ground during evening sports session for the reason well known to my friends.
    C) Figure out different energy centres and invest time and energy as per its worth to career and personal goal.
    D) And above all will decide as quick as possible what I want to do with the life god has given me
so that I could have purpose for existence and then aim all short term goals towards this ultimate goal.
Great inspiration...!! Hope to see more such articles..!

  64. Hello friends
I am debabrata from KIAMS B11. After going though the article(which is worth reading) I tried to analyze where I stand in terms of energy management and to be truthful with myself I fell miserably in terms body, emotions, mind and spirit(not a good sign for me). I read the article a few time more to understand my miserable condition and according to me the main reason for my miserable condition is failed to manage my spirit. Let me put the points together ……
    1) What I do best and what I enjoy most
    2) Practicing my core value in my everyday behavior
I feel dissonance with myself which leads to turbulence in mind and emotions. But this not the only reason there other things which I need to work upon. I really need to work on my focus not only in term of how much focused I’m in a specific but in order to understand why I m choosing the task (not about those which are mandatory). I have always been vulnerable to emotions I can’t hide my emotions and this create a serious distraction in my life. In terms of body energy I gained a new lifestyle recently I feel most energetic from evening to midnight whereas in the morning I feel down. I had a habit of sleeping 11 to 6 but now things became upside down.
I think I have answered the third question first so let me go to the fist two questions-------- in terms of my previous expectation I may not standing as fully successful but I gained something maybe took the first step towards my dreams, at least I learned lot of things in KIAMS and still learning. To talk about my dreams I think it foolish to share it in this position but I given myself some timeline and I am working on that.
Now the most important question does this article will help me to overcome my problem. Even though that is a futuristic question but still there are some thoughts coming to me right now. First is building my capacity and changing food and drink habits I need to this ASAP. Secondly I need to prioritize in my work. But still I have doubts how I can achieve my main two problem, I may have to give some more thought to work out that.

  65. hello friends
this is jyothirmayee from KIAMS B 11
firstly i would thank sir for sending the article focussing on most important aspect where we neglect much..
i am at the very beginning of my learning stage, though i have done a four years of graduation i felt i didnot learn..the only thing was,i was not seeing the whole world, i limited myself.
I want to be seen myself as a person where i am successful in every aspect of my life, it may be a successful manager in the organisation, or a loving daughter to my parents...
the shortcomings i felt were i was doing the de-stressing activities intentionally and i didnot make them as a ritual.though i know that i need to take a deep breath if i get so stressed but could not do at the time i need to.
things learnt from the article are many. But i thought of focusing on seeing things with different lenses and practicing the energy management activities so as to make them part of my daily routine

  66. This article I think has come at the right time for many of us. Having got used to a sedentary life, its time people learnt how to face these demanding situations, and how to get the loads of pressure and stress off their backs.
ENERGY being the basic and the most important RESOURCE, as i would like to call it, is now a bleaker option, as people don’t have any more of it. The life styles have changed, the demands of the daily life have changed, but not our habits, not our way of looking at things or the way we live life.
This article here gives us the SOME of the good ways to rejuvenate, revive, and keep our energy levels going for the whole day, and how we could improve our lives.
Looking basically at the major requirements for energy, they are the body, emotions, spirit and mind (I have changed the order for a purpose).
    Physical Energy:
The fact that we need to take a break has been highlighted very well, and this can actually be applied to us in KIAMS, the between-class breaks, or the evenings can be used to take a walk and get out the real imaginative you, and rejuvenate yourself, and take time out for yourself.
    Emotional Energy:
The energy is drained a lot due to our emotions, and these emotions depend on the circumstances we face in our daily life. How we see these situations is the key to solving this issue, instead of thinking from your position, thinking about things from the other perspective does actually help in understanding and keeping our emotions under check, that’s what i usually do, but now I’ve learned that there could be a third view, or the wider view and that every circumstance is a learning for the future.
Emotional bonding among employees and colleagues and also with the BOSS helps the employee to feel emotionally attached with the organization, and any recognition he receives boosts his morale, and improves his productivity.
    Spirit:
“What you do best and what you enjoy most, it’s important to realize that these two things aren’t necessarily mutually inclusive. You may get lots of positive feedback about something you’re very good at but not truly enjoy it. Conversely, you can love doing something but have no gift for it, so that achieving success requires much more energy than it makes sense to invest.”
“Most people are living at such a furious pace that they rarely stop to ask themselves what they stand for and who they want to be. As a consequence, they let external demands dictate their actions.”

These were some of the eye openers for me. They have actually given me a new door to walk out through. I would like to try and understand and give in more energy where my interest lies, rather than sit back and do what I’m good at.

“By describing what they can’t stand, people unintentionally divulge what they stand for.”

And this last line friends, is I would say, the most relevant of all. What you see in others is but a reflection of oneself. And any dissimilarity you find, you would like to change that image to match yours. But the main question you need to ask yourself is, or else, the main aspect that i would like you to do is, look at it from the IMAGE’s perspective. That’s when you’ll realize, that by trying to change someone or telling them about their qualities, you are wasting energy. It would rather be better to ask yourself, are you right in those qualities? If not, better change and get yourself right first.
    The MIND:
I would say that the mind is the CRUX of all forms of energy for the human body. A proper control over the mind is the first thing that is required, either for physical health, emotional health, or for the level of the spirit.
It’s the focus of your mind which will give you a better health. Multi-tasking is good for a manager, but to an extent, and there are some issues which need to be attended to with a single mind, that is what is lacking now a days, a straying mind will required double the energy, cause you are thinking in two directions at the same time, so first get clear about what you are doing, and then attend to it, and try best not to get interrupted, until and unless it’s of utmost importance. Its better to draw a line of what is, and what is not important to you, or the order of priority.

Till today it was like, the spirit I had in the morning carried over till the day ends, I always did what I liked more than anything else, any amount of pressure on me to do something I dint like never yielded anything positive. And in today’s life, when I wish I could sit and think, JUST sit, while away a little time for MYSELF, or anything NEW/INNOVATIVE, it finally ends up in the mid of the night that I’m free, tired, I do a shabby bit of innovation, which in the morning I understand was nothing but crap.
And,”energy management”, I usually do a bit of it (but not SPECIFICALLY though), like I always take some time to react to a situation, don’t let emotions play so fast on me, this helps save a lot of energy.
Enjoy life, never miss a chance to laugh, it does rejuvenate you, your senses, you actually feel better.
This may sound a bit silly but, an ice-cream or a chocolate actually brightens you up, relieves a lot of stress for you.
And friends, the best way to keep your spirit high is “SMILE”, it does loads of good for you. Even in the worst of situations a smile is what can actually save you, your mind loses its tension, and you could actually get better ideas in the most demanding time.
Every mail/sms I send ends with this line: “SMILE...FOREVER...!” cause i feel that, maybe even ONE SMILE from the person reading the mail would actually make him happy, make him relax, and the best of all, make him feel better.

These things that I’ve written here might be a bit silly or trivial, but I do use them. Any comments or suggestions are kindly welcome.(forgive any mistakes though!)

    Smile...Forever...!!!
    Nish...

  67. Hi everyone, I am Mohd Imran from kiams, PGDM-1
After reading the article I can easily make out where I am standing right now and why I was getting so stressed out every time . I always thought that all things are done according to the time management. I never thought of how important energy management can be. Now I realise that even to manage time you require energy. At deep down in my mind I knew I was doing something wrong but now I can say it was not that I was doing something wrong ,it was actually I was doing it in a wrong manner. All the time I was consuming the energy but not thought of restoring it.
Currently I am at the stage of gaining knowledge from my surrounding be it my friends, senior or faculty. Focusing more on my own core subject. Trying to figure it out how theory will be fitted in practical life. Struggling to survive… My short term goal is that I want to possess maximum managerial skill and gain knowledge from a good reputed organization for at least 3 years , specially in the marketing sector. Regarding my long term goals I want be a successful entrepreneur . My short comings are lack of managing energy, keeping my mind stable and calm. My mind gets easily distracted by others . Now as I know all my loopholes I will try to fill them up by doing those activities at regular interval of time which will rejuvenate my energy. Plan out my work according to my energy level . Try to concentrate more on my work. It’s a pleasure to shares my ideas and views with students at Tapmi . Thanks a lot sir…..

  69. Hi, i'm Yoginder Yadav from KIAMS batch-11.

    Following are my answers:
    • I’m at a stage where I know what I want to be and the path that I should take is in front of me. I’m here at KIAMS completing the task given to me (may be not as beautifully as an artisan would craft or as elegantly as a painter would paint his/her thoughts or as fluently as a writer or a poet would write or as carefully as a mother would cradle her sleeping child or as intensely as a lover would love) and along with it building on my character which is a legacy passed on from generations to generations and also realizing my spiritual self. The spiritual journey which I embarked has taught me how to live a pure life but I need to implement these teachings in my everyday life.

    • I want to become a loving disciple, a good human being rather than just a human being. I do not wish to be someone important or big, I just want to be son of THE FATHER, disciple of THE MASTER. I just want to be one with THE ONE.

    • My energy management has been decent lately. A couple of months ago I was a little low on energy. Some of the reasons were – lack of enough sleep, home food, etc.
    • I have learnt to cope up with that by going back to bed early (since the 11 pm lights out rule came into function.) Diet balance has been one of my other latest fetishes that have helped cope up with lower energy levels. To build better levels of concentration, I want to wake up every morning at 6 30 and begin my day early with a work out. Also, I would like to increase the amount of time I currently spend on meditation. I want to be more engrossed in the thoughts of my master rather than the thoughts of other lowly things.

    • The answers to my shortcomings are within me, there’s just the lack of implementation of the knowledge. Knowledge should make a human being better himself at each and every stage of his life. Knowledge not implemented is knowledge wasted. This article nags one to implement such knowledge.

  70. hi everyone, i am sumit agarwal from kiams(b-11) first of all i thank nagendra sir for forwarding this article, after reading this article it forced me to think about the issue of energy management in my life coming to the answers 1- right now this a very important phase in my life as my current hard work and actions will decide my future i came here to achieve a purpose and that purpose is to learn and gain knowledge in order to get one step closer on what i want to become. 2- i want to become an entrepreneur in my life.this is not some thing which i thought after coming to the campus ,but this was the reason why i came here, enhancing my skills and knowledge is the soul purpose why iam here. 3-as for as energy management is concerned i am lagging behind. it never came to my mind that beside time management i need to focus on energy management as well.as far as sleep is concerned i am having 7-8 hrs sleep daily, but i often miss my break fast which is not good for my body.when we talk about mind, i follow the same practice as it was written in the article i.e taking small breaks during work and this i used to practice since my child hood. 4- over coming the shortcomings is not an easy thing to do .but i will try and put more focus on the 4 aspects in which i need to manage my energy. body-i will try and have more nutritious food in my diet and regular exercise. mind - organizing the work according to the level of priority the require and devoting my energy accordingly. managing emotions is not a problem for me. spirit- more and more introspection is needed to be done by me so that i could analyze that whether the things i do are aligned to my goals or not.

  71. hi friends,
this is sagar malhotra from batch 11,KIAMS.
it was a pleasure reading the article, and i tried to get myself into the article in order to get maximum out of it and i think i have used the article efficiently enough as far as theoretical understanding is concerned.
    now coming the questions..........
1.lots of the batch students would have answered differently now and if they had been asked to answer 6 months back(i mean before joining mba),perhaps they are able to understand wat they want out of their life, but i came here with deleting all my notions and just searching for learning and experience,so i think i m still in that experential learning phase in which sometimes i think i m doing well and sometimes scores low.and i think in next 3 months i m going to enter in the next phase of corporate life in which i have to start it carefully and with slow observations.
2.i wanted to become an expert in 1 and not jack of all trades,so if i get my wish,i will be a portfolio manager 5 down the line and then moving up in the hierarchy in a company where my advice and decisions would satisfy my goals and my organisational goals.
3.this is been a problem since i have started my mba,in home i had poper scheduling, and here i m not able to set a energy level required to do a particular task i.e,many times i induce extra energy which actually is not required for that job and as such i dont have other problem regarding this.
4.there are many things written in the article which i learnt for managing energy and i did not find exact solution to my problem but wat i m thinking of is, may be proper planning of work and organising the tasks will be helpful in solving my problem,so i will try and implement this solution for next couple of months.

  72. Hello Friends,
I am Prateek Ramchandani from KIAMS

The article was a right thing at a right time for me when I am trying to discover myself and experiencing a new phases of life. While reading articles I could relate many things with my life. Time management was a concern for me for a long time but it can be well managed through Energy management is definitely a new learning for me. Although I was unconsciously managing my energy in many ways but a structured way I could get from this article.

In terms of life I am at learning stage where apart from course curriculum I am also having experiential learning (Other than studies). I think as a human being you should be a good learner throughout your life, but in terms of my life I haven’t learnt a lot so there is a long way to go. While learning it’s a dreaming stage. As a new world (Professional and personal) is just about to explore I think it’s a stage where I have so many dreams and as dreams are new, the desire to achieve those heights is also high.

Well about where I want to be is still a question I am asking for many days with myself and still could not find a finite answer. If I make a goal path than a corporate career can be a professional goal but still the height or end where I want to be or the shape I want to give to my professional career has to be decided.

In terms of energy management my Emotions and mind score are right but Body and Spirit score is area of concern. My body score is high (4/4) but it does not effect on my energy level. (It may start effecting later and may not be sustained for a long time). Spirit area is really a shortcoming for me to overcome.

Work prioritization is the thing I can get from this article to overcome my shortcomings and manage energy. To manage spirit 3 category wise approaches to find things was a clear path to goal setting.

Well only realization is not the end of task over hare. Many times in a day or in life we get so many things and may get inspired… but activation is more important. Things like I will attend breakfast daily, will have 7 hr sleep, will do yoga jogging should be more on act than on paper. Things should go from realization to actual realization and should depict on our activities.

Multitasking is good or bed is still a question after this article and comments you all have posted. Well in my life I have been practicing multitasking for many years and was able enough to manage things. Multitasking can be effective if we take 2 tasks as a switching task. As energy management talks about breaks, intervals in work hours if we keep on shifting our focus from one activity to another it can really help us to work efficiently. For effective results we must draw a line till such extant we can go for multitasking. In terms of doing everything as multitask I also disagree.

    Regards,

    Prateek R

  74. Hi
This is Kshama Mehta from Kirloskar institute of advanced management studies, currently pursuing first year of PGDM.

This article brings very important fact in human life and that is energy management, till now I have read many articles about time management but this one is the first one regarding energy management and after reading this article I feel energy management is more important than time management as time management which may exhaust you at some point of time but energy management will keep you on totally active throughout the day. Earlier I used to practice yoga and also had a habit of waking up early in the morning at bramha muhurat that is at 3 am in the morning, which kept me active, But now it has become difficult for me to practice that. This articles also point about various things which I am also going thorough in my life like “ultradian rhythms”. I liked the techniques of buying time and the three lens technique suggested in the article are of great value. Now answering the four questions.

    1. Right now I am in the stage that demands efficient time management as I feel drained out very easily, being very emotionally sensitive it sometimes does affect my mood which has a very strong effect on my energy level. Apart from normal curriculum studies currently I am trying to gain as much knowledge as I can, and I think I am moderately successful in doing so but I think I can still do better.

    2. I want to be a perfectionist in all the spheres of life , I know it will take time, but I know I have it in me. In career terms, I want to excel in the field of Human Resource.

    3. As I said earlier I used to wake up at 3 in the morning and practice yoga, I have lived that life as mentioned in the article and also have experienced the benefits, but now due to my schedule ( like late night meetings regarding presentations and projects because of which I cannot sleep early and thereby my entire schedule goes hay wire as there is no fixed time of going to the bed and waking up, I don’t take minimum sleep of 7 hrs and as far as eating habits are concerned I don’t follow healthy food habits ) has come to a break. But now I need to re-continue with my original schedule and feel that same activeness and alertness again.

    4. I will try to keep my meeting for project and presentations before dinner time, then sleep early and wake up at the time of bramha muhurat, and again start pranayama which keeps me cool and protects me from stress and also do yoga religiously to keep myself fit.

  77. Hello friends..I am Harshit from KIAMS.
At first I really thought that it would be another read from a large literature already available in libraries about what you need to do. But the area where this article differentiates itself from all those crap literatures is that it actually tells us the methodology and real time practical inputs to do the right things in the right way.
    Now the Q/A part:
    1. A v. crucial phase of my life. The decisions I take, the hard work I put, the focus I apply at this stage will have huge repercussion in my future life. No point repeating that whatever I do now will decide the future quality of my life (in both respects: prof. n personal).
    2. I think the biggest advantage of coming to KIAMS has already been realised by my. The 7 months I’ve spent here have taught me the area where I want to see myself, i.e. marktg. I have previously enjoyed doing the stuff, but now I am crystal clear about this aspect of mine.
    3. A lot...I frequently skip breakfast, I don’t workout, I don’t take regular breaks during the day, I don’t take time at all for reflection, strategising or charting my future course of action.
    4. This is the most difficult que. to ans. becz it entails a promise to implement whatever we say here.
Things that I will implement straight away are: reverting to my previous hobby of writing which I have completely stopped after coming to KIAMS, giving 10-15 min daily to myself where I’ll like to be in complete solitude to make a mental note of what has happened in the day and what I want from the next day, month n so on.
Things I would like to do gradually (because these habits (bad) have been a part of me for a long time and any attempt to halt these abruptly would be counter-productive) include harmonising my wake- n-sleep pattern with the natural biological clock (I am a total nocturnal case, I feel at the peach of my energies after the sun sets in the west), i,e. sleeping and waking up at designated time slots, having regular breakfasts...
At last I would really like to thank sir for such an invigorating article
    Regards
    Harshit

  78. The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
I strongly believe in the above lines quoted by Robert Frost in “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”. I actually inspire me to stay alive and move ahead in life.
All my life I have considered myself to be a jack of all trades and master of none, who believes in generalization rather than specification, who is spiritual but rational and who feels that there does exist a guiding light to lead us to the doors of reality, the keys to which lie in the hands of the willing…I want to be the hand.
Coming back to the article, I believe it’s a wonderful attempt to understand oneself.
I had always been an active participator in all possible activities be it sports, music, taking German lessons or other extracurricular activities and not to be forgotten academics too. Believe me, getting involved in multitasks actually helps in conserving energy rather than wasting. Humans use only 10% of ability of brain because brain has other functions to perform as well. To me “Multitasking” does not mean, performing different tasks at the same time but performing different activities in well coordinated manner where one task actually energise you for the next task.
Somewhere on the horizon whenever sun sets, the impression which we have is of a glorious day coming to an end...I wish the same for my life...lets see what life has in store for me...the life is no regrets tour...I take every day as it comes...there is no point in allowing the situations dictate your life...
thats what I believe in.....so self exploration is still on and I am yet to decide where I should locate myself in terms of life.
Well..talking about what I aspire to achieve, eight years down the line I see myself as working for “ME”. For coming few years I wish to be a manager working for say a Biotech or a pharmaceutical firm. Desire is also to be a part of a philanthropic organization.
Peeping into myself, I think, I am actually digressing too much from my real motive and ambition. Life at Kirloskars is highly sedentary and I am entangling myself under its web.
So, it’s the high time I need to get up and try to rejuvenate myself before it actually gets too late. I think, working in Priority Order i.e." – setting goals and prioritizing our activities is more important than managing schedule.

  79. HI this is abhinav from kiams.
I started reading this article just for the sake of completing another assignment, but when I ended reading this article I found the answers of questions that were haunting my mind from last many days .everyone in this world is having a goal, a dream or may be an idea where he want to reach in his life but the path leads to that destination is not clear in everyone’s mind. Same is the case with me I know where I want to see myself but from where should I start or what should be the first step , the answers of these small but complicated questions I got after reading this article. Time management is an important thing as we always told but after going through this article I think that energy management is more important which altogether leads to time management.
    Answers to the questions
1 presently I m going through the time of my life which will decide my future , one year is left for MBA after that I’ll be working in some organization. But this one year will decide my entry level to the corporate world.
2 I See myself 10 years down the line (as I always dream of ) working in office(one of the best ) on my laptop, a cup of coffee on the table and a name plate on the door reading abhinav dadwal below this CXO.
3 Presently the drawback I m facing is that I m not able to prioritize my work so that I’ll be able to focus more energy on most important task.
4 I’ll try to follow ultradian sprint, focusing on one task first and after the completion of this, choosing the next one.
I’ll try to get healthy sleep and will try to wake up early in the morning for some exercise and surely for breakfast.
I’ll prioritize my work and will assign time to each task on the basis of respective importance.

  81. Hi
This is Ankita R Jalan from KIAMS....
After reading this article I have realised the importance of energy management and how I can improve my efficiency and productivity in various tasks I thank sir for showing us the right direction.
    1) I am fully satisfied with my life, but I always think that I can do much more than I am doing currently, I feel if I can give more time to my work and put some more efforts in whatever I do. There is always a lack of energy in my routine.
    2) Well my journey is very long. I have goals for myself which I work harder to achieve. One of the goals is that “I want to be successful in my life”. Everyone has their own definition of success, and I am not an exception to this. My definition of success is that being the BEST in whatever you are doing and willing to do. I can relate it to many things be it my personal life or professional life.
    3) I don’t get a sleep of 7 hours and don’t have my breakfast daily so I get tired early while doing a task. I am emotional and when I am unable to perform I get disheartened and become pessimistic and then don’t concentrate on the task in hand
    4) I will overcome by preparing a schedule for myself which I will strictly follow which will include 7-8 hrs of sleep and breakfast and some time for yoga and swimming to keep myself physically fit.

  82. hi friends, this is nitten sethi from kiams( b-11 batch)
this is,what i think about this article..
I don’t know it make sense or not, whatever i am writing but try to make it..
So at last, I come to conclusion after using most of the techniques given in this article....
I got some positive results and some negatives. Summary is like this-
    1) “The science of stamina has advanced to the point where individuals, teams, and whole organisations can, with some straightforward interventions, significantly increase their capacity to get things done” by Tony Schwartz...
How is it possible, by establishing simple rituals and behaviours?
I agree with the author point that if you apply some simple rituals like early to bed and early to rise, quit smoking and drinking will help a lot to improve efficiency but up to extent. By this you will get more energy from body, mind but not guaranteed from emotions and spirit (may be you feel more sleepy by thought that you get up early in the morning, it happens with me maybe it’s for some period).inhalation exercises for smokers may or may not work( i don’t have any experience)
As tony said that, they have anecdotal evidence about the success of these practices but question here is for how much time it would work effectively (in article they surveyed for 1 year)
    2) Core problem is limited time not energy???
This is the valid and good point and changes my thinking about, how to be effective and more efficient? When we learn to recognise what kinds of events trigger their negative emotions. we gain greater capacity to take control of their reactions, and then we started buying time.
    3) Ultradian rhythms and what you do best, and what you enjoy most with multi-tasking-
I experienced that when we do something, which we enjoy, Frequency of ultradian decreases. But in case of, what you do best or what you don’t like to do, frequency increases. So can we go for middle path to do both types of work simultaneously? (To make a trade-off but then the case of multitasking will arise) So what we have to do, to minimize the effects of multi tasking. This leads to distraction. Author said focus at one time on one particular task only, but do our culture and organisation environment permits us to do so (i don’t think so, anyways i request to dear tapmi students to comment on it, they would better know) another wise i will reveal my thoughts on my blogspot named by thinkonestepahead.blogspot.com about how to manage multi-tasking jobs effectively from my experience (not work experience, life experience) based on using hypnotism, spirituality etc.
    4) Negatives emotions leads to Fight or flight modes??
I agree with this by you can utilise this by practising lens exercises-a chaos can be changed into opportunity.
    5) Email checking two times in a day??
For me this is not valid point because i lose my 1 mark in professor Nagendra’s assignment. I didn’t check assignment mail send by professor at night and due to limited time for assignment; i was not able to do it well. So it doesn’t mean keep checking your mails every time but make it your leisure time activity and feel relax while checking mails. i feel like this while reading newspaper and mails. It’s to make myself relax (except assignment mails). It will give relaxation to your left side of your brain and right side (creativeness, art, etc.) will start work.
    6) Will spirit be created artificially..??
It’s not easy to say, yes, because i don’t have any proof but believe me or not you can.
    7) How renewal rooms will effect?
If i am a C.E.O of any company and take decision to provide renewal rooms for employees for their refreshment but they started using it habitually without any work load or pressure. So what will i do?
    8) Will these kinds of techniques make us addictive to use them consistently??
Now just think about it yourself.

  83. Hi
This is Ankit Choudhary from KIAMS B-11

    • My life is going on fine though I am far from my hometown n family but it’s a great learning experience where I have got out of my comfort zone and learnt new things .I know there are many opportunities for me to enhance my knowledge and skills so I m trying hard to grab them.
    • Well I have never thought seriously about my future I have 1 simple funda enjoy and utilise day in a way I want to but when I go back to bed n think about that day I should be satisfied with my acts and should not regret anything. Though I have realized the importance of goals in a person’s life and how you have to give priorities to various things to achieve them .I am trying to set a goal n hope will set 1 very soon which will reform or change my lifestyle.
    • Shortcomings
o I don’t get a sleep of 7 hours at a stretch so have a habit of taking small naps of an hour twice a day due to which a routine is not set.
o I am unable to concentrate for long time and take frequent breaks while doing an activity
o Most of the times I skip breakfast as I have a habit of getting ready for work just in time.
o Sometimes I get carried away by emotions I mean I get too excited and end up messing up simple and easy tasks.

    • Overcome
I will sleep early and have my breakfast and go to gym to keep myself physically fit. I will set up some short terms goals n give priorities to the tasks accordingly and prepare a schedule which will be followed strictly. I will try and change my habit of last minute rush.

  84. this is nitten sethi agian....
Now come back to assignment part-
Where i am right now in terms of life?
    1) I just started my life some couples of months before. Grabbing lots of things from all directions. Now i am more focused, determined and looking all around. I think this article will be a boon for me because from last some months, knowingly and unknowingly, I am trying to do the same things but base was not there. So now, hope so, i will implement in a better way.
Tell what you want to become?
    2) For me now it doesn’t mean to say that i want to be a C.E.O or chairman of the company. I just want to control myself and improve myself as possible. I know everything will come along with this. My thinking is if you are not able to manage yourself then how can you manage an organisation?
What are your shortcomings in energy management?
    3) Major shortcomings are implementation part and persistence to try it again and again. Some time it happens that you want to establish some rituals but face problems in starting and due to this you quit it.
How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article?
    4) a) Try to think,
    b) Think,
    c) Think to try,
    d) Try and try again and again (to establish rituals).

  86. Hii...
    I am Sreelekha from KIAMS..
At first i thought this article might be the same as some boring self-help stuff but its different, its interesting and simple..
as i went through the article i felt i knew many of these things but never was serious in following them. To be frank i never worked incessantly or to say studied more than 4 hours during my engineering or any time, but here I need to concentrate more, work for more hours so I felt that this article will help me and many of us to work efficiently. Here at KIAMS I used to feel that life has become a routine, something as being locked in a cage and most of the time I end up being frustrated. This was somewhat because of the stress I used to undergo but after some time I learnt to manage it and got over it. The problem with me was that I never was used to this.
Coming to where I am in life, here doing my PGDM I think I am laying a path, learning new things and many things, not only acads but things which are important to be happy, successful and content. I am learning to manage things, different people, mainly my emotions and my emotional stability. I want to make a difference in life and in the lifes of people around me too. I am laying a path for that achievement. Though I feel at times that I am not doing things the way I wish to do.
I am not exactly clear or have any precise position or designation of what I want to become but I have a clear idea of what I want to do, be a HR head of an organization, want to open a green cross and expand it to as many places as I can, this has been my all time wish and I am very determined about it, be a helping hand to an orphanage or if everything goes well and if I can, open one by myself, I want to have time for doing these things so don’t want to make myself too busy achieving heights in any organization , and for fulfilling these I have to be successful.
The main problems with me are my emotions. I feel am too emotional sometimes, which drains my energy. Since the time I remember I have been depending emotionally more on my friends, I get too attached to them and give them a lot of chance to hurt and disturb me. This also leads in losing my concentration. I sometimes feel low because of this place which is so closed to the outside world. I love reading books and novels and I don’t find much time for that here. I lose in keeping up with the stream of what’s going on around the world, which by my basic character is the thing I was least interested in earlier.
Laughing with friends, reading novels, making people laugh, smile or at least cheer them up gives me or to say anyone a lot of positive energy and good feeling. Finding joy in what one is doing decreases the energy drain and the exhaustive feeling. I believe in one thing “WHEN YOU CAN’T BREAK IT, JUST JOIN IT “, for me this decreases the stress and the frustrated feeling one gets when the work is not what one likes. When a thing which is to be done has to be done and is correct and good for me I take it as it comes. I sure have to work on the emotional stability thing, which I am trying to and will do for sure soon.
The major requirements of energy as mentioned for being effective and also happy and content come in an order of body, emotions, spirit and mind. Doing what you like to do and linking what you do makes a lot of difference in our life and the positive energy it fills in, though these both may not be the same all the time.
Having good diet and exercise for body fills in energy and helps rejuvenate. Emotions which play a major role in our life are ofcourse the ones to be managed well , helping others, I learned makes me feel good. Feeling emotionally attached and bonding with colleagues and others makes one feel secured and adds to the moral support.
Though, what one likes to do and what one is best at doing are often not the same, one can have a balance in this and avoid being depressed and stressed. Taking a break once in a while and not only during the study or work hours but also once in a month will help rejuvenate, when one feels that life has become routine. Liking, finding joy, having fun in little things in day to day routine will be a lot more helpful than any other exercise. I am trying t follow these and will do.
These are my ideas of being in good spirits and having positive energy, any mistakes in my ideas and beliefs, corrections are welcome and will be thankful.
And I am glad for getting this opportunity, of revealing these feelings which I never do.
    Sreelekha…

  87. Hi, I am sameer kidwai from Kirloskar institute of management.
thank you sir, this article was needed…. It has provided me a new insight to look at life as in I never thought that even energy can be managed and if done so your life becomes balanced. I can feel an in equilibrium through which I am going through, and I think this article will prove to be an aid and bring back the equilibrium in my life. I feel this article even in a way talks about “LIFE MANAGEMENT” which is also very much important looking into current scenario regarding work pressures.
I feel currently I am poorly managing my energy levels as I get stressed out easily which leads to being short tempered. Currently I am also doing an indepth study regarding carbon rating. I feel that if I manage myself and my resource ( ENERGY) well then things will go on pretty smoothly.
I want to join my brother’s NEWBOY toys in future and I want to take it to the new heights, I want to work towards newer ideas which I am working on currently to give a new dimension to my brother’s business. I want to compete with the top brass of the industry and make a name for family, my company and for myself.
There is not enough time allocated for sleep in my schedule and I don’t work out . my eating habits are not proper as in I don’t take balanced diet. i need to give more time regarding my research in the field of e-tailing.
I feel I need to manage my energy level I need to give up those activities which act as energy destroyer, I need to devote atleast 7 hrs for sleep, so that I remain calm for the entire day and thereby my anxiety will also be under control. I will have to take healthy eating habits.

  89. I am Jaiprakash Singhal student of KIAMS B-11.Reading this article was really fantastic experience to judge myself. In terms of life now I am standing at learning stage. This stage is very important for me. This stage will decide what will be future of myself. In this stage I have toughest challenges both physically & mentally or I can say it is turning point of my life.

For the future prospective I have a clear picture in my mind. I want to become a senior manager. I need 20-25 years experience of corporate life at higher management level. After that I want to become a professor. So that I can share my experience. Foe that I have already done lot of courses which will be continuously gone. My USP is 3L (learn, learn, & learn).

Regarding to energy management first of all body, I walk early in the morning & take walk & gym. It gives me lot of energy & relaxation. As per emotion I have control on work whatever type of work. I usually do it before the end time. I also manage time for myself, friends & family. But the negative aspect is that I can’t control frequently enough to express my appreciation to others. According to mind I have enough control, I can consternate fully & do not easily distracted. But I don’t have ability to focus on activities with longer term values. And finally spirit, I usually spend enough time at work doing what I do best & enjoy most. But many times my decisions are influenced by external demands.

After reading this article now I shall change myself. I shall focus on my weakness & work for them effectively. Now I shall more focus on long term value & manage my energy system so that I will achieve my goals of life.

  90. Hi everyone,
This is Dinesh kumar Guntha KIAMS-B11.
At the outset let me thank our Nagendra sir for giving us such a wonderful article which gave me a good insight into what my life is all about.
I feel that managing both energy and time in a balanced way is more important, because however efficient we are in managing our energy there is a constraint called TIME.
But the fact that we cannot do anything about the time and we can actually make some difference by effectively managing our energy is logical.
    Coming to answering the questions
    1. Where am I now in terms of life.
I would use the 4 categories in answering this question.
Body: I think i am good at managing my body with nutritious diet and adequate work out frequently.
Mind: I find it hard to focus on something until it is an emergency (writing this blog now is an example), but fact is that I do it even under some pressure.
Emotions: I think that I am not so good in managing my emotions because I am anxious may a time. I will be exited in times of success and depressed in times of failure, this is one area where I need to work more.
Spirit: I think I am OK in managing this because after keeping a written copy of ‘PERSONAL GOAL SETTING WORKSHEET’I am able to manage my priorities better and do what I am supposed to do.
    2. What I want to become.
‘India is not a poor country; it’s a country with poor people’.
I want to be a facilitator to help those poor people improve their standard of living. So, I want to start a microfinance company 10 years down the line. Simultaneously start a chain of schools which would educate most of the villagers in India (this is the second part of my goal).
    3. Shortcomings in energy management.
Few of the shortcomings in my energy management are (1) I do things in last minute which i think is not a positive sign. (2) I am anxious many times. (3) Inconsistency in doing things.
    4. How will I overcome these shortcomings?
I think meditation can help me in overcome my anxiety and going through my Personal Goal Setting Worksheet will (had been) help me in maintaining the consistency to work for my life’s goal.

  91. Hi friends!!!
This is Shashank Kulshrestha from KIAMS Batch -11.
If you read this article “Manage Energy not Time” then you are able to find out that managing energy is the right thing as compare to time. If you save your energy, you can work effectively and efficiently then automatically your time would be saved. Now I am going to post my views according to the question asked.
    1. I feel presently that I need more energy management because currently it’s lacking in my life. Currently I am on the second stage of plan, which I decided at the graduation level for achieving my goal. Basically my plan consist 4 stages and in that 4 stages, I completed the one efficiently. But this is the right time for giving my 100% effort which is essential for the success of the 2nd stage of my plan. And I require to manage the energy in such a way that I am able to work effectively and efficiently.
    2. I want to become an entrepreneur, this is my long term goal and also firstly I want to become a good and responsible person. I want to get the top position in all respect.
    3. There are so many shortcomings in my energy management:-As in human body energy comes from main four wellsprings and these are

    a. Body:-
    (i) As I don’t take a proper sleep usually I slept only 5-6 hours, laziness is increasing day by day and I also feel tired most of the time.
(ii) I frequently skip breakfast, that’s why not getting proper nutrition which body requires.
(iii) I don’t do the exercise even I don’t go for a walk that’s why my weight is increasing and I feel lazy most of the time.
    b. Emotions:-
    (I) I am an emotional person and I don’t have enough time for my family and loved ones, so sometime I feel irritate.
(II) I have too little time for the activities that I most deeply enjoyed like solving puzzle and Sudoku, and watching movies.
    c. Mind:-
    (i) I am really distracted from my goal during these days, I m not able to concentrate on my mind on a particular objective.
(ii) I spend much of my day on the others activities which I don’t like but I don’t know how it happens.
    d. Spirit:-
    (i) I don’t invest enough time and energy towards my goal.
(ii) As I am an emotional person my decision are more often influenced by other people.

    4. I will overcome come these shortcomings by taking the following decisions:-
As body required proper time at least 7 hrs to sleep, I will try to take sleep for 7 hrs with the proper time. I will do breakfast daily and get all the nutrition which body requires. I will do exercise so that my body remains fit.
I will try to get up early in the morning and do yoga and meditation which help me to increase concentration. I will also prepare a sheet (chart) which contains my daily objective and I will do work according to that.
I clarify and set my priorities and accompanying rituals in three categories: doing what I do best and enjoy most at work; consciously allocating time and energy to the areas of my life-work, family , health, service to others- I deem most important ; and living my core values in my daily behavior.

  92. Hi My name is Shyam Prasad Shenoy. I am from TAPMI-CEE, Batch 15.

'Manage Your Energy, Not Your Time' was really a interesting piece of reading for the people who spend most of their time in office & who are deprived from Social Life. On reading this article, I recalled the story by Robin Sharma -'The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari'. This story by Robin Sharma too focusses on the restless work life lead by people, giving no space for personal thing & entertainment. The Rituals that are specified in this article is more or less is matching with that of Robin Sharma's story.

1.Where you are now (in terms of life): I am leading my life according to my pre planned motives & dreams. Had a dream of getting into organisation upon my graduation & then to continue higher studies. Accordingly I am steppling towards my dream. Currently I am working as a Tax & Accounting Executive at a CA Firm from the past 2 years. Over these 2 years I have made all attepmpts to gain as much as knowledge as possible which are required for this profession & even I succeded in my strategy.

2.Tell What you want to become: My only aim & desire is to get employed in the Finance Department of a MNC. That is the reason why I started my career in CA Firm.
Apart from the above, I want to be a good & responsible citizen of our Country & the great son of my parents.
I am the great believer of Spitituality. "Dharmo Rakshathi Rakshitaha" - Bhagavadgita. I do believe in my Dharma. I do all of my works taking it as my Dharma & not as my Karma.

3.What are your short comings in Energy Management?

Frequent travelling makes me to get tired very soon. Hence I avoid to travel. I prefer to work in one sitting place. I have great amount of patience.
With respect ot my work, I often get diverted from One work to another very soon. This is because of pressure from my superiors. Many a time a tried to concentrate only on one work at a time; but it never worked with me. I get fatigue very soon. This is due to fat content of my body.

4.How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article:

On reading the article I have noticed that, taking break from the work place for few minutes & then doing some kind of physical excercise will help one to manage his energy efficiently. Even I have great inclination to go for jym & other such physical excercise, so as to keep ourself health. But the life in Banglaroe made me to get away from my dreams. I prepare cook for myself. But I am feeling that this is not giving me enough strength as when it was cooked by my mom. My mom is leaving far from me. So, I am hoping once she is back with me, I can build a regular body excercise.

As for as Mind & Emotion is concerned, I am far better of than of my physical energy. I spend some of my time in meditation. Every day two times a day I chant "Gayatri Mantra". This practice gave me a great solace. Further, I am a Flute Artist. Whenever my emotions & minds are not with me, I will take my instrument & start playing it. This God gift has showered me with great mental & emotional energy. Further, after reading the book "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari", I started to inculcate more rituals as to laughing, appreciating others, listening to others, getting up early in the morning etc.

Once again I would like to reiterate that, this article is well meant for executives who spend their day & night in the work place, neglecting their health, family & social life. This article will definately change the way of leading ones life at work place.

  93. Hi, this is Pooja Soni from KIAMS, first year student (B-11).
The article ‘Manage your Energy….’ was eye-opener and forced me to analyze the quality of my daily life. Truly said I am leading very lazy life without any seriousness in the life. I just do that things whatever come to my way. No serious thoughts on what I am doing and why I am doing. I just like to do whatever comes to my mind. I think I am very immature as compare to other people of my age.
After reading this article I really come to know that what is lacking in my day to day life and what is the importance of energy management and time management both. This article tells about how one can manage their energy, who doesn’t have time for family and other important work in the life. But what about people like me, who have lots of time and energy, both but do waste them like anything. I think people like me should learn first time management.
After reading this article I am gradually learning how to manage myself. It is very important to manage your physical energy, quality of energy, focus of energy and energy of meaning and purpose. All of them are lacking in my life right now. But from past few months I am trying to overcome of this weakness.
Right now my score as per the table given in this article is,
    Body: 3/4
    Emotions: 2/4
    Mind: 4/4
    Spirit: 3/4
This shows a full-fledged energy management crisis.
Now let’s come to answers of the questions.
    1. Where you are now (in terms of life)?
I am in the learning stage of my life. I have no experience of most of the things in the life. Before joining PGDM program whatever I thought about life that all proved wrong because I could not thought beyond certain limit. And then I come to know that there are so many things in the life about which I have never thought before.
    2. What you want to become?
I want to become an entrepreneur after few years in my professional life. Actually I have my own idea regarding my future business. (But, I don’t know how much it is worthy. Sir, after you took our first class, in which you talked about great people and their creative ideas, I always have a doubt that how would we come to know that our idea or decision is right or wrong?) Till then I want to work as a manager. In a later stage I want to start an NGO. Till then also I will work with some NGO. In fact I have worked with two NGOs in past. But still I have some confusion regarding my short term goals.
Apart from my professional life, I have so many things to do like,
    - To learn Violin
    - To do part time Photography
    - To held an exhibition of my glass paintings
    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management?
My shortcomings are in every four stage of energy management.
    - In body part, I am physically very weak. I am not used to do exercise in my daily routine. Even my schedule foe sleep is also not organized.
    - In Emotions, I have very little time to do the things that I really enjoy. I generally don’t express my feelings of appreciation to others and always think about what people will think about me.
    - In mind part, I have difficulty in focusing my mind in one activity at one time and lack of concentration.
I am not used to spare time for creative or abstract thinking, which is very necessary.
    - In spirit part, there is big gap between what I wanted to do and what I actually do. There is lack of meaning and purpose in activities that I mostly do.
    4. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article?
Firstly I will start to schedule my day as per the priorities of the activities. I will decide my sleeping hours and hours for daily exercise. I will take care of thing that I always appreciate people whenever I feel. I will also do one thing at a time and will try to improve my concentration and everyday will spare half an hour solely for creative thinking on any one topic that I like. I will more focus on my goals in the life.
So, that’s all. And Thank you so much Sir to make us think on this part of our life and to throw light on aspect of ‘energy management’.

  94. Hi everyone...I am Neha Singla, A first year student of kiams.
Firstly, I want to thank sir for sharing this article, as I think most of us are in the need of it.
Sometimes, you know your loopholes but you need someone to encourage you or to revise up your stuff. Thanks a lot sir for this. As now i am realizing that many of the good habits which were in me earlier, is on the verge of deteriorating from my life. And maybe this is the reason, that I don’t feel much into myself.

    Now coming to the questions
    1) tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
According to me, I am at that stage of my life where I should learn as much as I can practically as well as theoretically. Though I always believe learning is a continuous process which should be carried throughout the life. But this is a time when one should grasp as much as he or she can.

    2) tell what you want to become
I have always seen myself doing good in HR,,,ie leading a successful carrier in field of HR but my purpose of life doesn’t end here,, I just want to contribute in NGOs by some means or Ending up doing something for orphan age.

3)what are your shortcomings in energy management
what I realized is that maximum of my shortcomings are towards mind and spirit side.
The thing which I hate most about myself is that I get distracted very easily.
And second thing is I don’t spend enough time at work doing what I do best and enjoy most.
And the last thing which i want to mention is I spend much of my day reacting to immediate crises and demands rather than focusing on activities with longer-term value and high leverage.

4).how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article
Firstly i would like to work maximum on my distraction part, as half of my problem will be solved if i will overcome this..I will try my level best to be aloof When i am doing something important and something which matters a lot to me..i will keep my phone on silent mode etc and will try to involve myself the max what i will
    be doing.
And lastly the practice of prioritizing the things which i used to do earlier,i will try to inculcate this habit in me once again.
    Hope i will overcome them.
    G0d bless

  95. Hi.....
I am Shashank Shekhar from KIAMS Batch 11

Firstly , I would like to thanks all of you for giving great views on the article and thus motivating me to read it.
I love reading whether it be books, periodicals, articles anything but I took this article as an assignment and as usual (in my case), I left it to be read only when the deadline for submission comes (that was a mistake which I made as it was an enlightening article). I am completely mesmerized by the views which are given in the article, they are so genuine that I could relate myself to most of the examples. I felt after reading the article that most of the things were known to me but I never took it seriously. Now I believe that I have new energy to practice the ideas.
I especially liked the concept of ‘three lenses’ i.e. reverse lens, long lens and wide lens as it helps a person to get more positive attitude towards life. To be very frank for the last few months i have been doing the same thing and it has really helped me in changing my outlook towards any situation whether it is good or bad.
I believe that right now I am in that period of my life where I have to change my outlook towards life and bring some seriousness in it (which I am trying for the last couple of years). But I have self belief that I can do it. Right now, I believe that I am on the right track to achieve my goal. In the longer run I want to be an entrepreneur and for that one need to have confidence, knowledge and experience which I believe to get in next couple of years. For that I want to join the corporate world after completing my MBA and gain some experience and understanding of how work is being done in the corporate world.
After reading the article, I found out that I am heading for energy crisis. Whether be it in terms of body, mind, emotions, or spirit. I need to bring about drastic change in all aspects if i want to avoid this situation. I was trying for the last few months to change my routine but was not successful whether it be regular workout, daily breakfast etc. Since childhood we knew that ‘early to bed and early to rise’ is a nice habit, but we never followed it. Now we need to properly organise our habits so that in the longer run our body, mind, emotions all be in control.
In order to overcome these problems, I will gradually try to change my habits. E.g. I will try to do proper work out and meditation which will be beneficial for my mind and body. Sleeping timing and wake up timing needs a change. proper care of diets need to be taken .This can’t be done in one day we need to do it gradually.
    Thanks

  96. Warm Wishes !!

This is Nishtha from Kirloskar's. Following is what i felt after reading-"Manage your energy, Not your time"......

The moment you realize what you need most, God is there to help you. Since long, precisely last two months I was looking for reasons of my incapabilities in achieving my targets. Though not completely but got a fair idea from this article and to my surprise reasons are – poorly managed ‘Spirit’ and the significant deficit in managing ‘Mind’. It was an eye opener and now I know where I have to work to achieve my dreams.

As far as where I am in life at the moment is to be answered, I would say point of inflection came a year back and still not a winner but in no way a loser. Have lived different shades of life and I really feel blessed for the same. Miles to go to achieve my desired goals and to say the least badly need energy management. Have a simple aim – want to be a Country Head - HR of any fortune 500 company, in less than ten years by stepping ladder of GM, AVP or VP and during the period will plan for next bet. The read has made me realized that more than anything else at this hour I need a fine blend of controlled thought process which would come with effective meditation and increase in assimilation power which would come with quality reading.

Last but not the least -- my hearty thanks to Nagendra Sir for his initiative to bring change in everyone's life he come across.

    Have a energy managed life!!

  98. Are you Headed for an Energy Crisis?
Yes & I scored 5 which is Reasonable Energy Management Skills – though I know where I stand, there are enough reasons to learn as to why certain people are at top & still scaling up. Those on the Top are the ones who took the first step in their lives when others were still thinking. They are Go-Getters in all aspects of life and do not shy away from doing or learning from peers or sub-ordinates, even sometimes from their children. This article could be looked at as one other inspiring/aspiring one but as long as we inculcate in our daily lives. Am not sure whether I would be able to follow all the guidelines immediately but am sure on one thing that I would take my first step.

    1. tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
My name is Vivek Nayak (TAPMI). With 12 years of experience in hand, I moved out of my last assignment as Operations Manager in an Internet Industry. My Eight years in the last company, led me not only to be a victim of all shortcomings in life but also gave several scopes to learn the curve. Currently at home for last 3 months, taking care of every part of the house – right from dressing up my kid to helping myself at kitchen.

    2. tell what you want to become
My last 3 months, have taught enough in life as to how people react when you are not on job – right from Mother to Mother-in-law. Touch wood, God has blessed me with a most understanding wife who stands by me. During our last dinner, I was narrating her about our STAM class cases & about our Prof(not to miss) – I understood from her face that she wants to be part of such sessions. About my daily management, she feels I need a Mentor who can tell me where I stand and how I can take my life forward. So I am on the lookout for a Mentor, in order to search for what I am destined. My search for new job has not stopped, nor ruled out from being an entrepreneur. I love taking risk and have series of examples in my life. I have not stopped exploring.

    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management
My Short Comings are Body & Spirit. My wife is a Fitness freak and started driving me crazy when I mentioned about Prof’s advice on Fitness Regime in our last class.

    4. how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article
Body – Am planning to join Yoga centre before this week ends and join a health club when I take up the next assignment(nothing in hand). Yoga is my first step.

Spirit – Though time spent with my kid has tremendously increased, am not sure that I would follow it when I take my new job. But as of now, have taken the first step on this.

Would definitely keep you all posted on the progresses made on the above commitments.

  99. Hi all,
I am Abymon Mathew, 1st yr student of KIAMS.
We generally introspect about what all is happening in our life when either things are completely out of control or when somebody else have told us to do so. In our case it’s the latter but at atleast it solves the purpose. By doing this we will know more about our self , I mean we all have come across situation when somebody else have told us about our self...like what we like most or dislike most, how we will react to a situation or whether we will be able to do a particular thing or not and we say ..Why dint I knew about this? Though we feel good that there are people around who know and understand us so well but this implicitly means we don’t spend the time and care required for us. It’s rightly said, one can love others only if he know how to love himself.
Coming to the question answer part…
    1) Where am I now in term of life…?
I am at a stage where I am figuring it out more about myself. I try to do things which I like but have never done before like spending more time alone, reading books and doing regular exercise etc. I am also trying to grow spiritually by daily spending time reading Bible and Praying. I am also trying to improve some of my skills.
    2) What I want to become…
Professionally, I am ready to work in any field which suits my profile and I am making myself more (According to sir) ‘EMPLOYABLE’. In my personal life I want to be a good (if not perfect) Son, brother, Friend, Citizen etc. by understanding and fulfilling my responsibility.
    3) What are my shortcomings in energy management…?
I am facing problems in prioritizing my activities. I generally do things at the last movement even though it is an important thing. I wait till important things become urgent. I don’t plan things ahead ( though I am working on it ) and spend my energy either in things which is not required or on things which need not require my full energy like checking mails or chatting.
I am able to spend time on various activities I wanted to but I am not able to completely focus i.e. not able to spend quality time.
I waste lot of time and energy on things over which I don’t have any control

    4) How will I overcome my shortcomings by what I have learned from the article…?
Be more accountable and take the whole responsibility for whatever that happens in my life instead of blaming others. In this way I can maintain my positive emotion and be in control.
I will try to do 1 thing at a time. I may not be able to do 10 things but whatever I do I get more satisfaction and enjoy it.

  100. Namaskar. I am Tushar Wadekar from KIAMS B11. My loved ones called me "TUSHI". and some of my friends called me "JIGGI and KIDZEE".

As every student who is confused about what he would do after the 10th standard, I too was confused. I wouldn’t say I was pushed into science, but there was this entire atmosphere that made me believe I was cut out for it, based on my marks and the opportunities that science provided. There used to be a very common word called ‘scope’. After I completed two years of science, I did not see any ‘scope’ in pursuing a B.Sc. and so I chose engineering. Then somewhere I realised that it was good, but not what I wanted to do. That’s when I played around with building business ideas for the future and it was then that management occurred to me.
I don’t want to continue working under other people and someone else’s system for a long time as my long term goal is to head an organisation, but I plan to work in the industry for a while to get exposure and to know how it functions. After joining KIAMS, all the obfuscated doors about my business ideas opened up and I saw new avenues where I could channelize my energies.
For me, taking risks is one of the parameters for success. 50 years down the line I don’t want to regret the fact that I didn’t try. Simultaneously I know – My dream for my career...I knew I had to reach a point where I and my skills could be recognised.
Now it’s time to answer some of facts which speculates where I am now in terms of my life...
Tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
So many times i had a dream that i am standing on an endless ground with no one around. And that’s make me feel sad. Whenever i had this dream, my confidence gets shattered. Everything seems to be losing from my hands. And this is what the reason i like to be surrounded with my Love once. I was just learned to overcome this but this made me think that i am dependent on them, and here evolves the TUSHAR... I really like to think more. I always want my image as transparent, harmless, and caring with smart and intelligent person. Out of these i always like to improve the depth of being smart and intelligent. I am really poor in general knowledge, as i just adapted reading as a hobby. I think this is a valuable stage of my life, which will be having a deep impact in my life. At this point i had figured out all the path of interest fields. But truly speaking i am lagging in taking decision even after so many efforts. Want to restructure my thought about life.
    2. Tell what you want to become
I want to be a techno commercial person, willing to deal in technology transactions around the globe. By this view i had joined Management institute. This is a very broad view i have. Till today’s date i am unable to narrow it down. I just know that i want India to be a technically sound country. I am still working on this arena.
    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management?
I think i am very energetic person as soon as it comes to my interest. I can sacrifice everything for my interest. From my childhood i am doing most of the crucial Yoga aasan. Till date i am doing some of those. It is really speaking will give you internal strength. Especially ‘Pranayam’ and ‘Shishaasan’ is very energetic.
    4. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article
I really get more irritation when things not go according the way i think. But the ray of hope i always had is my two friends. I think recently i had one more friend in this list. But on this New Year evening i came to decision that to become happy first believe in you because no one is here for you as permanent. And that is the day in my life i got new horizon... I had observed from this article that you should find out the way you can get internal satisfaction. For me i found that whenever i am with my friends it gave me kind of internal stability. I would like to contact them on regular interval. As these are some of special assets in my life.
You can do anything if you have enthusiasm. Enthusiasm is the yeast that makes your hopes rise to the stars. With it, there is accomplishment. Without it there are only alibis.

  101. Let me take the privilege of the process and actions I have undergone before writing all this.
I understood in the STAM class on Sat Jan 24th that we have to finish this “Task” by Wed, Jan 28th and I promised myself that I will be completing it much earlier and will be among first 10 writers. Then came the real truth and challenges in terms or “Urgent and Important” demands from work, wife, son and parents. Sometimes it was grocery shopping or keeping my 3 year old busy so that someone gets to see a TV show, sometime it was taking all to national park for picnic, sometime it was filling my timesheet before deadline and finding out who has not filled it in my team, to attending that important meeting with my manager or, meeting with my new team or, meeting with new manager of my old team etc, etc.. Now I ended up with 8 pm on 28th Jan and not even looked at pdf file. Then I thought, I am smart therefore I will not read the article but glance through few other blog comments to finish my “story” quickly. But poor Rahul, this ethics stuff in his head is getting strengthened by an ethics course too and he ended up reading the entire article.
Now the truthful answers to the questions
Where I am in terms of life – Somehow juggling my time with wife, one three year old son and an okay paying job. I wanted to finish my home loan before I reach 35 but will be delayed by 6 more months. Also wanted to learn Kannada and a musical instrument before 30 but it has taken a backseat now. Wanted to become a manager of managers by 35 but will be delayed (I do not know how long). Wanted to start delegating my mundane tasks at work which, I managed to accomplish. Wanted to make my wife understand that there are other better things than complaining about friends and relations. I am happy that I spend “quality” time with my son and feedback from my team members are very positive.
What I want to become – Next 15 years, I see myself leading a strategy team defining the strategic plans for an org which has about 5000 people. I am not writing this because this is a STAM class but I have seen good plans at work which has optimized our teams. The things which, I thought two years ago very very difficult to achieve are bearing fruits now. I should have enough money and cash flow so that I do not work after I reach 50. My son and me should not be independent by the time I turn 60 and then I want to start a free for all playschool/kindergarten.
Shortcomings in energy management – Less workout, frequent distractions and starting with energy and loosing focus midway. No breathing techniques.
How will I overcome these – Pranayam, the three Lenses, Focus on one task till it completes, Discover what I do and enjoy most, Devote time and energy for what is important to you.

Still a long way to go which is clear from the last 4 short lines ( I am getting distracted by messages from my car mate to start for home). I also switched to take two calls and read three mails while writing above.
At last, thanks prof for making us read the good article.

  102. Hi,
This is Priyanka Minocha from KIAMS batch -11

I think the article has come at the right time because these days I was struggling a lot to capture all my flaws and work upon them. I have always felt that there comes a time when I will have to stand alone and I must feel confident enough within myself to follow my own dreams, i must be capable of changing and rearranging my priorities so that my final goal can be achieved, and for that sometimes, familiarity and comfort need to be challenged. I have to be strong enough to at least try to make my life better,be confident enough that I won't settle for a compromise just to get by and appreciate myself by allowing the opportunities to grow, develop, and find true sense of purpose in this life and lead the way.

In terms of life I would say that I am at the verge of learning .Presently I feel I am in that phase where I have got 2 yerars to learn all the practical aspects of my life .I am away from my parents who have nurtured me for 20 long years and now I am alone and trying to survive by my own and competing with all the hardships in order to make myself rigid and adapt according to the circumstances. I am at a stage where I aspired to be some time back but at that point of time I didn’t knew that MBA is not only about scoring marks but it is all about the practicality of life.An era of learning phase has come to me when I see my library and google world and seeing this I understand I have to cover milestones.Looking at this in terms of the article I feel I have always known my weakness and strengths and where do I lag in terms of body ,emotions ,mind and spirit.

This is a question that I suppose is related to my desire ,heart, my life. I have big dreams as my parents say and I actually need to accomplish them in order to make myself satisfied .My short term dream or goal or vision is to be a successful business professional,(in terms of wealth and fame).I won't say that I need to be a good individual or socialite because my values will always remain with me.In my long term life I want to be an IAS officer because I want to serve the community in a way I think will be the best .I want to apply all the ideas that I have as a tribute to my country. This is because I want that people should know me and my parents for my achievements.

I know what all I have to do .My vision is very clear because I have already done this kind of exercise earlier and I give sometime everyday to evaluate my schedule ,my learnings,my achievementss and my loss .But the biggest problem is that I don’t apply all my so called made strategies regularly in life on a daily basis, maybe because I don’t possess that strong will to apply them or because of my laziness .The biggest problem is I am not able my maintain my physical health because of late waking up habits.Secondly while studying I am not able to concentrate for a longer period of time even if I follow a balanced schedule.I am not able to sustain things in my mind for a longer period of time.

As far as practical application of this article is concerned I will again give it a try but my problems were I am not able to exercise in the morning because I am not able to wake up early in the morning but this article does not provide me a solution of getting up early in the morning or developing a strong will. But I know these qualities come from within and a desire to do better and I have the desire to accomplish my dreams. This article has provided me with a platform to rethink about my life ,my strengths and I make a promise with myself that I will adopt a proper and regular exercise, planned diet , studying hours and utilise my time and resources to the fullest because i have to reach my destination.
    Thanks sir
    regards

  104. Hi All, I am Girish from Batch 15. I work for GE as Six sigma Black Belt.

First of all I would like to thank Nagendra for sharing this article. And I don’t want to comment on anybody’s write up here. The basic reason is everybody is different in his or her experience, maturity level. Probably if somebody asked me 7 years back when I was in college my opinion could have been different. While going through the article somewhere in the back of mind all my 6 years corporate days was trying correlate to it. Most of the point I agree for it. For example multi tasking, I am very weak in multitasking. I cannot do two things at a time; forcibly if I do my productivity will be down. I have some take away from the case or example mentioned in article to improve my productivity. Further one sentence of Krishna flashed in my mind. Krishna tells to Arjuna in Srimad Bhagavat Gita, “Be moderate in eating, sleeping relaxing and working. That is real Yoga”. My final opinion is, this article elaborate this one sentence by giving several corporate example.
    About questions,
Q1 If I look back into my professional life, being a Gold medalist in Engineering, my aim was to achieve something in engineering field. But GE culture influenced me to shift (better word is paradigm shift) in my goals. I started concentrating more on six sigma, quality etc… these kind of virtual world. Fortunately or unfortunately (Still in a confusion mode) I have been given a big responsibility of black belt in addition to my regular engineering activity and these fields are completely new for me and away from academics. In addition to this my EMBA classes, assignments, exams etc…Consequence of this is extra effort; ;-) stretch more and more and more. Resultant of this is lack of sleep, less family interactions, away from friends. So my short-term goal would be keep rolling all the responsibilities, and of course don’t have to say it’s possible only through time/energy management.
Q2 - On second question, 10 years down the line I want to entrepreneur. And the area on which I wanted to move will be my engineering field. The quality, MBA will give some of the contributions.
Q3 – It’s implied by my routine, right now, I am not a good energy manager... I am a way behind on my physical energy. I tried to improve it but did not continue. The only positive hope is, I am strong on my mental energy. I tend to get physically exhausted very early... this might be due to my food habit as well or due to my long journey hours.... to office or to the class.
Q4 – As learnt my short term strategy would be first to build up my physical energy... pick up the age-old rituals (which I used to do some years back) like surya namaskara and some of the Yoga habits. I thank our ancestors who gave us these powerful rituals, which build the physical and mental strength. They made this as a ritual knowing the importance of it in our lives but generation after generation we lost the importance why it's been done. As the age old saying goes slow and steady wins the race, with these rituals in place my physical energy should pick up. Once I establish it then my focus would be on long term strategy to achieve my dream.

  105. Hi to everyone, I am Akhilesh from TAPMI

To get the gist of it, I personally think it has more relevance to manage our own energies AND time, than in any other times. And I do have reasons to support myself. I must say that the clock wont be adding another hour and make it 25 hours in a day. No, That will simply not happen. And we all know that the overall energy in the universe always remains constant [A basic law of science]. So how do we go about it? My answer would be – Manage [that becomes more important since we are managers]. We have the constraints set for ourselves [in time and energy] and the best we can do is to manage them effectively.

I start by analyzing myself and how I score on managing the core constraints [I must say I am scoring pretty badly as a lot of people complain to me that I don’t spend quality time with them these days].

    Where I am now?

Well, in this universe obviously. Jokes apart but when we start to answer this question, it comes as a blow and a smash in our face. Simply because we have not been doing what we are supposed to do and inefficiently utilizing our energies. If I were to analyze myself as a critic – I score badly. Most of it would come from the job for sure. Reason? Well I like the challenge of fixing things up when they get broke and that led me to take up the venue of strategic planning and development of IT infrastructure. In short, its dealing with machines and more machines and even more machines. And as they say, A machine is built to be broken. So it takes a whole lot of time and energy of mine, to construct and again de construct these machines. So its all a mess over here

    What I want to become?

Yes, there are a lot of roles I need to play [apart from living my life out of these machines]. I have to concentrate on other aspects of life, like family and friends and studies and yes, my overall development as a good human being too. And to sum it all, I would have to prioritize them to be able to divest my time and energies to accomplish each task. This would be my supreme motive. No I do not belong to those schools of thought which say I want to become a successful man. But I wish to say that – Thou shalt manage the time and energies well and thus maketh a complete man.

    What are my shortcomings?

Hmm, that’s a tough one. If I were to be my own critic, I must say that I am still learning to prioritize things. And I am in the nascent stage for such a development. This is my biggest shortcoming. I feel that its because of this shortcoming, my other roles are incomplete in certain aspects. And yes, this is my biggest challenge too !!! Reason? Well, this is the simple fact which makes a person too much organized or completely unorganized. Hence the need to balance it in every aspect arises.

How do I plan to overcome these shortcomings?

I feel that the body mind and soul, each have their own listings of priorities. Just like the body needs to be cleansed and cured, so does the soul. And in accordance with them, the mind also needs food for thought. No I don’t belong to any spiritual sect or some thing. But yes, I do agree that each part has its own list of priorities which need to be attended to, well in time. You cant forego hunger as it will make you physically weak. I do plan to learn the art of aligning myself with the natural energies. Yes in this regard, I must say Reiki has helped me a lot. It has helped me to build the required concentration I need to incorporate certain tasks. I plan to jump start the routine of concentration and Reiki, which I believe would help me overcome my shortcomings.

  108. Hi, I am Srinivaschary from TAPMI Batch 15.

I work as a technical consultant for infrastructure solutions for customers of DELL.

I have always been a firm non-believer in self development essays/ books. I really feel one cannot develop or redevelop himself by reading a self developing essay or book. I feel it because one needs lots of resolution and will power to implement what he only reads for a simple reason its extremely difficult to change long developed habits.

I really feel, the book can only motivate you or point a direction which one needs to walk, but will never impact to such an extent that you would change overnight.

Now coming to this article, it did tickle my mind to ponder over the direction my life was heading. I don’t know, if I would change anything about it though. For a simple reason, I dont have time and energy to experiment.
I have always believed humans are like parasites, we exist at a particular apple only till its juicy enough for him to survive. The juice is gone, its time to move on. And every human being is either at a juicy apple or looking for one. The faster and better you are, you get the better apple. In being such agile and good, one needs to be full of energy and hunger.
Sometimes it is extremely easy to be full of energy and yet devoid of hunger. These are the people who suffer the most like “men without vision”

If I look at my life, I have always believed “ if you have a dream, pursue it with full josh, and plan your life around your dreams”. There is no reason why you won’t achieve it.
Again, its always glass half full or half empty. The way you look at it. I have put forward my views, and they are open for debate and discussion.

On the questions asked by prof. Nagendra:

    1) Where I am ( right now in my life)

I am a very hungry parasite and I love my apples. Currently, I am at a very beautiful horizon full of energy, full of vision. Everything I do has a motive behind, and a goal ahead. I have a clear vision on who I want to be and how I wish to achieve them.

    2) What I wish to become:
The goal is on the line of “ when I retire, I will not regret what I am and how I did it” . I would want to believe, this is how far one would want to go and then there is no better way of doing it than mine.

    3) My Short comings:
As every one has mentioned, physical and to an extent emotional agility would be the key hurdles to overcome. There could be times when I would feel, a little bit more and it could have been better. That’s a feeling I wish to negate.

    4) How do I overcome them:
Its easier said or written than done. But I wish to train myself to believe in my instincts for emotional feelings, and ensure a healthier and a better lifestyle for physical agility.

Again, as I have said earlier, its easier written than done, I would wish to seek super motivation to continue to tread the path and keep believing in my goal.

  110. Hello Everyone..!

I am Varun Goyal. I work with RSA Security, security division of EMC Corporation. (For non geeks, I am into software and information security products :D ). I am currently pursuing my E-PGDM at TAPMI.

Personally I found the article to be a very well written article. I like to read these sorts of articles which compel you to think about yourself. I have read some novels and articles which are very good self motivators and helps one discover themselves, but this article is different from the rest. So let’s get to the score card straight away:

    Body: 2/4
    Emotions:2/4
Mind: 4/4 (At work, I am known for my lightning email responses :D )
    Spirit: 3/4

I personally do not agree to some of the points in the article. Let’s say my manager reads this article and decides to lock himself in a conf room to complete a important work. In the mean time I send him an email asking for some sort of approval. So till I get a response from him, my team won’t be able to proceed. In this case I would say the switch over time of my manger is very well justified. But again it depends on person to person.

So here we go with the questions:

    1. Tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
To be very true, I know what I want in life. But at this juncture, I am not sure how do I reach where I want to be. I see lot of ways which would help me in realizing my dreams but most of them are camouflaged. I am not afraid of taking risks, but the time now is to take a very well calculated and evaluated risk because I cannot afford to fail. I don’t want to see my dreams crash as a house made of pack of cards.

    2. Tell what you want to become

At professional front, I see my self as an entrepreneur of a consulting firm which would specialize in Mergers and Acquisitions and also help organization setting up new companies in developing markets. I would also like to work for organizations like Mckinsey and Gartner.
I also want to develop my hobby and get into professional counseling and teaching. I think I will do a good job, may be some day I would like to spend some time guiding teenagers and professionals who are the future.
At personal front, I want to be an integral part of an organization which helps in bringing smiles, giving education and above all put life in kids who have not been as lucky as all of us. Also I want to actively work for a greener environment. Adarsh, lets talk about this over a cup of coffee?

    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management

Lots of them. I would say it’s strike 1,2 and 3 at the same time. If I have to pick the worst among the lot, then I would pick “concentration” and “emotional strength”. I easily get distracted and some or the other thing creeps into my mind which shifts my focus. About the emotional stuff, its little bit different from what has been mentioned in the article. Never the less, its for sure my weakness.

    4. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article

To start off, I will start going for a walk after lunch. Then I will also try to do some concentration exercises every day. Above all I will try to get at least 6 hours of sleep everyday. I am still working on how to shield my self from the emotional weakness stuff.

    Cheers
    Varun

  111. Hi,
I am Alifya Loharchalwala and am in the first year of Kirloskar Institute Of Advanced Management Studies.
Reading this article is a reiteration of how important energy management is and only following a healthy lifestyle would keep us energised.
I am at a stage in life where I have a deep desire to conquer the world. I intend to become an entrepreneur (working on a few ideas) and not very keen on working in an organisation for too long.
Energy management is a tool which if learnt well would allow us to manage our lives well, but the trick is in implementing it.
If I overcome the habit of doing unorganised work and start making my life organised in all areas I would be able to achieve my goals (personal as well professional) of life. In order to make my life more organised, i have started tracking how i spend my time, its a good way to realise the fact that it is not the time which is less but the utilisation of time which is less. :-)

  112. Hello All,
A special HI to all KIAMS friends, U guys really rock...Thrz so mch to learn from u guys.
OK,this is Khalid here from Tapmi-Batch 15. Working for Cranes Software Int Ltd for last 4 years, currently in the role of Business Analyst.
Also a a Self Proclaimed NAWAB (Originally from lucknow so…:)) though lost my kingdom 8 yrs back when this ZALIM ZAMANA pushed me out of lucknow to match the footstep of Mr Arora’s, Mr Ranjan’s , Mr Khan’s …(a long list) son. "IT" was the most buzzing word and I blindly followed the herd. So by now you have got it right, I became an Engineer not by choice rather by chance. I grew up dreaming of thrashing Waqar Younis all over the ground ,begging me for mercy…But Alas, chemistry and biology got me clean bowled before I could realize the dream...As an IT engineer i started with the obvious ritual- CODING(hated to the core). Then Testing happened and finally a yr back my questioning and analytical ability got me into the role of Business Analyst where thank god, i found some solace at last.In short in last one decade have hardly done few stuffs which actually inspired me or were within the circumference of my interests.

I wonder if I ever met Mr Tony Schwartz in real coz this article is so much about me…I would rather call it "The way Khalid should manage his energy and not his time”
I am at a very important junction of life as I have spend a major portion of life doing stuffs of little interest so now want indulge into activities which keeps me focused, satisfied, and yes should be beneficial from monetary aspect as well.
A decade ago I lead a very content balanced life, today at 27 I really have to struggle hard to claim that I was the captain of my soccer team once upon a time, no points for guessing…not many are ready to buy this theory :(
Today I successfully push things for tomorrow and also happily crib bout the past but frankly have done little to change myself.
Hmmm...for the future i really don’t have a name for the role that I wana play, but certainly it need to be a super set of my current role. Something to do with meeting new people, traveling new places(love meeting new people and try new cuisines), making proposals, meeting clients, getting leads, chalking put business strategies etc.
The article have really made me think hard... forced me to introspect…it is like "MR Khalid its gonna be now or never"…
I really never bothered to find out the meaning and purpose of my work, which MR Tony calls a potential Source Of Energy…so now from tomorrow will try my best to minimize any energy dissemination. Also will make it a point to add more value to my work and do more justice to the current role. In addition to this, also i am promising myself today (and not tomorrow) at 10:41pm a new set of flat abs which currently are on the way to become Flab abs :) and yes also need to get back to Pranayama(guys believe me it does wonders).
B4 i close a special thanks to Sir, for this opportunity.
Me logging off to wash my sports shoe which over the years have lost its colour :)U guys take care, sleep tight
    Keep Smiling...Khalid

  113. the article is insightful and forced one to introspect on the quality of our daily routine .i realised that managing our energy is very important for us to excel in our lives. this article has thrown light on an aspect which has been neglected till now. thank you sir for sending us this article. And making us aware of the importance of energy management. I don’t have any control over my emotions and this is due to lack of energy and this article surely proved to be an eye opener for me...
    coming to the questions:

1.where are you in terms of life
I am still at a learning stage of my life. I have lots of improvements need to be made in me.

2.what do you want to become in your life:
i want to be a confident girl who can influence anybody. I want to have a successful career in HR and want to do my job with perfection.

    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management:
i get distracted very easily.Sometimes i feel irritated and impatient.i get surrounded by negative emotions.also i m very lazy and often prefer being alone and doing nothing.

    4. how will you overcome these from what you learnt from the article:
i learnt that i will focus on one activity at a time.otherwise mind gets distracted in different directions and hence performance is lowered down.
secondly,i will take breaks in between my work.
i will take proper diet and sleep for atleast 7-8 hours .i will wake up early so as to remain fresh for the whole day.

  114. Hi,
    I,m Rohit Singh of B-11 @ KIAMS
    1. In terms of life I think I’m in one of the most important phases of my life. The time that I’m spending here is going to be a very important factor in my career. I can say that I ,m on the path which takes me towards my goal in life.
    2. I’ve asked this question to myself so many times but I didn’t get any convincing answer but one thing is sure that after working for aprox. 5 years in corporate world (can be less than I’m anticipating depending upon my learning ) I have a plan to start my own firm (there are few plans in my mind)
    3. I think there are lot of shortcomings like (BODY) going late to bed resulting in feeling sleepy whole day and could not concentrate (mind).I think of finishing work in time but still it gets completed at the last moment . I waste lot of time checking mails and i get distracted with things very easily which results in not finishing the work in time because of not scheduling my activities.
    4. To overcome these I will start puja that is path of 108 names Durga that I used to do when I was preparing for CAT and it helped me a lot in concentration and always kept my mind fresh. I will start sleeping early so that i can have at least 7 hrs sleep. I wil start prioritising my work .

  115. Hi Every One. I am Raj Prasun from Tapmi Batch 15.I am currently working with Hewlett Packard Consumer Strategic Center since past 3 years.
Its nice to see so many of yours responses.Interesting to read the changes it brought in some of us in terms of attitude and personality.Just to add to this one should also try to maintain and sustain such positive energy as we human have tendency to loose the focus on the next very hour or day. Frankly speaking I should have priorities reading this wonderful article and posted long back but yes i failed to manage my energy and so last to meet the deadline. After reading this article the very first thing that came to my mind is about my "MOM's Words which she used to say always even today " Manage your Energy and Time, list your priorities, do yoga, specialy pranayam. Even today at the age of 60's my mom never misses Pranayam and Morning walk to keep herself fit and her days goes well better than me.So for me most of the lines in this article are not new as I keep hearing every day from my Spirutual Guru ie. "My MOM" since my childhood. Still at this age due to busy life I am unable to follow all these tips specially managing my energy. To some extent I would concentrate on making my priority list and try to achieve them but due to distractions i get diverted and loose focus. I really support author's view that doing the same task after getting diverted takes 25% more times to finish, I have personally felt that.

Q1) Tell me where you are now (in terms of life)? After completing class 10th I left home to pursue Class 12th and Graduation in other cities Finally now working thousand miles away from home like most of you.Leading my life alone away from home and family have made me independent and enhanced my thinking process and maturity level. Every stages of my life which i went through was very challenging and new learning phase.Right now I am leading well planned journey of my life with some ups and down. By God Grace I am slowly able to achieve my short terms goals related to my career which are interlinked with long term ones, which I have planned few years back.Hope I maintain my focus.

Q2)Tell what you want to become? I would like to join and lead my father's Small Business after he retires in few years. After completing graduation , I decided to join HP and hence so far I am learning how big organization works to achieve its growth. Before I join my dad's business I would like to gain lot of different experiences in every field which will prepare me to face new challenges coming while expanding the business in his absence. Also my education will help me in making strategic decision , leading to growth path. Finally my dream is to lead his business to a stage where he always wanted to i.e. NO 1 among his competitors.

Q3). What are your shortcomings in energy management? I cant concentrate on one thing and get distracted by external forces. Also get tensed easily when some thing goes wrong and that lead to sometime wrong decisions. Also I have the nature of doing important work using Just in Time concept, which some times lead me to danger zones.

Q4)How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article? The very first positive step i took after reading this article is Stressing on Prioritizing my work . Writing down list of important work schedules on white board on my work station that need to be completed during office hours. not only in office, I will be try to bring such practice in my daily routine life. Another practice which i want to follow in order maintain my focus on any work is the concept of "ultradian sprints.” Trust me people in just one single day these steps brought a great amount of relief during my work hours as I completed some of the most important stuffs of the day on time and went home without any delay. Energy Management is really worth to practice regularly as it brings lots of positive changes in ones life. Best example I can give is not of any CEO but its my "My MOM".
Prof.Nagendra I really appreciate your way of teaching and it really helping us in exploring some of the hidden treasure.

  116. Hello everyone.....I am Amitesh doing first year of MBA at KIAMS.
Going through this article was a really enriching experience for me particularly because I as an individual had started giving up on the fact that I’ll ever be able to organize my life and bring some degree of orderliness into it.I used to feel at times that this wretched problem of mine is my USP but after going through this article and the comments of the other members, what has dawned upon me is that nobody has that perfect “dream life” where everything goes as per plan and where some amount of thought is there behind every action.
It was interesting to note that the people at the highest echelons of their respective professions face this crisis of energy management and it is a part & parcel of everyday life irrespective of what stage of life you’re in and what position you’ve achieved.

My life as a student of a residential MBA program could best be described as chaotic because I always get this feeling that I have to prioritise my time according to the need of the hour, which never really happens. I also sense an urgent need to finetune my thought process and devote this vast reservoir of god gifted mental energy into more productive activities rather than going on thinking about things that make no sense to me or my immediate surroundings. Channeling of this energy in the right direction is what I’ve always aspired to do with a very low success rate.
I feel that at this point of time, I’m at a stage in my life where I’ve been given a last chance for battling it out for survival and redemption. I feel that I’m at a point of no return, where you either go further or remain stagnant.
What I want to become can be termed as the overambitious zeal of an unfettered mind.Inspite of the low opinion I have of myself and the way I lead my life, I have this strong intuition that if I just take some effort and set things right, I can reach the milestone that I’ve set for myself, slowly but steadily. My professional aspirations are to gain as much knowledge as possible in my chosen areas of interest and be a person who’s not just wanted but demanded for a certain job. I know all this might sound like wishful thinking but again that’s the way I think.
The biggest crisis that I face in my life is a strong will & determination to do something.I feel that if I’m able to motivate myself for every job that I come across, things will be much better and my energy will automatically be utilized in the right direction. The only way I can convert my troughs (occurrence of which is very very frequent) into crests is by telling myself that there’s something to be gained from every small thing that we do in life. It’s a continuous process which never culminates and we have to find a meaning and sense of purpose in this which will eventually lead to contentment, fulfilment and of course success.

  117. Hello, this is Mousumi Pal. I am in the first year at Kirloskar Institute of advance Management Studies, Batch-11.

1.Where am I in life at present?
At present I am at a stage of life where, on a regular basis I am learning new things both on educational front as well as personal front. I am learning to look into the practical aspect of any thing or situation after I have grasped the theoretical aspect of the same thing. By learning on personal front I meant that I have felt a lot of change of change in myself as compared to what I was a year ago. I have learned to work in a group while working on any project, I have learned to face the audience while presentations. So all these have improved my confidence level, my patience, etc. But still there are a lot of other things in life that I need to learn as I move ahead in life.

2.What I want to become in life?
On professional front I would say that as every ambitious MBA student I too dream of joining an MNC as a HR manager. In this regard my long term goal is to start my own NGO after I have spent some quality time working as a HR person in some corporate body or a NGO or both. On personal front I would say that I would like to become an ideal citizen of my country as I love my country from the bottom of my heart and I would like to do something productive for my country. That can be providing an helping hand to the needy people of our country or by trying to make our surroundings a better place to live in. At the same time I would not ignore any of my existing and future relations with my parents, brother, relatives, friends, etc. In other words, I would like to maintain a balanced life.

3.What are my shortcomings in the energy management?
To my amazement my shortcomings have actually increased after I have joined this MBA institute. I get distracted very easily here although knowing the fact that this is one of those ways that would help me achieve those that I have always dreamt of. The inner driving factor that I have always possessed within me, is slowly decreasing and I am not sure how to make it right. I am a painter (do oil paintings) but now I don’t feel the urge to sketch even. I have always been a self-motivator, but now that doesn’t work for me. And to be very frank sir, I don’t know the answers to these questions. These whys and hows keep worrying me.

4.How will you overcome them that you have learnt from this article.
I will definitely try to work on the distraction part. I have taken up reading recently and I will force myself to continue with that. And recently I have started to visit the gym also as exercising keeps mind and fresh and that may help my above problems. And the same time I would try to cut down my time that I spend on gtalk (from 2hrs to half an hour).

  119. Hi,This is LUCKY.
1.Now a days, i am not feeling happy with this management life. Earlier i was ready to accept every challenge but now i have totally changed. I don’t have interest in most of the things. I know this is the important stage of my life but still i am confused. I think i made a mistake by joining kiams.
2.I don’t have interest to do any job in corporate world. I want to be a civil executive officer at my place or i ll run my own business .
3.I frequently skip breakfast, or i settle for something that is not nutritious. I have difficulty focusing on one thing at a time. Especially in study...I have too little time for the activities that i most deeply enjoy...i don’t spend enough time at work ,doing what i do best and enjoy most.
    4. To overcome above problems i am trying to manage time. Managing my sleeping time with my work so that i will get early in the morning and have breakfast. I am trying to concentrate on my work and managing time so that i will do my best and can enjoy what i want.

  120. Hi I am Vineet from TAPMI Batch 15. I work for McAfee.

Definitely a nice motivating article to read after a long time. However, I feel the bigger problem is choice? Choice which we make because of our own greed. If we manager our greed properly probably we can manage everything else. I am not at all surprised to see almost everyone felt they are in the same boat. Doing part time MBA it is stressing out. So it’s quite natural we are not balancing Work, Home and MBA properly. And all of us are stretching out. On the top of it from the school days we have habit of JIT. Just see no. of blogs updates today dead line for assignment. That it self indicate how well we are managing out energy  including me. Coming back to the question which I raised about greed or desire to get more and more in life. We want to move ahead and beat competition internal and external and that’s why we stress out. Then the question is it worth doing?

This reminds me about another assignment we had on the book – “The Monk Who Sold his Ferrari”. Similar concerns and concepts were raised there. Has any thing changed after that it’s been 8 months now. Probably No. This article at least made me to think again? Is it worth reading and implementing any thing from this article? Or am I just bogging because its one of the assignment. I think you can solve this puzzle by prioritizing your responsibilities in life. If you can prioritize properly then you can manage your time and energy properly. For example, the execs in the article took decision to spend quality time with family actually prioritized their responsibilities. I too went through similar phase when I had my first kid. I have to start spending more time with family and this was a conscious choice I made. So I believe if you can introspect your self and your needs than you can manage both time and energy well. Comments are welcome these are just my thoughts or my experience of life so far. We all should keep evaluating what’s more important in life for long term and invest in it.

Coming back to some of the brilliant questions raised by Prof. I am at management level at profession. I have seen a bit of the industry and process. Based on the kind of work I do I thought it makes sense to opt for MBA which intern means I am willing to try something new in my carrier. Rewards comes only with Risk. Off course I believe I have passion and energy to do that. I wanted to start my own business. That’s always been my dreams that one of the reason to join this program. Off course lacks both confidence and energy to do so. Prof. definitely motivates me a lot. In terms of energy shortcoming I always find shortage of time to do my work and shortage of energy specially after joining MBA. I have to prioritize lots of works in office and home but I love it. It always provides me opportunity to innovate new process to manage time and energy efficiently. One fundamental change I want to do and have been trying is to start day early it definitely helps in managing the work through out the day. I have failed couple of time let me try that again. Sometimes its just a decision you need to take and stick to it by making conscious efforts.

  123. Hello everyone,
I’m Amrita Sinha from Kirloskar Institute,Harihar. First of all I’d like to thank Nagendra Sir for the article. It was truly a eyeopener. It provided a completely new perspective of looking at life and helped us learn to manage the foundation of all the other tasks – that’s ENERGY.
These days I’m in the phase of setting the path towards my dreams. Don’t get me wrong. Don’t think that I’m setting the path by doing MBA so as to earn lots of money. My dreams are different. They don’t consist of money, recognition, power etc. if I sum up then they revolve around only two things……………”TO LOVE AND BE LOVED”………
All of us must have read on posters that either make your work your hobby or make your hobby your work. And it’s also said that one should always do the thing he/she is best at.
That’s what I want to do. I want to love……………and hence I’m here, to learn management. Now you must be trying to link management with love. Right? I want to do this so that after I pass out from here I may be able to open an NGO and run it efficiently with the acquired skills. I want to help people……….not by giving them alms……so as to kill their self-respect forever. I want to become a social entrepreneur so as to help them realise the potential they have, and explore it further. I want to write on issues concerning the society like empowerment of women, problems of children, poverty and above all on child molestation. Another very special dream is that I want to make people realise the importance of their aged parents, I want to do seminars, write articles, books whatever possible so as to make people feel that parents are not commodities, which are thrown out of our lives after expiry date. If I’d be unsuccessful in this then I plan to open old age homes in places where they are not available like towns of Bihar, UP, MP Jharkhand etc. I want to realise my father’s dream of visiting Kashmir, my mother’s dream of owning a sparkling, dazzling diamond not the contaminated ones, and to remain the loving sister forever. The last but not the least is that “I want to marry” and that too as soon as possible. And I want to become the BESTEST wife ever and an even better mother.
The places where I lack in energy management is that I don’t manage time well. I am not able to reduce my sleeping hours. Additionally my concentration is very poor. So, I end up doing tasks in more time than needed. I also waste time on things where I can avoid.
I think I’ll have to learn time management well and to develop a better concentration.
    Thanks and love.

  124. I might be the 1st person to read this article but still the last person to blog even if I had prepared my blog yesterday.

Before reading this article the first thing that came to my mind were the words of my director @ TIME Pvt Ltd. He said , whenever A person speaks to Gayatri, energy flows out from her inside through her spirit, action, talking and body language and the other person also starts feeling energized. I am by a very energetic person full of enthusiasm and excitement for new things. but after reading this article I realized that may be , m not using and utilizing my energy to fullest. and thats all due to mismanagement of energy. This article is an eye opener for me as Even in the 3rd term of my MBA I feel that I am not managing and channellizing my energy in the right direction and at the right time . And after reading this article its now I realize that managing energy is as important in path of success as is managing time and other resources. coz at the end , everything boils down to energy. U can't do anything properly if u do not channelize ur energy properly.

The questions asked were quite interesting to answer after reading the article as all of us needed 2 do a lot of brain-storming on the concept of "KNOWING THYSELF"
The first question is where am I standing now , in terms of life . In terms of life I am in my platform building or you can say learning stage . learning about the world in which I 'll working for the rest of my life . Right now , I am only preparing myself for the challenges which one faces when we enter the real corporate world . I am just planting the seedling and nourishing it with waters of knowledge, faculty and networking . And the roots need to be strong as this is 1 who's gonna bear me fruits in the longer run. So actually the time invested , resources used, energy involved in the processes and experiences lived are to be taken care of the most. I have a lot of responsibilties to be taken care of and M just trying to manage all as efficiently as possible. And moreover , I do try to link every concept taught in the class to the organization i had worked 4.

What do I wanna become :

Super-Short term goal : Making the best possible utilization of the resources and assets provided at KIAMS. Working towards developing a better personality in terms of communication, leadership skills, time and energy management and nourishing my enterprenial mindset. And , working consistenly without fault towards by bid for knowledge.

Short term goal : Working in a growing and learning organization 4 another 3-5 years wherein I can exercise my knowledge and practically apply the theories learnt in these two years.

Long term goal : Starting my own music company and exercising entrepreneurship skills based on my experience and learning from past work X

Few things which will be there in all stages of my life are : Learning, Polishing my self further , working for social/national betterment , networking, giving time to my family and friends and working towards my hobbies of singing, tuitoring and reading.

    Shortcomings in energy management :

I remember that in my first term as many ppl here know , I used to go 2 bed at 5 or even six O'clock in the morn, waking up late , I was so very much involved in many silly things.I used to feel surprised and disappointed at times of what all I was doing as time was passing like sand from hand.

This is what I actually wrote in my personal blog the day I told my results of 1st term to my family :

"What exactly am I here for , and what acually am i doing !

Am I here for movies, chatting and wasting time here and there chatting, , or M I here for chatting on gtalk for continous 5-6 hours, or sleeping late at night at around 5-6 and then unable to get up , go 15 mins late , just skip the class or yawning inside the class.

Or am I here for not going prepared for any class, any presentataion , any tests , not even end terms. Just sleping for 5-6 hrs a day and then 3-4 hrs in the night ,Flunking ur brkfast daily and then rushing for those stupid things on gtalk..

Hey, I suppose I know everything . Nothing is unknown to me ,and I m no more an immatued kid who doesn't know what all am I doing with my life."

When I flunked badly in my first term. I had a word with parents, teachers and friends then tried to overcome my weaknesses 1 by 1 . I reduced my chatting on gtalk to 60% in a month, and actually used this skill of mine to interact with ppl of top bschools, tried to come 4 bkfast, ne'er missing sports , working honestly for assignments, waking up b4 8.30 , started reading newpapers.

But the things which M gud at are : having a balanced and nutritious diet, meditating daily, giving time to myself, being active and attentive in classes, planning my days, supporting my family, being resilient in tough times, having a positive attitude , keeping my spirit high, keep smiling & making ppl smile.

How can I overcome those based on learnings from this article:

i just loved the saying in the article:

"People can cultivate positive energy by learning to change the

stories they tell themselves about the events in their lives.

We teach them to tell the most hopeful stories possible. "

But still I do have miles to go in terms of managing energy and time both. If belive that if its gonna b , its upto me . I am the only 1 who can make out the bst in myself b and how by managing my energy properly. By being regular and punctual at meals, sports, studies and extra currics. With this I'll actually be able to manage many things . I'll be able to focus on various things simuntaneously .How, by exercising daily sleeping b4 1 , starting yoga, having small meals at short intervals, increasing meditation time, talking to faculties, being in library for 3-4 hrs , reading quality stuff, following my plans, and striving hard for my bid to gain knowledge. I NEED TO WORK MORE ON THE BODY AND MENTAL ASPECTS rather than spirit and emotions and m an eternal optimistic .and a very strong person internally. The learning for me starts from today only rather now only as my opening statement in the article are the egs of blunders I need to manage !so rather do the things that u r interested in the most but at the right time by optimally managing my energy!

I would like to end my blog with something thats very true of me :
One of the major factors that propell my boat to betterment is my attitude to make learning , a part of my life . I learn every day, every hr and if possible every momet. I learn from everybody .....be it a 2 year old kid,, my competitor in class or at work, family, friends , teachers , parents , my roomies, ppl i admire , ants, strangers who r my inspirstions , irrespective of the occupation , age, fame, economic and social status , ... anywhere be it home , school, college ,ncc, workplace, wherever i go , the urge to learn more and get better with each passing day , keeps me going ! I learn from children , flowers, nature, history, movies , experiences of others ,biographies/autob of legends , my own remarkable past.... If anyone , anywhere , anytime .....I find someone worth learning from I pull my socks and dedicate myself and learn. I am passionate to learn new things in life ....... to learn from my own mistakes and from those committed by others.
and interestingly, now a dayz i am being familiarized with an innovative concept of learning from animals and i suppose there r tons of learnings.
    3 Cheers ! :)

  125. hi,,,,,,,,, This is Sonal Saurav from KIAMS Batch-11
Really this is very helpful article “manage your ENERGY ,not your time”.but implementation of it depends solely on individual, how much time he/she will take for execution of it in his/her life. I am giving here an example how will I execute it in my life. If any assignment is given to me, firstly I think about how much time was assigned for finishing it. Then I give first preference to time not to efficiency. In result I always submit my assignment in the last moment or sometimes after the deadline. If I had done it efficiently then this would never have happened with me that I would submitted it after the deadline. Someone said “life is too short to get all knowledge” but if we energise ourselves and try to do efficiently then it is possible. From now I will start doing my task efficientely from the beginning without considering about the deadline and I am sure that it will be completed before the deadline and I will not be tensed in the last moment.
Now I am going to post the answers of all question that is asked.
1.Where I am now (in terms of life)
I am in the middle of a river , here river is a source that converts students into working class. It can be any thing doing MBA,CA,CS,other professional course and getting knowledge that helps us to be working class. some times the flow of river gives me positive response and sometimes negative. I’m trying to reach another bank of river where my working class seniors are waiting for me and left another side of river that was completely student life. There are many methods to reach another side of river through bridge, ship and swimming. I have choosen the last one because through it I myself will decide the edge where I have to go, it will not be decided by something else that leads me.

    2. what I want to become
I want to become an entrepreneur , I have lots of ideas but I don’t know how much it will be feasible at the time of execution.
3.what are my shortcomings in energy management
Earlier I used to do meditation daily after coming here I did for 15 days then after I left it doing ,in the result my concentration power has become less, I take some time to concentrate on anything.
I am very emotional person, but some of the people can identify it many times its obstructed me to achieve my goal.I have spent lots of time for managing my emotion, in last I became success but till that time I had already wasted my valuable time.
    4. I think , managing turbulence of mind and controlling emotion are very difficult work. I will overcome these through meditation and try to do one thing at one time.

  127. Hi I am Vivek Jacob from KIAMS
First of all thanks to Prof. Nagendra for sending such a good article. This article made me to introspect a lot about me, about the way of my life, my thinking...
    1) Now my phase of my life is really confusing. I have a lot of different paths ahead and I am really confused which path should I select. The real thing that confuses me is to go spiritually or in a materialistic way. I am feeling this world is truly materialistic and its really contradicting to my way of thinking or the way my soul have to be. Really I don’t know which path I should select. This always confuses me.
    2) I want to become an innovator in the sense a creator of any new ideology or ideas or any new things where the whole world follows that. Still I don’t know which field or which area. All through my life destiny had a great influence on my life( that I feels) still I believes in that. It doesn’t mean that I won’t work or do anything or wait for the destiny. But I believes that destiny have an influence on the thought process in my mind.
    3) After reading this my management of energy is very bad. Usually I feels my concentration level at night is good more than day times. So usually I sleep at very late. Since I have classes in the morning I feel sleepy and could not concentrate at class, wasting all those morning hours. The problem is that I can see that I work well in alternate days. Many of the times after coming after to KIAMS I feel emotionally low. I think thinking too much about the future and past rather than thinking of the present. I think lack of sleep also made my mood to fluctuate a lot. My close friend also has the same routine and we worked according to that. My concentration level is also bad since I can’t concentrate I thing at a time. My mind goes on revolving all the time.
    4) Before reading this article itself I have made a plan that instead of wasting lots of productive hours in the day time it should be better to sleep at least 6, 7 hours a day and I tried practising it for the last few days I think it increases my productivity. Last few days I was not much being in to academics but I could concentrate well in class. Usually I take break after every 40-45 minutes and after taking the break when I sit I could feel the change that some new ideas originates or I could solve thing which I was doing at that time. The important thing I have to improve is to be free from all the emotions in the sense a same feeling when I am happy as well as I am sad. But I don’t know solution for this emotionless emotion!

The best way to manage energy is to have good thought out plan...well chalked out schedule...high level of focus and determination...
yes energy has to be managed, distributed, seggregated or whatever... but the planning part is what is going to be most important in the whole process of energy management apart from the little tricks of trade here and there...

    1) Its the time of my life when i am going to build my career, my charcter, attitude and hone my skills... work on my weaknesses and find areas where i can implement my strengths.
this is time where i will plan my future, enjoy my present and use my past learning

    2) A person who is respected for his deeds and who has achieved what every person aspirs to achieve. someone who is highly motivated,, full of energy.

    3) Need to sleep a lot... have developed a stoppage and resistance towards coming out of the comfort zone or the cocoon that have been sitting pretty in...

4)will try to be more focused and be more process oriented.. see to it that the adrenalin keeps getting pumped up as and when i am low
be more choosy about doing things
and have lot of energy to manage myself

  129. 1.i sudhanshu sinha describing the phase where i am standing i know these are the most precious days of my life and the things which i have today i know that it will also not remains with me in my future the energy of youngness, the big dreams, the high expectations, the jeal of breaking the world showing the world that what i am i know these things will not remains with me in my future.as far as my position in my life according to my expectation i am graded my self 3 out of 10 because lot of things which i want to do but i am not doing, all time i warn myself that i am not doing that which i want from myself .
2.as far as life goal is conserned i wanna become a succesful enterprenuer.
3.as far as the energy mgt. is conserned definatly i am also not satisfied with myself but in some places i do well like whenever i am felling tired i use music i like music and i know by the help of it i can reenergize myself and i use this and after it i regain my energy but in some places like whenever i depriciate with myself at that time i loose my energy at a very high extent.i feel that i also loose my energy through overexpecting from myself what happen generally i think that i will do this work today and due to my carelessness i didn't do that day and another day i repent on myself that gives me depresation and i loose my energy.
4.i can overcome from it through energy mgt. if i manage my life according to a systematic manner then definatly i can overcome through this problem.

  130. Hi, I am Juby Joseph, pursing by EPGDM at TAPMI, Batch 15.

I must admit that though i have been constantly working on managing my time but this is the first time i have come across the concept of managing your energy. So thank you Prof. Nagendra for sourcing us this article that definitely pushed me into reading this inspiring article. The article has definitely thrown some light on a few key aspects which if adopted could bring about some positive changes in our life. Ofcourse the first question that would come up is whether we are brave enough to make some changes and if yes, can we follow it through.....

As a Operation Head i can completely relate to the issues portrayed in the article and by the virtue of being responsible for the HR, Finance and General Administration functions in my company i can definitely vouch for the fact that multitasking, catching up with time and settling for best out of the worst is the order of the day. Subordinates and team members constantly hounding you for directions and assistance, superiors requesting information and reports as of yesterday, unpredictable issues/situations which at times I believe can only arise in our country and the list can go on.

Ideally i would love to follow some of the aspects mentioned in the article but I do have my doubts on whether practically it can work. I guess it can work if you have like minded people around you who share the same thoughts and aspirations however in my experience the particle side of managing people is it is difficult if not impossible to change or influence people until they personally accept and realize the need for change.

    Now focusing on the questions:

1.where are you in terms of life

Well i believe i am still exploring to find my horizon where i can harness my potential.

2.what do you want to become in your life:
A Management consultant or a facilitator of service oriented creative business functions/processes to enable people to connect and relate with one another.

    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management:
Lack of focus and consistency. Control over emotions.

    4. how will you overcome these from what you learnt from the article:
I believe one of the factors leading to lack of focus and consistency maybe because i feel i can do more but not achieved it yet. I set of as an entrepreneur straight out of college and toiled for 4 years before i settled for a more peaceful life.

However the passion and drive are still in tack and raving to set off again but do not want to fail this time thus the article has reassured me on some of my belief and helped me reflect on my shortfalls. Practically implementing some of the suggestions will be a good starting point to assess my commitment for the future.

  131. hii
    this is deepak from kirloskar..
actually i dont want 2 waste my energy as well as time. so, coming 2 the point i define my life.. write i am at second step of my life. my first step was to take admission in one of the good b'school so that i can improve my skills and knowledge which i completed successfully and now this second step of completing my MBA successfully is going on... and i my life would be successful when i complete the ladder of seven steps. on the seventh step i would hav my own company, i would be a rich person. i would hav a happy family, everything which is required 2 live happily... now how i would go abt it... after completing my second step.. i would like 2 join a company for two years that would be my third step...in that i will learn practical knowledge abt corporate world... side by side i am doing my own share trading n investment business so i would like to expand this further... so this is a good source of increasing my capital... what i am expecting is that i would need around 50 lakhs in my hand to start ne business.. write now i just hav 2 lakh around.. so my fourth step is to jump a company for a good profile n package... then after getting good experience and having a required capita i wud go 4 my 5th step of starting business.... sixth step is to convert my business into public ltd further after some years. and the seventh step is successful life which i hav already told.... so this is my journey of life.
now abt energy management here in KIAMS.. frankly speaking i take a quality sleep of 6 hours in night and then rest of 18 hours i wud like to spend more on finding new n new ideas to improve my skills.. i don't b attentive in most of the classes rather i utilise my time in doing finance research in some classes like B. Ethics, DMM, POM.... so keeping myself busy is my motto... so the only shortcoming i found was my lackness of attentive in classes and speaking alot abt useless issues...
so, after reading this article i cant say that immidiatly i will implement this is in my routine.. rather i would like to acclamatise myself gradually with environmnt to get knowledge more and wastage less.... as i told i speaks alot so i think 20% of my energy wastes in speaking.. so first i would like to reduce it to 18 n then 16 and then gradually i wud reduce it to 10%... so that this saved energy i can utilise in other useful issues... as abt gathering energy i m up to the mark.. i usully go for breakfast and never miss food as other person do so... so my main concern is to save energy and utilise it in my routine...

  132. Hiiiii to all this is Amit Kumar Gupta another guy from KIAMS.... May be I am more or less the same as the others as there are many POPs (Points of Parities) between me and other students from KIAMS but there are many PODs (Points of Differentiations) too. Don’t worry I am not going the list them out for you but you will certainly come to know about them as you go through. I think I must not get more into the Marketing terminologies as I am not good at it. By the way after the Term II results I think I am not good at any of the fields. Now, after repeated failures (both in Term I and Term II) when I introspected I found there are many areas on which I have to improve.
At present I am at a very critical position of my life. This juncture of my life is either the make or break for my career and my life. There has been many ups and downs in my life as well as in my career, it has been just like a roller-coaster. Actually, this was all the result of not planning my career. It all started with preparing for NDA but not able to give the exam due to some reasons, then thinking of doing Engineering but landed up doing B.Sc. The hopes of getting into the armed forces were still in my mind which inspired me to prepare for CDS and also undergo NCC training along with my graduation, which could have become the helping factor of my getting into the armed forces. During this time I was determined, self-motivated and worked very hard to achieve my goals, on the way I had many achievements in NCC, where I made many successful efforts in National camps and successfully topped and secured ‘Aye’ (A) grade in ‘C’ certificate of NCC. After that I cleared my CDS exams and also had direct SSB calls based on my NCC’s training, but there was a twist in my career as my parents said they were not ready to send me to Armed Forces as I am the only son and there it is a risk of life. So, I left my desires for them and started preparing for MBA entrance along with my job in a Bangalore based Hospitality firm as a Guest Relations Executive. And finally at present I am here at Kirloskar doing MBA. I am happy with whatever I am doing and trying to get the best out of me which have not yet been shown to you all. I am not still sure to what I want to achieve from my life but I want to become a successful person, I know it is very general and it has different meaning to different people. I just want to have a self satisfaction to whatever I do, serve my family and serve my society and nation in all possible ways in which I can.
I am not fond of reading but as I started reading this article, I could not leave before finishing that. I found it very interesting as I also generally look for energy conservation in the best possible way as I can. I wake up early in the morning, work out at Gym, have breakfast, do running and swimming in the evening but still after reading this article I found there are many more things which I could do to conserve and manage my energy in better ways. The things which I don’t do include not having proper sleep and not taking proper breaks between works. But now I think that I will be able to overcome my shortcomings as the Campus is closing at 11, so I could complete all my important works before that, take proper rest and also try to take proper rest between works.

  133. I am Rahul from Tapmi.I work for a software company called Systems Advisers Group as a project leader for the Quality Assurance team.

The article was a kind of eye opener focusing more on energy levels rather than the time. I am really charged up after reading this article but I am not sure how I can sustain the same energy levels in the long run. Everytime when I read an article or a motivational book am always charged up but not able to maintain the same attitude or energy levels in the long run.

    Answers to the questions

Where am I right now? I am somewhere in the middle of my life, walking on a path, which is flooded with uncertainties. There is a long way to go and lot of things to achieve.

    What I want to become?

(Career perspective) From a short-term perspective I am looking at a position, which is two levels ahead of me and have to be achieved with in the next 2 years.
From a long-term perspective I wanted to set up something of my own, which I wanted to achieve with in the next 7 years.
(Life perspective) I wanted to become a very good human being who is socially responsible and help people in all the possible ways.

What are your shortcomings in energy management?
I have become so lazy to work out which has considerably reduced my stamina. How I wish I could start my old habits of swimming and playing table tennis. Another shortcoming is to concentrate on something for a long time. I get distracted so easily.

    How will you overcome?
I need to chalk out an exercise plan, which can keep me healthy. In order to improve my concentration I need to start meditating everyday for an hour.

  136. Hi All,

Myself is Milind Ambani from TAPMI.I’m working with Oracle.
As many articles floating around this is also one of the encouraging articles. The difference here is, they have given some of the examples that are faced by most of us in our daily life. Encouraging point in this article is, if people at VP level can follow some of the rituals (may be as simple as responding to mail only at a stipulated time or switching off from work when with family) then we too can do it.

Though I don’t agree with a point that says devote time and energy to what’s most important for you. I mean I’m really not sure if its possible, atleast in professional life. I’m not sure how many of you agree but we really don’t enjoy in everything we do at work but most of the time we don’t have choice but to do it.

1.)In terms of life, right now I’m at a stage where I’m struggling to prioritize things between work, family and studies, as all three are equally important. I’m happy that till now I’ve been able to maintain balance to a certain extent baring few exceptions. I guess now more concetrationg will go towards work as we are in recession :)
Baseline is whatever I do,I want to be a responsible citizen of this great country.

I always love to work on something to make this country a better place. In fact, recently one initiative i took is encouraging people to register themselves for voting so that they can vote in the forthcoming elections.I'm co-ordinating this activity with Jaago Re!.

2.)I’ve few thoughts in mind with regards to what I want to become and needless to say one of them is entrepreneur but I’m really not sure if I’ve risk taking ability at this stage in my life when my major prority is my family. This is not just in terms of finance but in terms of time as well. I always love to spend maximum time with my family.Starting something on your own is very demanding in terms of time as well.
3.)Shortcomings in energy management: Many!! I will jot down some of them, especially on which I’ve alredy started working.
I really don’t spend time in working out or atleast walking for sometime.
I’m bit regular (thanks to my wife) w.r.t my food habits.
Till now I’m able to manage about seven hours of sleep.Though few days ago,I’ve started an experiment to see if I can manage with six hours -),frankly finding it difficult but will keep on updating you guys.

Email really easily distracts me and I’ve already started working on this.
Loosing focus….I would say,my job is such that I need to be concentrating on immediate crisis, though I should start working on something which is helpful to my organization and myself on a long term basis.

4.)I’ve already started working on few of them, as I don’t want to start working on overcoming all shortcomings at one time, as the end result might be zero in that case ;)
Started a walk for about half an hour in the morning along with my wife -). It serves multiple purpose, walking and spending dedicated time with my wife !!

On the Mind front, I’ve stopped looking at my emails every now & then. When I’m doing some work that needs continuous concentration, I just close my mail client. Also, till now, I tend to respond to any and every mail immediately. I’ve started prioritizing that as well.

I also try to switch my self off (from work, studies thoughts) on the way to home so that I can spend quality time with my family.

I’m commited to overcome other shortcomings but only after above rituals become ingredient of my routine.

Last it was really encouraging to see thought provoking disussions, hope those were not for grades ;). Guys, pleae keep in mind that first lesson to be successuly is to be honest with yourself.

I would love to see disussion about challenges being faced while following rituals and how did one overcome those challenges. So guys, keep writing as you never know that it might be graded as well :-)

    Cheers,
    Milind

  137. Hi All,

I am Nischal Patel, I have completed masters in finance and currently pursuing EPGDBM in TAPMI, I am also working in a company called Thomson Reuters (we are basically provide financial content for the investors community to invest).
Personally I am in a learning phase, I am learning about lot of different things at the same time (some thing which I enjoy doing), however some where down the line I feel my learning is getting limited to the kind of work I do. I am interested in learning more creative thing, but work and studies I am just getting bogged down (Kirloskars friends trust me college is far better than office)
    2) In simple words I want to become a good human being, with knowledge, intensions and capability to experience every situation as efficiently as possible.
    3) Well I feel I am quite energetic because I practice Yoga every second day, (Trust me friends doing Yoga has given me significant amount of energy and patience which has helped me work more and better). In terms of shortcoming, I feel some times I am short-sighted, and waste my energy on unwanted priorities, to manage this I try to spend some time thinking and planning before I apply my efforts, but still I feel somewhere I am going wrong.(Probably because I am just going with the situation and don’t know where I want to be :P).

    4) First of all I would like to thank our Prof for providing such a nice article,
I am not the kind of person who works hard; I am not the kind of person, who would want to work over 8 hours at work, still I want to do all the things I want to do. What I want to infer from my above statement is a human being can’t do every thing, he can only do things which he or she wants to do or needs to do. So the first thing I learnt is learn to say NO, you can only do those things which you can do so learn to say no to the kind of things which you cant do. Spend time planning your schedule; always plan your schedule and objectives every day before you start work, which obviously directs your energy in the rite direction.

    Thanks,
    Nischal

  138. Hello,

I am Vijay Kumar C from TAPMI. I work in IOCL.

Managing energy rather than time is a fresh perspective. We have been long fed on time management.

The opening case is a typical scenario for many executives. In the ever increasing competitive atmosphere, the executives and managers are on the run always, scarcely allowing themselves time to do what they enjoy. This has resulted diseases like heart trouble increasingly hitting younger profile people.

“Manage your energy ……” is an interesting article in that it offers a tool kit to overcome the problems and achieve a work- life balance. The article gives a diagnosis questionnaire, which when answered gave me the picture of my current energy management and also the direction to take. The article gives well known solutions such as “sleep on time” “sleep at least 7-8 hours” “exercise regularly”, but puts it across effectively. The article also suggests that I switch of mobile when I reach home. Such “radical” measures require company support as given in the article. At present, however, my boss would not be happy with switching off of mobile and my distributors would complain as our plant dispatches till 2200 hours.

The popular belief of energy coming from body and mind has been expanded by the author to include the emotions and spirit. Also throws up that the thought that energy is not only renewed but also can be expanded.

The author states that the organisations should shift from “what I can get out of the employees” to investing more in them so that they bring “more of themselves” to work. The organisations need to motivate their employees to do work with engagement from all four dimensions- body, mind, spirit and emotions.

One method I have already adopted is taking a break after about 120 minutes of continuous engagement. I am happy to know that giving appreciation is one of the methods- I have been all along practicing it. Viewing an event through the “three lenses” seems to be a great method- I was wondering if I would be able to do it when “in” the event. Could my consciousness hover above during an event and try on the three lenses? Then I would be able to achieve a sense of detachment and would be able to always analyse and react objectively. Imagine! No interpersonal conflict! No wounding of the self or opposite person’s psyche!

Another point I have partially adopted is in the “interruptions by technology”. I have long back disabled my lotus mail online notifier which gives a pop up when a new mail arrives. I check my mails and respond about once in 90 minutes. Also I keep mobile in silent mode during meetings and call up the missed numbers after meetings.

Managers living at furious pace loose out on what they really stand for and get dictated my external circumstances- see how the PwC staffers got into the mess (assuming they were pressured by system into doing it; otherwise it is difficult to see well educated individuals with high market value getting into such morass; they may have simply lost out their identity in the rat race). The organisations and employees look how to get most out the other and in the least possible time and end in a lose-lose situation. “Manage your energy …………” gives solutions, which if followed will result in win-win situations for both.

  139. Greetings everyone :-)
I am Jennifer Rodrigues, pursuing EPGDM at TAPMI. I am working with Accenture, with a team which provides risk management solutions to some of the biggest investment banks in the world.
The article "Manage Your Energy and Not Time" has forced me to introspect on how much I am engaged in the professional life and loosing out on time that I had planned to spend with my family and friends. My first presentation in TAPMI was on the Time Management where I spoke on how to plan and prioritize your tasks and allocate time to it. This article has certainly opened up a new spectrum of ideas wherein you manage your energy and the time is taken care of.
I agree to a lot of ideas in the article like the "buying time" and "Words of Appreciation" and at the same time disagree with many like "focus on doing what you like”. Not always will you get to do what you like. Most of us work on a job where we do not like everything we do. Some where down the line we have to make a strong choice as to how much time will I allocate to do the things which I like.
I will certainly take the perspective of combined energy of the Mind, Body, Emotions and Spirit and I hope this motivates me to take up my Yogasana lessons which some how vanished from my day – to – day to do task list.

    Now to the questions:
1: Where are you in terms of life?
I believe that I am in a phase where I have the ability to shape my future life. Each day of my life is a journey towards a fruitful future.

    2. What do you want to become in your life:
My goal since I started working and till this date has been to be a business consultant. As of now I haven’t thought about being an Entrepreneur, but that idea appeals me.

    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management?
I see a lot of deficits in my energy management
    - A very enthusiastic start, but that dies down like a plan amidst thorns. There is a very nice saying “A well started work is half done”. I have a good start but that focus dies down very soon.
    - Lack of motivation to start things afresh which I have left behind like my workout and pranayama.
    - A very strong energy crisis.

    4. How will you overcome these from what you learnt from the article?
List of things which I have identified, which I am gonna follow religiously
    - A very strong focus. Using which I will be able to accomplish the tasks which I enthusiastically started.
    - Will work out at least 5 times a week.
    - Take regular breaks from work and unwind with my family so that I return back to the drudges of work energized.

Thanks to Prof. Nagendra and everyone for discovering the spectrum of perspectives of the article.

  140. Hi Everyone

I am Srinidhi from TAPMI Batch 15. I work for McAfee.

At first I would like to thank Prof.Nagendra for sharing such a wonderful article, this made me feel like a reflection of what I am undergoing as a Management Professional.

I have had close to 13 years of work experience. Earlier in my career, I used to find enough time for all the activities that I used to enjoy (Yoga, Meditation, Practicing Music, Playing with my Pet & spending enough time with my family and socializing) as and when I grew in the Managerial cadre, things started falling apart. Added to this was marriage, kid and MBA. I would like to revisit / restructure my thought process and add more simplistic rituals which are mentioned in the article and be more effective as a Professional.

    Now coming to Prof.Nagendra's Questions:

    1. tell me where you are now (in terms of life)

I am presently in a hectic phase where I am trying to balance my Professional job, Studies and Personal life without compromizing on any of it.

    2. tell what you want to become

I want to be a successful Businessman without diluting any of the roles that I play in personal & Professional life.

    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management.
    -Less of physical activity
-More of forethough / future thinking
    -Irregular eating habits
    -Multi-tasking

4.how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article

    -Start Planning things right.
    -Practice rhythimic breathing & meditation.
    -Develop a strict sleep cycle.
-Be more aware of myself and control my emotions
    -Take regular break's from Work
    -Follow healthy diet
-Let go all the negative thoughts and fill it with Positivity
-Avoid Multitasking & do tasks in sequence, one at a time.
    -Stretch exercises between work

  141. This is Lalith from TAPMI, Batch15. I work for MindTree Ltd.,

In my view, all the pointers given the article are not new. In fact one of the books we read 'The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari' reveals all these principles and are a superset of what was said in this article. I am certain that all of us know these but most of us fail to implement these (though very few implement a mini version of the same). But this article reminds us again on the golden principles of having a good, healthy and happy life. I personally feel frustrated (on myself) for not acting on these time and again. Anyway, I gathered momentum after reading this article and hope to sustain this in future.

    Coming to the self assessment:

    1. Where you are now (in terms of life):
I am really confused, I sometimes feel satisfied and sometimes dissatisfied, both with my Profession as well as life. In the essence, I don't know if I am in the right place or doing the right things.
I work hard and make my team work hard (sometimes it is bad). I spend lots of time in office (12+ hrs minimum). Thanks to my wife, she takes care of my food and follows up regularly which otherwise I don't take care. I am not organized in terms of finances, relationships when it comes to personal life. Only time I feel happy and energetic (when out of office) is while playing/chatting with my 6yr old kid. I always feel energetic while at office but the moment I come out of office, I feel very tired and lazy (strange).

    2. What do you want to become in your life:
As I said earlier, I am not sure if I am at the right place and doing the right things. Sometimes, I think of becoming an entrepreneur and sometimes think of high position in an organization and some other times to be a philanthropist/social activist. I have not firmly set my mind decision in this regard. I joined MBA with the hope that it will help me organize and take right decisions wherever I am.

    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management?
There is big gap here. I don't do any of the activities suggested in the article, neither physical nor spiritual. Especially, lack of physical exercise and long hours in office is taking a toll on my health as well as mind. I tried once doing Yoga but discontinued after a couple of months. Strangely, I feel tired when I am out of office.

    4. How will you overcome these from what you learnt from the article?
I am excited once more (this is n th time :-)) after reading this article. I think, this is the high time for me to follow at least some of the advices given. I decided to go for Gym or Yoga (I started getting up early now-a-days), take regular breaks at work, once in the morning and again in the afternoon. I am not sure if I can avoid multitasking as it is considered as one of my strength and is required on my job. I have to find time (rather energy) to spend quality time with family.

  142. Hi, this is Iman Mohanty from TAPMI (Batch 15). I have been working for Thomsonreuters since the past 3 years.
Clearly the delay in my response shows I really was in need of an article like this! This article has triggered me to address some of my biggest problems like procrastination and prioritization. I have always been aware my bad habit of procrastination but I always used to conveniently blame it on the lack of time! One thing that I have learnt and will surely try to implement now on is start working out which I have been putting off since a very long time. I also really found the concept of telling the right story and I would try to practice this in my life.
I am not too satisfied with where I am heading in terms of my career at the moment. As there are too many changes happening at my work place and it is hard to cope. I am pretty lost and confused about where I am going to be in future. I have a vague idea about what I to be in terms of professional life but still trying to figure out how to achieve it. Though I am happy with what I have achieved in life so far, I need to get my focus back and not get perturbed by the external elements to move ahead. On personal front I am where I have always wanted to be and more or less satisfied with where I am heading.

My biggest shortcoming in energy management would be procrastination. I had once read that the best way to tackle procrastination is to push yourself to do the work right then every time there is an urge to postpone it and I will start working on this. I also need to have a better control over my mind in order to have a better physical discipline. I am still working on having right eating habits and stop indulging on junk food! Being a foodie surely doesn’t help!

I will develop a regular exercise routine and focus on strengthening my physical energy. To achieve this I will develop the habit of starting my day early. I will also try and eat right and avoid eating junk and spoiling my health. I will cultivate positive thoughts so I am less affected by the external pressures. I will get back to light reading for relaxation, something I have stopped completely after getting into TAPMI. Finally, I will get my focus back to work in order to achieve my goals.

  143. Hello, I am Aravind (@ Tapmi, Batch 15) working with Intel Corporation as an Operations Manager. I'd like to share my thoughts on this well addressed article "Manage your energy, not your time"

Wow!! An article which truly broke the stereotyped answer "I have no time to do..."

"Manage your energy, not your time" is indeed an eye opener for me. An article which each individual can relate to as he/ she generally slips off a well maintained routine/regime and gets trapped into the busy worldly affairs thereby ignoring the quintessential elements like social life, family, health, fitness and so on...

I should admit that I fall in the category of "A full fledged energy management crisis" after answering the short questionnaire in the article...man I really need help :) :)

Jumping to the questions....here are some of my ambitions, roadblocks, etc...

    1. Where are you are now (in terms of life)
    - At this juncture of life I am a li'l caught up with managing both professional and personal life and tryin' hard to do a good job at both the ends. Apart from this I am in the process of setting up a foundation for my future and busy exploring options that I think fascinates me.
This world has soooo many opportunities in the offering that I'm baffled to death on zeroing on one of the options- truly confused and drained out of energy...

    2. What you want to become
I have been dreaming of being an entrepreneur from college days but like most other kids landed up taking up the conventional path i.e. Engg. followed by a job at an MNC. Truly speaking I feel that time has come where I need to take a bold step and get started with setting up an enterprise of my own. I am banking on my MBA learnings and insights to get there…

My interests lie in a variety of fields like Food & Beverage, Education, Consulting, Social responsibility and the list goes on…I want to pick up the most lucrative of the lot and make a lasting impression in that domain [be among the biggies in the industry] , and ofcourse diversify into the other areas once the flagship biz establishes.

Apart from the above I want to spend quality time with friends and family to build a lasting relationship..

    3. My shortcomings in energy management

I think a lot and most of the times I’m pre occupied which makes me feel heavy inside and makes me to miss out on critical and important tasks (like I missed to send this earlier J )

Also, I think too much into the future instead of cherishing the present moment…something which I need to get grip of..

    4. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this

A beautiful excerpt in the article which says… “When people are able to take more control of their emotions, they can improve the quality of their energy, regardless of the external pressures they are facing”

This will be something I’ll be working towards…i.e. do everything that will infuse positive energy in me- like follow a fitness regime, meditation, outings/ breaks, etc..

Another excerpt which drew my attention and which I’ll pursue from this very minute…” Finally, people can cultivate positive emotions by learning to change the stories they tell themselves about the events in their lives”

  144. Hi I am Srikrishna working with NDS pay TV technology Pvt Ltd as a senior software engineer. I work for games team. Work in this team is quite challenging, creative and interesting.
There was always a belief that if you can manage your time well we can achieve many things. I myself with many others in class have given presentations on “Time management” in Business communication skill class when asked for a presentation on any topic related to management. But what ever, we have only 24hrs a day. If we manage time we can only make a time table to do tasks in order but if we mange our energy we can achieve or do many things in the available time what we have. I mean that there is always a way to improve our energies but we always have fixed time
    Coming to the questions
1.) I am working in software industry from past three years. I think I am at starting or covered only 10% of distance to my goal. But my walk to reach the goal has started.
2.) I always wanted to have my own business. I also wanted to visit all places around the globe. By managing energy and time I have to start running towards my goal and dreams since I have reached only 10% of it.
3.) Shortcomings are I am not able to have enough time with friends and family and nature. I am very bad in maintaining physical agility as I don’t exercise at all. I have another shortcoming of making instant decisions with out thinking.
4.) Firstly after reading this article I feel we have to sleep early and wake up early. Do some exercise to have good physical agility. And I have to seriously start spending more time in formulating how to reach my goal efficiently and faster. Finally very important thing is I will have to allocate more time for family and friends.

  145. On a general note the article is a good read, but nothing new and there is a lot of writing about this elsewhere. But my PoV here is that though we read a lot about such on quite regular basis and attend the yoga, meditation (TM, SahajMarg, Sudarshan Kriya, and the list can go on with a lot of Gurus) sessions every now and then announced in many organizations to help employees, there is lack of perseverance to continue those and put to practice routinely in our lives. It is quite common that a lot of Organizations are investing in concepts like “Healthy Mind in a Healthy Body” in various ways possible, but our tasks drive our daily routines and we succumb to them and hardly take control of them, and let them take control of us, breaking the promises we make to ourselves. Let me try and answer the questions you posed,

    1. tell me where you are now (in terms of life)
I am 35+, with two kids, Diabetic and still love to eat exotic food and on most of the points in the article’s Energy Crisis survey, I score 6 (Reasonably well off), On and off with my exercise/meditation promises that I keep making to myself. New promise: Bought a treadmill for 40k in this recession time promising myself I will burn calories! Will sure for next couple of months! And don’t know if this will continue!! I hope with the ongoing MBA, I understood the Opportunity Cost better and Hope to leverage on RoI at least!!!
    2. tell what you want to become
An Entrepreneur changing the HealthCare ecosystem.
    3. what are your shortcomings in energy management
    Perseverance I guess!!
    4. how you will overcome them that you learnt from this article on
Like I said one has to be Perseverant in the promises that he makes to himself and look at least towards the Opportunity Cost and RoIs.

    Best Regards
    Vishwa

  147. On the outset the article is a good read, nothing new though. I have come across a few of them in the past. Having said that, it certainly does not take the sheen away. The article is indeed a good one and what it does for me is to make me remember the promises that I have made to myself many times and broken many times. I have been in this situation many times over in a way very consistent in starting some thing in these lines and abandoning ‘em quickly. It is not that I do not realize its importance but not been able to manage time properly (did I say the wrong one here).

What I feel is that if I could complete what is in my plate faster I would be able to indulge in these activities. Indulge is the wrong word the correct one would be invest, but in the present context indulge is what it seems to be fitting to the tee.

Let me try to answer the questions now….

    1. Tell me where you are now (in terms of life):

Caught in the middle (of professional, personal and spiritual “beer and De Beers”), doing a balancing act.

    2. Tell What you want to become:
The short term goal is to climb the corporate ladder and in the long run to be an Entrepreneur.

    3. What are your shortcomings in energy management:
For me I would still like to call it as time management, need to get better in time management and be consistent in terms of investing time for activities regarding energy management.

    4. How you will overcome them that you learnt from this article on:

Like I have mentioned earlier I have to show consistency in terms of sticking to the
    exercise routine not breaking them.
    - Manage the topline (health, energy and time) bottom line will follow.

    Regards,
    Somit

  149. I am at a stage where many doors are open for me with better choices and I am mulling over which one I should choose to enter. Currently, I am enjoying my passion for work and life. Just loving it!

In future I see myself becoming an entrepreneur of a product or service design house and adding value to society.

Today, organizations are promising ‘work life balance’ and an environment to live healthily and wisely. An underlying reason for this could be to lure talent, but that’s not all. Organizations are now selfishly proactive to convert our energies into performance and performance into results. We need to probe this further to understand what it actually means to us, especially when expectations at work are sky high and personal commitments cannot be deferred.

We often end up breaking the so-called work life balance and are therefore left with too little options. Situations can lead an individual to a mental, physical and emotional breakdown. In such situations it is often assumed that the breakdown is temporary and probably because of personal dilemma. However, it is not so. It is the negative energy that is transferred from one person to another and which has the capability to do a mass damage and a significant loss of productivity. It leaves you depleted with energy and any decision-making capability or zeal to take initiatives.

I learnt from this article the importance of understanding physical, emotional and mental energies available with every human being. Regardless of the fact that time is important, it is even more important to retain a sense of wise utilization of energies on each task that we perform. It is imperative to direct one’s energy in a planned manner to avoid any wastage. And to renew one’s energy, yoga, meditation, etc. are some simple ways available at hand.

    Regards,

    Vinay Dixit
